Caring for the Community

On May 12, 2011, Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care celebrated National Nurses Week with a delicious buffet and reception at their Santa Barbara office.

National Nurses Week is devoted to highlighting the diverse ways in which our country’s 3.1 million registered nurses are working to improve health care in our communities. From bedside nursing in hospitals and long-term care facilities to the halls of research institutions, state legislatures, and Congress, the depth

and breadth of the nursing profession is meeting the expanding health care

needs of American society.

Compassion & Quality

“National Nurses Week is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the outstanding nurses practicing at VNHC,” said Lynda Tanner, President and CEO

of Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care.

“We are fortunate and grateful to have such an

amazing nursing team. Not only do they provide highly skilled, quality care

in a variety of settings, but work tirelessly to support and ensure the health and safety of our patient community.”

A Job Well Done

Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care is proud to recognize each of our 85 registered nurses and LVNs for the compassion and commitment they provide to community residents throughout Santa Barbara – seven days a week, 365 days a year. Thanks so much for all you do!

VNHC celebrates National Nurses Week

We are delighted to announce that our new, expanded Serenity House is about to accept its first patients! The dream for this new hospice inpatient facility began in 2004, when our Board of Directors voted to build a new house because of ongoing waiting lists. This new Serenity House has been a labor of love

for all concerned and we are particularly grateful to those who made contributions to the capital campaign for the House. Thank you for helping us realize the dream of more end-of-life beds for our community.

While the new Serenity House is the most visible example of our tradition of responding to new and emerging needs in our community, we continue to move forward in several program areas. Our Home Health department is rolling out a Disease Management model to help patients with chronic illnesses better manage their symptoms. Our Elly Nadel Music Therapy program continues to expand as we work with student volunteers and local musicians to bring therapeutic music to patients and their families. And, finally, we have expanded our Integrated Therapies to the Santa Ynez and Lompoc Valleys, to bring the gift of comfort and relaxation to our patients there.

Change is definitely in the air as we continue to work hard to better serve our patients, our families, and our community. Thank you for your generous support. It is this support that allows us to continue to grow together in meeting community needs.

As the only licensed hospice inpatient facility in Santa Barbara County, Serenity House serves patients and their families through an interdisciplinary team of doctors, registered nurses, medical social workers, spiritual counselors, physical therapists and perhaps most importantly – volunteers. Over the years, VNHC’s volunteers have had many wonderful experiences assisting at Serenity House and are very enthusiastic about the new facility. Below are just a few of their stories and comments about this very unique community resource.

“Neil was wise, kind, and a gentle story teller. He had been in WWII and shared many stories with me about his experiences in the war. We also talked about various states we traveled through; even crossing some of the same areas many years apart from one another. I’ve always enjoyed connecting with patients at Serenity House but seeing Neil every week added a bit of sunshine to my service at Serenity House. Neil had a “journey” ahead of him but his stories left images and impressions that still resonate smiles and fill me with gratitude for having been able to share some time with such a fine life.” – Lani Wollschlager

“Volunteering at Serenity House has given me many opportunities to be present with people who were in one or another of the final stages of life. My parents each died in hospitals far from where we, the grown children, lived. Afterwards the family gathered for very meaningful memorial services. This was their choice, and it worked reasonably well for us descendants. But the hospice movement seems to me to facilitate and favor visits from family and friends, and meaningful farewells, before patients pass. There is much good to be said for this approach. I always bring my classic guitar with me to my volunteer shift, just to have it hand in case some patient or family gathering wants to sing a golden oldie for old time’s sake, or some especially meaningful song. It happens. Sometimes it even leads to my being asked to sing at a memorial service afterwards.” – Tom Heck

“Transformative, humanizing, transcendent, restorative… big words evoked from such a small space,. Yet even these powerful words are insufficient to describe what befalls all those who cross its threshold. Everyone who enters the walls of Serenity House is irrevocably changed by the privilege of being there, be it the patients who arrive for loving end-of-life care, the families and friends who are welcomed, embraced and comforted, the staff who have chosen this work and feel blessed to be there, or the

volunteers who know the joy of serving there – every single person blooms under the palpable love and grace felt instantly upon entering its door.“ – Margarita Sanchez

“It was one of those days. I felt pulled in a million directions and rush hour traffic had gotten the best of any patience I had left. I still had one more stop before home – to see one of the patients at Serenity House. When I came into her room she looked at me quietly and said, “How does the sunset look?” I guess I brought my day in with me as I had no idea. I returned her gaze and told her I would be right back. I walked around outside until I could find a spot to still see the sunset and yes, wow, there it was. I couldn’t believe I had not noticed this amazing event. I went back in and described in detail the colors and how they played with the clouds. She closed her eyes, smiled and said thank you. It was I who was filled with gratitude. It is I who thanked HER. She was such a beautiful teacher for me. Each time I came to visit, I learned about courage, graciousness, compassion, and most importantly to be in the present moment.” – Lillian Kurosaka

“0ne of the most important lessons for me has been helping the patients and their families in the “letting go” process - gracefully, quietly and with acceptance and forgiveness.” – Ingrid Sarrat

Caregiving Tips for Boomers: Creating a well-balanced diet for your elderly parents

On April 12, VNHC honored its volunteers during National Volunteer Week at the gorgeous Montecito home of board members Nancy and Bill Kimsey. Set on a hill top with clear views overlooking the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other, it was a spectacular setting for a lovely reception to honor all of our dedicated hospice volunteers.

VNHC music therapist Stefana Dadas provided entertainment while volunteers and staff toured the picturesque grounds and shared stories while enjoying light appetizers and a selection of local wines. It was a chance for volunteers, who are most often out in the field, to relax and catch up with each other.

During a brief ceremony, guests celebrated the 5476 hours of volunteer service given in 2010 – valued at $127,536. Volunteers with 5 years, 10 years and more years of service were recognized and honored. Joe J o w e l l

was presented with a special gift for marking his 30th year of service to VNHC. Every volunteer received a small journal with the VNHC logo and an inscription reading, “Thank You for your Loving Service.”

Guests also offered a giant “thank you“ to Michelle Cervantez who was recently promoted to a full time position at Serenity House. Michelle will be working exclusively with Serenity House volunteers in her new position as Inpatient Administrative Coordinator. Bea Molina, recently hired as Associate Manager of Volunteer Services, was also introduced.

Stefana provided the perfect closing to this ceremony by singing an original song, “For All You Are,” that was dedicated to VNHC’s volunteers who remain an integral part of the work we do in the community.

Giving Back

VNHC celebrates its volunteers during National Volunteer Week

BreakfastSelect high fiber breads and cereals, colorful fruit, and

protein to fill them with energy for the day. Try yogurt with muesli and berries, a veggie-packed omelet, or old-

fashioned oatmeal with dried fruit, nuts, and honey.

Lunch Keep their bodies fueled for the afternoon with a variety

of whole-grain breads, lean protein and fiber. Try a veggie quesadilla on a whole-wheat tortilla, curry chicken salad melt on multi-grain toast, or a baby spinach salad with roasted peppers, sunflower seeds and blue cheese.

Dinner

End the day on a wholesome note with lean protein and vegetables. Try grilled salmon with spicy salsa and baby broccoli, whole-wheat pasta with asparagus and chicken or a homemade turkey pot pie. Avoid heavy, spicy foods at night and stay away from fried foods.

Snacks

It’s okay, even recommended, to snack. But make sure you’re choosing healthy, high-fiber snacks to tide them

over until their next meal. Try fresh fruit, organic protein bars, raw almonds or cashews, yogurt, cottage

cheese, veggies and hummus.

Avoid Skipping Meals Skipping meals causes our metabolism to slow down, which can lead to feeling sluggish, irritated and often promotes poor food selection choices later in the day.

QUOTES ON CARING

Page 6

As we face new challenges, Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care continues to serve the community through subsidized care and special programs.

On Friday, May 6th, a capacity crowd gathered at the Coral Casino to join Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care in honoring and remembering mothers. The event began, once again this year, with an incredible silent auction. Co-chaired by Jodi Fishman-Osti and Janice Caesar, the silent auction offered fabulous gifts for moms and dads alike.

The luncheon began at noon with MC Catherine Remak calling the crowd together and thanking the many generous sponsors who make the event possible. Michelle Martinich, VNHC Board Chair, joined Catherine in acknowledging several men who, at a reception in April, donated more than enough to cover the entire cost of the luncheon.

Thanks to their generosity, all of the proceeds from the day go to support VNHC’s charitable mission. Mother’s Day Luncheon co-chairs, Janet Lew and Pam Geremia were acknowledged for all of the work they and their committee did to make the entire event such a success.

There were some additions to the festivities this year which included a live auction. Auctioneer Paul Clay did an exceptional job getting bids for

2 fabulous items while reminding the crowd that all of the proceeds went to a great cause. Another addition this year was a $1,000 cash raffle that was won by Arlie Skov, who promptly donated the money back to VNHC.

As always, the best part of the event came when the speakers took the podium to remember and honor their mothers. Following a brief introduction by Judy Rawles who shared a story of her own personal experience with VNHC’s home health care, Chris Toomey told the inspirational story of his mother, Constance Toomey Smith, who was widowed at a young age with six children to raise. While many would have found the challenges she faced overwhelming, Conny lived a life filled with joy that continues to inspire her children today. Chris’ memory of this extraordinary woman brought a moment of silence from the crowd.

The atmosphere changed when Dick and Maryan Schall’s 4 children took the stage. David Schall shared some wonderful memories growing up with Maryan and then introduced his sisters – Caryn Schall, Janny Gothro and Dawn Saglio – who serenaded their mother with original lyrics to the delight of the crowd. Proving that the girls take after their mother, Maryan also sang to the crowd about her wonderful children and her marriage of almost 60 years to Dick.

The Mother’s Day Luncheon ended promptly at 1:30 pm and, in the end, raised nearly $150,000 for Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care. Thanks to all who supported the luncheon and we’ll see everyone next year on Friday, May 11, 2012!

MiSSion of ViSiting nURSE & HoSpiCE CARETo provide high quality, comprehensive home health, hospice andrelated services necessary to promote the health and well-being of all community residents, including those unable to pay.

While VNHC provides benefits to the community in a variety of ways, the most significant is in our provision of subsidized care. Since our founding in 1908, we have maintained a strong commitment to our charitable mission ensuring that no one is turned away because of an inability to pay. In 2010, we provided over $1.3 million in subsidized care through our home health, hospice and personal care programs.

Additionally, VNHC holds several community education programs that provide important information around topics like caregiving and advanced directives. These programs draw a large segment of the population each year and provide resources that help patients and families to cope with serious illnesses.

Serenity House will offer patients and their families comfort, dignity and peace

“We can now focus all of our efforts and attention on providing the best end-of-life care possible.”

Page 8

“The extra beds this facility provides will be critical in delivering additional hospice care in the Santa Barbara region and we’re very lucky to have such an incredible resource in our community,” State Senator

Tony Strickland said.

As the only licensed hospice inpatient care provider in Santa Barbara County, VNHC found its existing 6-bed facility could no longer adequately satisfy the demand for hospice care in the community. Between 2008 and 2009 alone, Serenity House saw a 71% increase in the number of patients served and often, a waiting list of 10 or more people awaiting care.

In order to meet the increasing demand for quality end-of-life care, VNHC embarked on an ambitious capital campaign to fund an expanded hospice facility. By the end of 2007, community members had donated over $8 million to fund the project and with additional support from a large bequest, the medical nonprofit was ready to move forward with plans to build a new Serenity House.

“Thanks to an outpouring of support from this unique community, we were able to raise enough money to cover the entire cost of design and construction for the new facility,” said Lynda Tanner, president and chief executive officer for VNHC.

“Their incredible generosity and commitment to VNHC’s charitable mission allowed us to build Serenity House with no construction loans or debt and we can now focus all of our efforts and attention on providing the best end-of-life care possible,” she said.

Frank Schipper Construction broke ground on the new

approximately 27,300 square foot facility in 2009 following a careful planning and design process led by PMSM Architects who oversaw every detail of the building and its surrounding campus.

Each private room is equipped with a bed, flat screen TV, comfortable upholstered chair, closet, refrigerator, spacious ADA approved (Americans with Disabilities Act) bathroom, and its own outdoor patio with sweeping views of Santa Barbara’s lush hillsides.

“Our goal was to create an inviting yet medically advanced built environment where patients and their families felt like they were in the comfort of their own homes,” said Kristin Story, principal architect at PMSM.

“From the therapeutic whirlpool spa and full commercial kitchen to a quiet meditation room and outdoor fireplace, every aspect of the design focused on providing elements of comfort, dignity and peace,” she said.

The new Serenity House has been named a Green Santa Barbara two star facility, demonstrating a commitment to the latest practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.

“Serenity House is so much more than just a fancy building with a pretty view,” said Michelle Martinich, board chair of VNHC.

“Our team of qualified doctors, nurses and support staff offer a continuum of care which addresses both the needs of the patient

and their families. With about 30 staff and dozens of trained volunteers, Serenity House offers a variety of medical and integrated approaches to providing comfort, dignity and peace at life’s end,” she said.

If you’d like to find out how you can help support Serenity House either through a donation or by becoming a hospice volunteer, please contact us at (805) 965-5555.

On May 31st Pat Snyder retired from Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care after a decade of service to the organization. Pat served as the first Executive Director of the VNHC Foundation and, since 2008, has continued to serve the organization as the Senior Gift Planning Director until her retirement.

Pat’s tenure saw annual contributions increase from $600,000 to over $2,000,000 and she oversaw tremendous growth in the planned giving program. Perhaps her greatest achievement came as the lead staff person on the capital campaign for the new Serenity House. Working with campaign co-chairs, Jane Habermann and Dr. Roger Dunham, Pat raised more than $7.5 million to support the construction of the new, expanded hospice inpatient facility. It was fitting that her friends and colleagues joined her there on May 31st to celebrate her many contributions to VNHC.

Please join us in thanking Pat for her incredible service to VNHC and wishing her all the best in her retirement!

Samaritan SocietyIn 2010, we received just over $1million from 10 different estates where individuals had remembered VNHC in their will or estate plan. These gifts, in combination with those of our other Samari-tan Society members, allow us to plan for the future and help us

maintain our services in perpetuity with a continued goal that no one is turned away because of an inability to pay. Listed below

are VNHC Samaritan Society Members
