TO ACHIEVE A WESTERN AUSTRALIAN CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION (WACE) 2016 AND BEYOND 2014/14453 2014 School Curriculum and Standards Authority

To achieve a WACE students must: Achieve category three in the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (ONLA) in Reading, Writing and Numeracy or Band 8 NAPLAN (R,W &N) Complete a minimum of four Year 12 ATAR courses including the external examination (i.e. be eligible for an ATAR) or complete a Certificate II or higher. Complete two Year 11 English units and a pair of Year 12 English units. Complete at least one pair of units from a Year 12 List A (arts/languages/social sciences) course and one pair of units from a Year 12 List B course (mathematics/sciences/technologies). Complete at least 20 units (or equivalent) including a minimum of 10 Year 12 units. Achieve a minimum of 14 C grades in Year 11 and Year 12 units (or equivalent) with at least 6 C grades in Year 12 units (or equivalent). All students (whether they have achieved the WACE or not) will receive a Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement a record of all courses and/or programs completed (WASSA)

What types of WACE courses are there? ATAR courses for students who are aiming to go to university and will need to sit an external exam which will get them an ATAR. General courses for students aiming to enter further training or the workforce straight from school. These will have an externally set tasks that may be scheduled during Exam week.

What other programs are there? There are also Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs(Certificate Courses) and Endorsed programs which contribute to WACE equivalence and address areas of learning not covered by courses. Certificate Courses are nationally accredited and consistent with the requirements of the Australian Qualifications Framework. Students can mix and match these options to provide the best platform to meet the requirements to achieve a WACE.

Certificate Courses If a student does not complete the course requirements to achieve an ATAR, they will need to complete a minimum of a Certificate II in addition to their other course enrolments to achieve their WACE. Studying a Certificate Course provides credit towards the number of course units students need to complete to achieve their WACE. The maximum number of Certificate Courses a students can study is 2 per year.

14 TISC (Tertiary Institutions Service Centre) will assign a ranking (ATAR) based on the student TEA (Tertiary Entrance Aggregate) score The TEA is the sum of the best four final scaled scores (max 400) plus 10% of a LOTE scaled score (max 410) TEA will be a combination of 50/50 school and external exam results Tertiary Entrance Aggregate (TEA)

15 ATAR = Australian Tertiary Admission Rank A percentile rank relative to all other students Determined by the No. of students who sit the WACE examinations & no. of people of year 12 leaving age in total population of Australia TISC ranks students because there are more applicants than places Students are numbered from 99.95 down

17 English Language Competence Students must meet required English Language Competence. A scaled score of 50 in an ATAR English or English Literature course will generally meet requirements.

Other choices for next year These pathways are: Futures Course a training program accredited under the Vocational Education and Training Act 1996 (this includes TRAINING WA colleges and private registered training organisations) an apprenticeship or a traineeship approved employment (must complete an NOA) 24

All students must select EIGHT courses, in ranked order. The lowest two ranked courses will be used as reserves if clashes occur or a selected course is not running due to low numbers. Each students course selection availability is dependent upon current academic achievement. (PRE-REQUISITES) All students must select an English course as their first preference. All students must ensure they have at least one LIST A course (shown in red) and one LIST B course (shown in blue) on the selection sheet. ALL students are strongly advised to select a Certificate course. PROCESS

Student wishing to study at university must select at least 4 ATAR courses. Students are strongly advised to select 5 ATAR courses. The 6 th course selected may be another ATAR course OR a General course OR a Certificate course. Selections 7 and 8 are Reserve courses which must be selected in case other courses chosen do not run or do not fit on the timetable. Students taking ONLY 4 ATAR courses MUST select a Certificate course in their first 6 selections. UNIVERSITY BOUND

Students wishing to undertake further training or move straight to the workforce MUST take at least one Certificate course. Note: Some Certificate courses will be completed in one year while others require a two year commitment. Students may then select General, ATAR or a further Certificate Course plus 2 reserve choices.
