Getting Down to Business

The Caribbean not only offers captivating islands for leisure pursuits, it also provides a host of excellentfacilities for business travel and corporate gatherings.

This region can be easily reached fromNorth and South America, Europe andAfrica. There are numerous direct flights, enabling business delegates fromaround the world to easily jet in forevents. Some islands can be reached byregional flights and, in some cases, ferryroutes. Most of the islands have theirown currencies, but accept US Dollars –prices are regularly quoted in thiscurrency.

The Caribbean islands are famous fortheir relaxed way of life, but their charmand welcoming nature also encouragemany international business seminars, meetings and incentives trips. Withglamorous tropical backdrops, theislands provide first‐class hotels, excellent infrastructure and modernconferencing facilities. The largest

of these facilities are concentrated on the islands of The Bahamas,Barbados, Cuba, Jamaica, Martiniqueand Puerto Rico.

Some conference centres are attachedto well‐established hotels, thus makingit easy to manage business events anddelegate accommodation in one place.Alternatively, smaller businessgatherings can be fully hosted atboutique hotels or on tiny, remote island resorts.

Whether the occasion is a largeconference for international businessleaders, a series of commercial meetingsand seminars, or a small group on acorporate incentive trip, the Caribbeanhas an excellent reputation of being thedestination for such events. Businessdelegates will also be rewarded withoutstanding opportunities for relaxationand leisure activities to round off theirtrip, including tropical beaches, golfcourses, restaurants and casinos.

The Caribbean is a diverse region, and much of the different destinations’heritage influences their culture and way of life today. For French flair, sophisticated hotels, upmarketrestaurants and designer boutiques, theFrench‐speaking islands of Guadeloupe,Haiti, Martinique and Saint Martin offerthe best of France within a tropicallandscape. The colonial history of theSpanish Caribbean lives today throughthe islands’ architecture, language, music and dance. These islands includeBelize, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

The Dutch‐speaking islands of theCaribbean are unique in their Dutchheritage combined with modernAmerican culture. The islands of St. Maarten, St. Eustatius, Bonaire andCuracao offer casino resorts, tropicalbeaches, excellent diving opportunitiesand distinctive Dutch‐style architectureto visitors. St Maarten, shared withFrench territory Saint Martin, is thesmallest island in the world.

The Caribbean’s diversity extends to the English‐speakingislands; the largest group in the Caribbean ‐ they stretch fromthe Gulf of Mexico down to the northern coast of Venezuela. These islands have had links with Great Britain for hundreds of years, and include the British and US Virgin Islands, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Jamaica. Some islands, including Anguilla, Bermuda, Cayman Islands and Montserrat, are still British Overseas Territories, and will offer an air offamiliarity to British travellers.

Islands in the north of the Caribbean, including the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and the Turks and Caicos Islandscan be reached by direct flights from the UK. The Bahamas, an archipelago of islands just off the coast of Florida, offersophisticated casino resorts on Nassau and Grand BahamaIsland, while Jamaica’s rugged interior provides manyadventure and outdoor activities for business delegates inpursuit of action away from the conference room.

English‐speaking islands in the east of the Caribbean includeAnguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the British VirginIslands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis,St Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago andthe US Virgin Islands. Anguilla’s superb beaches provide abreathtaking backdrop to any business event held at its luxuryhotels and villas. The island is also known as a gourmet’sparadise, and offers many excellent restaurants for businessgatherings. With its rainforest landscape, pretty capital St George’s and local spice markets, Grenada offers travellers a truly authentic Caribbean experience. The island’s hotels, in unspoilt surroundings, provide a range of excellent meetingfacilities and modern communication infrastructure forbusiness events.

Other English‐speaking Caribbean islands include Trinidad andTobago. These sister islands are vastly different to each other, but combined offer a perfect destination for business. Trinidad’scapital Port of Spain is a commercial centre with large, modernhotels. Tobago is rustic, but the more picturesque island of thetwo and perfect for smaller groups. The island of Bermuda has a British‐based culture perfect for hosting business events. Thepink sandy beaches, world‐renowned golf courses, plush hotelsand spas also offer an idyllic way for delegates to unwind afterconferences and meetings.

With so much to offer – warm hospitality, first‐class conference and hotel facilities, tropical resorts, sportingactivities and more – it’s time to consider the Caribbean for a successful business event.

So, what else makes Grenada – and her sisters islands Carriacou and PetiteMartinique ‐ so different from the otherislands of the Caribbean and the perfectincentive destination?

Some say it’s the celebratory culture that warmly embraces visitors whenthey arrive and the feeling of safety onthe streets: each Friday in Gouyave, taste freshly‐caught fish and otherdelicacies, accompanied by live, localmusic – or explore the Spice Market inthe capital St George’s where farmersoffer home‐made jams and jellies andtheir own spices for sale.

Under the water, Grenada offersattractions for all levels of experience, from beginner to advanced. Martinique is a small island and aseductive little corner of France, whichcombines all the elements of stylishFrench savoir‐faire with a sensuous andfun‐loving Creole joie de vivre.

Blessed with lovely Caribbean beaches, its landscapes loom large in theirmajesty and variety.

The north is a rugged, mountainousregion whose highest point is MountPelée, an active volcano that stands at1397m. Just to the south is a range calledthe Pitons du Carbet, whose peaks reachan impressive 1197m. All thesemountains are swathed in rainforest, dense tangles of oversized trees, creepers and bracken fern cut throughby brooks, springs, and waterfalls. The

north also boasts beaches with sandthat’s silver or bluish‐grey, a sign of their volcanic origins.

The centre of the island is dominated by an alluvial plain. It’s in the centre thatyou will find Martinique’s largest costalswamps of mangrove trees. The roots ofthese trees aren’t underground, but outin the open air, arching over the swampwaters. That’s why mangrove swampsare sometimes called “forests taking a foot bath.”

The south has lots of rocky hills calledmornes, as well as intricate patterns ofvalleys and fjord‐like coves. The southerncoast is graced with idyllic white sandbeaches and striking rockypromontories.

In 1635, the island became a possessionof the French, who oversaw thedevelopment of sugarcane, pineappleand banana plantations. With theseplantations came the need formanpower, so the French resorted to

importing slaves from Africa to work in the fields. Thus began the “triangulartrade.” Slavery in Martinique was finallyabolished by the French government in1848. The next historic milestone wasthe 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée, whichdestroyed the town of St Pierre, theisland capital at the time, and killedalmost all the town’s 30 000 inhabitants.

The island has been marked by multipleinfluences and cultural mixing; itseventful past is evidenced by itsarchitecture, historic monuments andmuseums. Throughout the year, thereare many events where one canparticipate in vibrant traditions andexperience the warmth, creativity andhospitality of local people.

In Martinique you will find two types of cuisine. France gave Martinique atradition of bread, cheese andcharcuterie but you will also find a creolecuisine based on local ingredients suchas papaya gratin, codfish fritters…

Martinique is a French overseasdepartment and many Martinican chefshave studied or worked in France beforereturning to the island to adapt therecipes and technique to the Creolepalate.

Along with great food, Martiniqueproduces great rum. Just as wine loversregularly visit France to savour the bestwine, rum connoisseurs are increasinglymaking their way to Martinique toexperience some of the world’s finestand most distinctive rums.

Martinique is known for its epicureandelights, premium rum and beautifulbeaches, but straying from the beatenpath allows you to experience the islandas locals do. Take l’Ilet Oscar, a secludedand largely deserted islet off the eastcoast of Martinique. It’s home to LaMaison de l’Ilet Oscar and not much else. You can swim, sunbathe and dine ontropical combinations of fresh fish andfruits. Legend has it that Napoleon’sCreole bride bathed in Josephine’s Tub,not far from l’Ilet Oscar, which is howthis pool got its name.

The written history of Nevis begins withthe account recorded by Columbus whenhe sailed by Nevis in 1493. The name Nevisis derived from “Nuestra Senora de LasNieves” which means “Our Lady of theSnows,” because of the cloud cappedmountain reminding Columbus of snow.

Prior to the Columbus saga, Nevis wasnamed Dulcina “Sweet Island” by theArawaks and later Oualie “land ofbeautiful waters” by the Caribs. Later in the 18th century Nevis became knownas “Queen of the Caribees.” Evidence of pre‐ceramic people includes finelycrafted stone tools and intricatelycoloured pottery found at various sitesacross the island.

Over the years Nevis has made a numberof significant contributions to theCaribbean and the World. Two men who

played part in international history wereAlexander Hamilton and Lord HoratioNelson. Hamilton, one of the foundingfathers of the United States and its firstSecretary of the Treasury was born onNevis on January 11, 1757. Nelson,Britain’s most famous admiral, usedNevis as a base of operations in the mid1780s and married a Nevisian; FrancesNisbet in 1787.

Nevis continued to be part of the Britishcolonial holdings until 1967 when itachieved Associated Statehood with St. Kitts. On September 19, 1983 Nevisbecame part of an independent nationand formed part of the sovereigndemocratic state of St.Christopher and Nevis.

At the Four Seasons, the near‐perfectNevisian climate makes the lawns, gardens and beaches available virtuallyevery day of the year. Indoors, 465square metres (5,000 square feet) of luxurious space flows naturally intomore than 279 square metres (3,000square feet) of covered garden terracesoverlooking the Caribbean Sea.

The locals refer to this 11.8 square‐mileisland in the Dutch Caribbean as Statia.Though small, the island reveals asurprisingly rich past to travellers. Duringthe 1700s, Statia’s capital, Oranjestad, was a trading hub for slaves, sugar, cottonand commodities from Europe and the FarEast. At its peak, the island’s populationreached 18,000, and Oranjestad wasperhaps the richest port in all the region. However, in 1776 the government broughtthe wrath of England upon the tiny nationafter recognising the newly independentUnited States by firing an 11‐gun salute toa passing warship. The decline began, andtoday the sleepy island has approximitely4,000 inhabitants.

More than 100 sunken trading ships off the shores of Statia make this adiving mecca; submerged anchors, cannons and pottery shards create asilent testimony to the island’s story. However there are things to do abovethe water too: visitors can take a half‐day hike to the (600m) 2,000 foot Quill, a classically shaped volcano with aforest‐filled crater. Orchids, fruit treesand ferns thrive in this uniqueenvironment.

In Oranjestad, there are quaint andnoteworthy buildings to visit: FortOranje, which was built by the French in 1629, will appeal to history buffs; theDutch Reformed Church, has a tall towerthat offers a bird’s‐eye view of town, andthe St. Eustatius Historical FoundationMuseum is filled with relics from boththe pre‐Columbian period, and thecolonial period. These items areespecially interesting since Statiachanged hands between the French,Dutch and English a whopping 22 times. You’ll find, among countless other items, colonial furniture, nautical instrumentsand blue glass trading beads made bythe Dutch West Indian Company.
