Major Initiatives and Assessments

• Preparation by the Standing Committee of Caribbean Statisticians (SCCS) and the Secretariat of a Regional Statistical Work Programme (RSWP) and a Resolution on Statistical Capacity;

• Approval of the RSWP and passing of the Resolution by the Community Council of Ministers in 2005;

• Establishment of the Advisory Group on Statistics to enable implementation of the RSWP.

Major Initiatives and Assessments

• Caribbean Integration Support Programme (CISP) overall context:

• The Statistical Component is one of several Project activities of the Caribbean Integration Support Programme (CISP) funded by the European Union under the Ninth European Development Fund (9th EDF) amounting to 3.3 Mn euros

• The overall objective of the support is to contribute to the intensification of the Regional Integration Process;

• There are number of expected results such as: the Legal and Institutional framework of the CARICOM Single Market and

Economy (CSME) established and consolidated; Framework for macroeconomic and sectoral policy coordination

developed and improved; CSME administrative capacities at national and regional levels supported.

Major Initiatives and Assessments

• Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) – Common Framework for Statistics Production:

• Overall Objective • To discuss and prepare a diagnostic of regional statistical capacity and an

implementation plan for the RSWP. • Component I - Implementation Plan production which is aimed at

undertaking/reviewing assessments of the National Statistical Offices/Systems in Member Countries as a basis of identifying gaps and developing a five-year implementation plan for the Regional Statistical Work Programme;

• Component II – Collective Action to Address Common Issues in Statistics Legislation, is to contribute to the development of key regulations affecting statistics, such as coordination of the national statistical system, obligations to provide data and confidentiality issues;

• Component III- A Common Approach to Data Warehousing and Archiving which will prepare a regional framework for the warehousing, archiving and dissemination of statistics.

• The major objective of the statistical component under the CISP is:

To provide the decision-makers of CARICOM with the information necessary to monitor and guide progress in the establishment and strengthening of the CSME.

Key Result:

• Improved and Harmonised Economic Statistics Developed and Disseminated.
