Understanding 6-Monoacetylmorphine (6-MAM)
One of three active metabolites of heroin, 6-Monoacetylmorphine or 6-MAM happens as a metabolite once heroin has undergone first-pass metabolism. It is then metabolized into morphine and excreted via the kidneys as urine.
6-MAM arises only from metabolism of heroin. It is not found in poppyseeds and is not a metabolic product of morphine, codeine, or any otheropiate. Therefore, its presence therefore confirms usage of heroin
The presence of 6-MAM is conclusive evidence of prior heroin use. However, due to itsshort half-life, it is only detectable in urine for about 8 hours after administration.
