New Car Test Drive Review

The Passat is the best selling car made in Germany in America. The Passat GLS1.8T is also the cheapest German-built car sold here (at least until the Jetta wagonarrives; less expensive VWs sold in the U.S. are made in Mexico). Maybe the twohave something to do with each other, although the Passat's "rocket for everypocket" may be a factor as well.

Regardless of price, our pick would be the GLS 1.8T. It beats the V6 by severalmore miles per gallon, whether manual or automatic, city or highway and, in ouropinion, feels better doing so. You can always order the special options youwant...unless it's all-wheel drive. If you need or want that extra traction in a sportyGerman sedan, consider the Audi A4. They'll sell you the 1.8T all-wheel drive...andwith a manual transmission, too.

On the other hand, if you're hankering to spend even more, wait 'til next fall whenVolkswagen adds the "W8" engine option to the Passat lineup. This narrow-angle V8is certain to twist the Passat's tail...but be prepared to spend more at the pump andconsiderably more on your monthly payment. Or you could save the money and getyour 1.8T now and start enjoying the virtues of the Passat immediately.

Overview:Volkswagen's Passat has been completely redesigned for 2002. Though the Passatgains bolder contours and new lights front and rear, this new model goes wellbeyond a styling revision. Volkswagen claims the only parts not changed are theroof and the doors. The chassis is 10 percent stiffer and the base engine has gainedhorsepower and torque, at low rpm where it's needed for quicker acceleration fromintersections and robust response around town. Advances inside include new stylingand new side curtain airbags.

Conflicting U.S. and European laws forced Volkswagen to launch its new Passat asa 2001 model, despite the old Passat having been sold since the fall of 2000 as a2001 model also. To deal with this, Volkswagen's marketing people have dubbed thenew Passat a "2001.5" model, a convention we'll follow to avoid confusion. Rush toyour dealer and you may see the Passat being sold as a 2001.5; we view this as a2002 model, however. We expect few changes between 2001.5 and 2002, exceptfor the availability of an exciting new engine.
