Sir George Young MP wins Older People's Champion Award
At the DODS Charity Champion Awards 2009 MPs, peers and charities came together to celebrate the valuable support and contributions that Parliamentarians have made
over the past year to a variety of causes.
Nominated by Kerry Wincott, the Chief Executive of The Princess Royal Trust for Carers in Hampshire, she says, ‘Sir George Young MP has worked tirelessly in addressing issues facing carers locally. He has been a great representative for us both at a local level and in Parliament. He takes time out of his very busy schedule to attend all the events that we hold for carers throughout the year and, at these events, stays and talks to carers, taking on board the problems and issues that they face in their caring roles. He always ensures that he replies to all the carers who present questions to him. Sir George has helped us tremendously in getting our voice heard on behalf of carers in our area and for this we are truly thankful. I feel that he is highly deserving of this award.’
SUPPORT GROUPS OFFER OPPORTUNITIES for carers to get together, to share experiences, raise concerns, and hear informative talks by guest speakers. The Carer Centre runs General Carers Groups for all carers and Mental Health Carers Groups specifically for those who look after someone suffering from a mental health problem. No invite is needed to attend a group meeting—just turn up.
The groups meet as follows:
Andover General Carers Group: Second Monday of each month, between 2pm and 3.30pm at The Bridge in Bridge Street, Andover. (No meeting January or August)
Andover Mental Health Carers Group: Second Tuesday of each month, between 7pm and 8.30pm at Andover Mind, Arcade House, Westbrook Close, Andover. (No meeting January or August)
Romsey Carers Support Group: Third Wednesday of each month, between 10am and 12 o’clock at The Spirituality Centre, Wisdom House, Romsey.
Winchester General Carers Group: First Monday of each month, between 12.30pm and 2pm at the Friends Meeting House, 16 Colebrook Street, Winchester (no meeting January or August)
Winchester Mental Health Group: First Tuesday of each month, between 7.15pm and 8.45pm at the Friends Meeting House, 16 Colebrook Street, Winchester (no meeting January or August)
We look forward to seeing you

Dear All I hope you enjoyed a peaceful Christmas and are looking forward to 2010. As we enter a new decade our mission to improve and refine the services offered to carers in Hampshire in response to their needs continues apace. We continue to focus on raising the quality of the services we provide and are always looking at ways to iden-tify carers and develop more flexible ways of reaching them. Our team across Hampshire work tirelessly to ensure carers get the services and benefits they deserve and in this newsletter you will find details of all our staff so you can see who the Carer Support Worker is in your area and their contact details. Although we publicise our services in many different ways, there are still lots of carers who are not aware of the services we can offer so if you know anyone who is a carer and who doesn’t know about us, please pass our details on so that they can contact us if they need any help or advice with regard to their caring role. I am looking forward to a positive year ahead, taking The Princess Royal Trust for Car-ers in Hampshire forward and making a real difference to carers’ lives. Best wishes Kerry Wincott Chief Executive

Caring with Confidence is a free, Department of Health backed knowledge and skills based learning experience for carers throughout the region. The sessions are open to all adult (over 18) carers, regardless of who you care for or your own personal situation. We can usually help towards the cost of any respite needed for the cared-for person while you attend, unfortunately it isn’t possible for you to bring the person you care for with you to the sessions. We can also help with transport costs if necessary and, of course, the sessions are completely free of charge to you—even the refreshments. The following courses are currently available: To register for a place on current courses or if you would like me to speak at any group or meeting, please do get in touch.

b-eat Family and Friends Support Group (beating eating disorders) The support group for the families and friends of people with eating disorders has moved from Andover to a new venue in Winchester. They now meet from 7.30 to 9.00 pm on the second Wednesday of every month in the new Trinity building at Bradbury House, Durngate Place, Winchester, SO23 8DX. They have a really nice meeting room on the first floor of the building, there is a lift for disabled access, tea and coffee making facilities, and free parking on site or in the public car park next door. The group is facilitated by Mary and Sarah who both have experience of caring for a family member with an eating disorder. They are volunteers for the b-eat (beating eating disorders) self help network so will adhere to their guidelines and take part in their training to keep up to date with new information and ideas. The group is small, informal and friendly. If you would like more information please phone 07900 490609 on Monday evenings between 6.30 and 9.00 (answerphone message at other times), or email [email protected] (emails answered within a week).
New and Key Titles on Dementia Care
Telling Tales About Dementia Edited by Lucy Whitman Forward by Joanna Trollope In Telling Tales About Dementia, thirty carers from different backgrounds and in different circumstances share their experiences of caring for a parent, partner or friend with dementia. They speak from the heart about love and loss. ‘I still find it hard to believe that Alzheimer’s has happened to us,’ writes on contributor, ‘as if we were sent the wrong script’. The stories told here vividly reflect the tragedy of dementia, the gravity of loss, and the instances of unsatisfactory diagnosis, treatment and care. But they contain hope and optimism too: clear indications that the quality of people’s lives can be enhanced by sensitive support services, by improved understanding of the impact of dementia, by recognising the importance of valuing us all as human beings and by embracing and sustaining the connections between us. The Simplicity of Dementia A Guide for Family and Carers Huub Buijssen The author bases this book not only on his professional outlook as a psycho-gerontologist and clinical psychologist, but also as a son, whose own father suffered with dementia. It brings the book to a more interesting level through the personal effect of dementia.’
