The University of Melbourne - Doctor of MedicineStudents have been asking if it is possible to gain entry into the Doctor of Medicine from the Bach-elor of Arts at Melbourne.

This is possible, however, students should be aware that in order to pursue this path, they must complete the relevant prerequisite subjects using the breadth component of their Arts degree. (This requires completion of Units 3/4 Chemistry in VCE.)

If students choose this pathway, they should also be aware that they:

• Can only complete one Arts major (double majors are not possible for students in this pathway)

• Are unable to major in Psychology or Economics in their Arts degree• Are unable to minor in Law and Justice• Cannot choose any additional breadth in their Arts degree aside from the prerequisites required for the MD• Must have completed Units 3/4 Mathematical Methods or Further Mathematics in VCE.

Students following this pathway have been select-ed into the MD in the past; however they may also wish to consider the Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Biomedicine and choosing Arts sub-jects in the breadth component of their degree, or completing a concurrent diploma.

SPOTLIGHT ON: ArchitectArchitects use creativ-ity and a practical understand-ing of struc-tures and materials to develop concepts, plans, speci-

fications and detailed drawings for buildings and other structures. They negotiate with builders and planning authorities, administer building contracts and inspect work that has been carried out.Architects may perform the following tasks:• discuss requirements of clients or builders (to de-sign a new structure or modify an existing one) and prepare a brief• prepare sketches, production drawings and detailed drawings by hand or using computer-aided design (CAD) software• combine structural, mechanical and artistic ele-ments into the building design, such as decks and atriums, lifts, air conditioning systems and decorative finishes• discuss designs and cost estimates with clients and others involved in the project, including engineers, quantity surveyors, landscape architects, and urban and regional planners• obtain necessary approvals from authorities• prepare specifications and contract documents for builders, tradespeople and legal advisers, specifying building materials, construction equipment and, in some cases, the interior furnishings• observe, inspect and monitor building work to ensure it is progressing according to the contract and specifications• evaluate projects once they are completed and oc-cupied.

Specialisations:Architects often specialise in particular types of work, such as domestic, low-rise commercial, high-rise commercial, industrial, conservation and heritage buildings. Architects need to keep up with changing trends in the construction industry and the commu-nity. They have considerable contact with the public.Architects may also be involved in project feasibil-ity studies, strategic asset investigations, heritage studies, urban planning, interior design or landscape design.

Personal Requirements:• enjoy design • creativity • able to analyse problems logically • good communication skills.

Education and Training:To become an architect you usually have to complete an accredited degree in architecture. This usually consists of a degree in arts or design with a major in architecture, followed by a Master of Architecture.Architectural training includes the ability to com-bine arts, science and technology. This means that architects increasingly find work in areas outside of architecture, such as urban planning and design, property development, construction management, interior design, industrial design, teaching, research and journalism.Architects must also be registered with the Architects Registration Board in the state or territory in which they intend to practise. To apply for registration you must complete an accredited architecture degree, have two years of monitored experience with an architectural firm, and sit an examination in archi-tectural practice set by the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) and run by the Architects Registration Board of Victoria.
