OPEN DAY INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

At Deakin, we recognise that it’s just as important for parents to be informed about their child’s university options as it is for future students. Here’s four reasons why parents should attend Open Day with their child:

• learn how the VTAC application process works

• find out about the costs of university, as well as financial assistance and scholarships

• gain an understanding of VCE prerequisites and extra requirements for course entry

• find out how Deakin equips students to make a successful transition to tertiary study through a range of support programs and services.

FREE ACCOMMODATION AT WARRNAMBOOL OPEN DAY

OPEN DAY HIGHLIGHTS

What tips do you have for prospective students on how to get the most out of Open Day?

‘ Ask questions, definitely, and learn more about being on campus, cloud and other opportunities. I wish I had learnt more about my campus and done tours rather than spending time focusing solely on my course.’

‘ Make sure to bring a notepad and list down the positives and negatives of the university and the course you’re interested in. This list will come in handy to help you decide when choosing the right path towards your future career.’

‘ Take in the vibe of the campus, not just the course information!’

‘ I would recommend coming with a group of people who are going to give you the space and time you need to see all the areas you want to. Coming with a group of friends can be great so you learn more about the courses that they are interested in as well as yours. But make sure that if there’s something specific that you want to see, you get that opportunity even if it’s not something that other people are interested in. At the end of the day it’s your future not theirs!’

What did you learn when you attended Deakin’s Open Day as a prospective student?

‘ I remember learning that you could join clubs and teams as a Deakin student, which I thought looked pretty cool and like it would be a great way to make new friends. I also saw how approachable all the students were and how passionate they were about their degree and about Deakin in general. It felt like a very inclusive atmosphere which was different to some of the other Open Days that I had been to.’

‘ I learnt a lot of broad information about my faculty, and then some more information specifically on my course. I learnt about lectures and tutorials, and some differences between high school and university.’

‘ I learnt about what types of accommodation was offered. Seeing it in person was a lot better than just reading about it and seeing photographs.’

Take in the vibe of the

campus, not just the course

information!

TIPS FROM FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

Take the following advice from some of our first-year students to help you get the most out of Open Day.

Knowing what you now know about University, what would you have done differently when attending Open Day as a prospective student?

‘ I would have made more friends with other students attending Open Day. It would have made the day more fun! Add them to your facebook, send them an email or tweet, because it sure feels relieving to know someone on the first day of university!’

‘ I wouldn’t have been afraid to ask questions and I would have had a plan for what I wanted to be shown.’

‘ I would have made sure that I spoke to current students, as they give more in depth details.’

‘ I would have checked out courses I had general interest in, not just ones I had my heart set on.’

This months’ recommendation is from Student Recruitment Officer, Jenna McMeel.

The David Parkin Oration for Sport and Social Change delivered by the Hon. Jeff Kennett AC, focused on ‘Professionalism of sport – a threat to good health’. Mr Kennett reflected on his work with beyondblue to address the impact that sport and sporting figures can play in raising awareness of depression and anxiety. The oration certainly left the audience thinking about sport and health from a different perspective. Listen to the oration here: http://adobe.ly/1NxrxjJ and see whether it changes your perspective!
