Study with Bendigo TAFE

Types of study

Bendigo TAFE provides you with a number of different ways to complete your studies so you have greater control around where, when and how you learn. Course delivery varies between classroom based, workplace training and assessment, online or a combination.

Full timeFull time study is dependent on each course, its delivery method and requirements. Check with the teacher within your chosen area of study to find out more.

Part timeLess than a normal full time load. A course may be scheduled in the day or evening.

Preapprenticeship Studies in a preapprenticeship course prepares you for the working environment in your selected industry. It gives you some basic skills or helps you to improve your existing skills, paving the way for the training you will receive as part of an apprenticeship.

ApprenticeshipAn apprenticeship combines on the job training with study. Students undertaking these studies will need to have secured an apprenticeship with an employer prior to accessing this training. Study requirements will vary dependent on the vocation.

TraineeshipA traineeship combines on the job training with study. Students undertaking these studies will need to have secured a traineeship with an employer prior to accessing this training. There may be a requirement to attend some classroom based learning or alternatively studies may be a combination of off-campus and employment based training and assessment.

Flexible deliveryThis study option combines a number of delivery methods and attendance types.

Off campus This training is not delivered in a classroom but is off campus without face to face class teacher/trainer time. We utilise alternative delivery methods such as online and workbooks. Off-campus students are provided with phone and email support from tutors.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)If you can provide evidence that you already have the relevant skills and knowledge in relation to a particular industry, these competencies can then be measured against the equivalent unit(s) in the relevant course.

2014 Careers GuideStudy with Bendigo TAFE

Level of study

Foundation level (Foundation level and preaccredited courses) These courses assist people to develop the skills they need in literacy, numeracy, language, self management and job readiness. People undertaking these courses may have left school before completing year 12, and may have missed out on the base level learning needed for further training.

Skills creation (Certificate I and II) These courses are for people who wish to undertake basic training in an industry area, either because they need to use the relevant skills immediately in the workplace, or because they wish to prepare for entry to work in that industry.

Skills building (Certificate III and IV)These courses are for people who want to enter a skilled trade or practice an occupation that calls for skills and knowledge beyond the basic level. Qualifications at this level require significant commitment by learners and may provide entry to licensed or otherwise regulated skilled occupations.

Skills deepening (Diploma and Advanced Diploma) These are for people who are progressing to a higher level within an industry area in which they already have employment or wish to enter employment at the more skilled, specialised or paraprofessional level.

Short coursesGive your qualifications a boost by choosing a short course at Bendigo TAFE.

Bendigo TAFE offer short courses across a broad range of study areas. Our short courses give people the opportunity to enhance experience, skills and knowledge. These courses are suitable for those looking to advance their career, wanting to try something new, or take on a new hobby. We also have a number of courses that meet licensing and industry compliance needs.

Our short courses are offered at various dates, times and campus locations throughout the year, with some courses also offering an online option. Applications are open throughout the year and students are invited to enrol before the commencement date, dependent on demand. Concessions are available for some courses.

Many of our short courses give you accredited units towards a nationally recognised qualification. So, if you do come to us for further study, you may be eligible for credits. Bendigo TAFE also offers courses specific for your company needs and at a venue that suits you.

2014 Careers Guide

What is a pathway?

A pathway is the sequence of studies you select to reach the qualification and career of your choice. Often, you can reach the same outcome via a number of pathway options.

In some cases, a TAFE qualification needs to be completed to be considered, and in others a partial completion may be sufficient.

There are often many ways to achieve the career of your choice including formal and informal learning, employment and general life experience. Different courses can take you towards the same job or courses can act as a stepping stone towards your career goals.

What pathways can I take?

Pathway from school to TAFEBendigo TAFE has partnered with a number of schools across the region to deliver Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) and Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) programs.

These programs are an alternative pathway through senior secondary school. Students undertake industry-focused training as well as studying the traditional school curriculum. The programs give students in years 10, 11 and 12 a head start on TAFE training, apprenticeships or employment once they complete secondary school.

Bendigo TAFE’s BTEC Campus also delivers a range of vocationally-oriented programs including VETiS, VCAL and Australian School Based Apprenticeships. Courses offered vary from school to school.

Pathways from TAFE to universityOne of the key pathways that people can take from a TAFE course is the one to university. Many TAFE qualifications, such as advanced diploma, diploma and some certificate IV qualifications, provide credits towards a university undergraduate course. This means that you can gain credits towards completion of your chosen undergraduate course without studying similar units.

Bendigo TAFE has a number of formal arrangements in place with La Trobe University, Deakin University, Monash University and Federation University.

Bendigo TAFE’s partnerships with universities give you credit points towards some degrees, in areas such as; nursing , information technology, management, education, applied management, commerce , business, hospitality, science, arts and early childhood education.
