Recruitment Strategies - Career Awareness Programs

• Initiated in 2001 as a response to changing workforce demographics and research into perceptions by area students of Mayo as a career option

• Imperative to commit resources to assist students with career exploration to help assure adequate supply of qualified health care professionals in the future

• Emphasis on education and industry partnerships to promote career exploration/confirmation by students

• Supported by leadership as long term investment essential to future recruitment success

Career Awareness Program Design

• Offer range of program experiences from 6th grade through early college

• Programs for younger students focus on developing awareness of career options, emphasizing study habits and stimulating interest in science and math classes

• Programs for grades 10-12 focus on above as well as affirming choice of planned major in college or career

• Students required to do some prep work to qualify to participate in programs to assure a focused audience – has been well received by teachers, parents and students

“Medical Careers”• What is it?

– Class offered to Century, JM, & Mayo

– Curriculum: Career Exploration, Anatomy, Physiology, Terminology, First Responder…and more

– Nursing Assistant State Approved Program

– 3 classes per day…each class is 98 minutes

– Full year class – two semesters

• Facts about Medical Careers:– # of students: ’04: 60, ’05: 90, ‘06: 120 (however student being

turned away each year)

– Class ran ~30% - 40% diverse (School runs ~27%-28%)

– HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) activity: • Daily class work

Health Sciences Career Center: The Rationale

• Rochester Public Schools career awareness class annually at risk at budget time

• Very popular class and considered essential to make local students aware of health care careers in general and promote Mayo as employer of choice

• Opportunity to expand program from a weekly two hour class to a half day curriculum including science and math classes

• Broaden focus from Nursing Assistant training to full spectrum of allied health care career fields

Health Science Careers Center (HSCC)• Partners: Rochester Public Schools, Rochester

Community and Technical College, and Mayo Clinic• Objective: To maximize community resources that will

allow the medical careers program to expand to meet the needs of the students and the growing demand for medical professionals

• Focus: “What is best for the students”; all partners have used this as the “lighthouse” knowing that their individual benefits will surface in the end

• Mayo Benefits: developing relationships with local and diverse students (future applicants), better prepared students for post-secondary (careers available and requirements), and community relations

What is the HSCC doing today?

• Created curriculum for Introduction to Health Science Careers, Therapeutic Medicine, Pharmacy Tech., and Biomedical Science

• Students enroll in one semester of the Intro. to Health Science Careers and the second semester they choose a pathway

HOSA: Health Occupation Students of America

• HOSA events offer an opportunity for students to gain stronger teamwork, leadership, and communication skills.

• Events are integrated into our curriculum and students compete in competitions throughout the year.

• Students can complete observations in a variety of Health Science Facilities throughout the Rochester Community

• Adding more pathways such as Emergency Responder while improving current pathways

• Students receiving Tech Prep credit for medical terminology• Offer more state and nationally recognized certifications• Strengthen our current partnerships while continuing to

create new ones • Continue to increase enrollment in the program and in HOSA• Increase the number of students volunteering throughout the

community
