‘Crossing Our Bridges’ Health Academy

Twenty-three Yukon-Koyukuk School District and Galena City School District students in 10th-12th grade from across Alaska participated in the 2014 'Crossing Our Bridges' Health Academy provided by YKSD and hosted by Galena Interior Living Academy (GILA). Traditional school students and home school students from the district were split into two groups to complete two intensive classes while in Galena. This academy combined modern day skills and knowledge with traditional knowledge to better prepare students for a rural life after high school.

Students spent half the day in the Emergency Trauma Technician class learning knowledge and skills necessary to provide first emergency care in an emergency situation. Students earned state certification, high school credit, and college credit for this hands-on course. This course prepared students to go onto careers in Health Care, Fire Fighting, or Emergency Care.

During the other half of the day students participated in the Alaska Health and Nutrition course. During the first week of the class, students learned about wellness, traditional uses of Alaska Native plants and animals, celebrated Native cultures, highlighted traditional foods, created recipes from food harvested locally, and developed skills in collaboration, leadership and self-esteem through the development of "Store Outside Your Door" episode found at the website: www.storeoutside.com.

‘Crossing Our Bridges’ Health Academy Cont.

During the second week, the students participated in digital storytelling by integrating their own voice, existing images, and music into a brief multi-media first person narrative that engages others into a given wellness subject. Students were guided through a process combining traditional storytelling with modern-day technology and digital media. Student projects may be viewed on the Alaska Native Center for Digital Storytelling at andigitalstories.com. The stories are listed by student’s first name and the name of their film. Students will receive both high school and college credit for this course and it prepares them for a variety of different types of careers in Health Science, tribal management, and journalism.

YKSD would like to thank our partners for this academy: Tanana Chiefs Conference, Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, Galena City School District, Interior Region EMS, University of Alaska Fairbanks Interior Aleutians Campus, Jan Dick, Bob Hawkins, Kathleen Edwin, Galena Volunteer Fire Department, and all the staff of GILA.

In Section B of the Sunday, May 11th Fairbanks News Miner is a great article on the Health Academy.

Career Planning Class in Manley Hot Springs

Students in Manley Hot Springs participated in Career Planning class during the second semester. As part of the class, students took part in a job shadow in Fairbanks at the end of March. Below find the student reflections of their job shadows.

Northern Power Sports Job Shadow

By Kjetil Jervsjo

I went to work at Northern Power Sports for 5 days as a run around boy. My job was to do anything and everything that people told me to do. I mostly just worked on getting new snowmobiles and ATV’s put together right out of the crate. I also worked on putting windows and tops on some used UTV side by sides that they had out in the yard.

As I was there it was the week they were moving in to their new shop. We were constantly moving parts and tools and the workers personal things over to the brand new shop. That took up a lot of my time as well; I was busy the majority of the time I was there. I would have liked to be busy while I was there but I was asking to do too much. All the people that I was doing chores for said I was working too hard for this job and I needed to slow down.

I was mostly working with this other kid named Weston; I call him a kid because he was the youngest worker at NPS. He was an awesome person to work with because he would joke around with me; he knew what he was doing, he understood how frustrating some things were I was doing, because he went through the same thing.

I also want to give a big shout out to Dee-Dee and Ken Born for letting me stay with them all week and feeding me every morning and night and packing me a lunch! I REALLLLLLLYYYYYY appreciate it you guys! Thank you, and another shout out to Jerry who works at NPS for giving me a ride back and forth to work everyday! I owe ya one! Thank you, and thank you to everyone here at the school and the district office for making this opportunity available to me.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!

Job Shadow Review By Ryan Mae Hoffman

The job shadow that I went on impacted on my attitude toward school by making me finalize my decision of staying in school and becoming a registered nurse. It changed my judgments because before I went, I thought that everyone there would rush from room to room, especially in the emergency room, and it was a lot more fun than I thought it would’ve been. The only surprises that I had was the difference between the ways that the nurses talk to patients vs. each other. I thought that the way they talked to each other would sound more professional, and the way they talked to patients would be less professional, but it was just the opposite. The only other surprise that I had was that the nurses didn’t seem careful when they were getting the different types of medicine or antibiotics. The job shadow will help shape my future because it has taught me what to expect, how to address patients, and that when you give a report about the patient you have to word things a certain way. The communications are hard. They use symbols and abbreviations for everything. You have to know the abbreviated words and what the symbols indicate. They use the abbreviations and symbols mostly to describe the patient. They also have split up the different sections of the emergency room. I enjoyed this job shadow very much! I hope that I soon get to do this again. The only thing that could have made it better was if I got there a little bit earlier so that I could have helped with the patients that had just got flown out because of cuts and burns. I would have LOVED to help with that. This job shadow helped me finalize my decision of finishing school and becoming a registered nurse. I can’t wait till I start working there myself.

Job Shadow By Kaitlyn Hoffman

In my job shadow experience, I learned many things. But the most important thing I learned is that I want to be a registered nurse for the rest of my life. I think that something I expected for the E.R. was people running around yelling, snapping bones into place, and giving people CPR. That assumption was very wrong. No one was running around and everyone was calm.

I learned that nursing involves a lot of computer skills. The emergency department has an elaborate system of pods and rooms. I shadowed a nurse named Abrahm. He told me that nurses that work in the emergency department take turns at different jobs. There’s the triage room, (which is the room where a nurse interviews patients that need to go to the E.R. and classifies the emergencies. Then they lead the patient to the correct pod and room.), then there are nurses in each pod. There are four pods and about three or four nurses to each pod. Each pod consists of five rooms.

A nurse named Laura told me that life threatening emergencies don’t happen all the time, maybe about once a month or so. Nurses usually work twelve- hour shifts and only certain days of the week, it could be night or day.

A very common thing that nurses do is administering I.V.’s. They also take blood pressure, monitor breathing and heart rates. They need approvals from the doctor for everything. They also give the patient medicine and make sure they are comfortable.

The job shadow wasn’t the only thing we did in Fairbanks. We went to the ice park and the movies also. We saw lots of beautiful ice art. There were also slides and stairs and swings. We had so much fun. When we went to the movies, we saw Pompeii. Pompeii was about ancient Italy when a volcano went off and destroyed the city called Pompeii.

We bought our own groceries and cooked them at Wedgewood. We had pineapple chicken one night, and chicken and beef burritos the next. Everything was fresh and delicious. I’m glad we cooked our own food.

The job shadow was my favorite part. Everyone was no nice to us. I learned a lot about nursing, things I didn’t expect to learn. I know that this is the job for me. It’s exciting and you never know what’s coming next. I’m glad I did this. It was a very good experience.

Job Shadow By Alexis Woellert

I went to Advanced Printing on my job shadow. I shadowed Miss Carrie and asked questions with the employees and the boss Chuck. So after my tour of the building, there was the main room where the customers came in and Miss Carrie spoke politely and helped the customer. Behind the counter they had a normal copier like the one the school has, then they had a long printer that was almost the length of the room. There was two offices in the building and the fist office was for the boss Chuck and the second office was for Miss Carrie and she explained to me that they had to be very organized and that they use Adobe for the main tool as a graphic designer.

The next room was the printing press maker where they could make the paper to copy for the printing press and they need a paper for every color even if it was the smallest dot. Then another room was the bulk mailroom, which they send out people’s mail and they would package and mail them. The next room was the printing press room where they have three 1950s “windmills” which could be more useful than the newer printers; the newest printing press shot out 7,000 to 70,000 copies a second. Next to the hallway was the cutting room where they held all of the smaller equipment but the had stapler and hole punchers. Across the cutting room was the biggest printer in Alaska and it could print from eight feet wide and however long it needed to be. They had a break room but I didn’t go in there. The little hallway was filled with tons of papers of all kinds and when I asked Chuck about how much all the paper they used cost a month he said “Thousand upon thousands of dollars.” Then they had there job tickets which was always organized and they had eleven sections which helped organize them from B&W Copies off the Glass, Estimates, Type Settings, Outside Orders, B&W Copies, Computer Files, Linotronic which is the printing press, proofs customers bring in, Hold, Color Copies, Ripper, Proofs faxed or emailed. In the small hallway with all the paper they have a shelf full of job tickets from three years back. The job tickets let Miss Carrie and who ever else know what has been done or hasn’t been finished. To go more on this topic the organization is even in the computers where they have the list of who and what the customers have previously ordered. The other half of my job shadow was at the UAF arts department. I got a tour around the department and I got to see some of the artwork of the other students on campus and they were awesome and amazing it was unbelievable. It would be amazing when I go to college and learn to do all techniques they have learned.

Voyage to Excellence Phases

In partnership with Chugach School District’s Voyage to Excellence program, we have offered a variety of career building and awareness camps this school year in Anchorage. Students have participated in the HSGQE Phase, Culinary Phase, New Beginnings Phase, and the Engineering/Robotics Phase. At all of the camps, students learn communication skills, teamwork, and practice urban living skills. The HSGQE Phase took place in September and in March with five students attending each session. The students received in individualized instruction designed to build their skills in reading, writing, and math. The students learned test-taking strategies and also took the HSGQE. Students participated in focused study groups, got proper night’s rest, exercised each morning, and ate a well-balance diet.

The Culinary Phase took place February 3rd to 8th, with three students participating. Students received instruction about how to handle and prepare food safely, including hand washing, cross-contamination, and temperature control. Students obtained their Alaska Food Handler Certification, which is required for anyone working in a restaurant or food service setting. Students learned about a variety of culinary careers and post-secondary educational options, through field trips to culinary academies and a service project. The New Beginnings Phase fro middle school students took place February 17th to 20th. This was an introductory phase for middle school students. Seven YKSD students attended. Students and staff live, eat, work, and learn together. Activities are focused on building trust, teambuilding, and communication. Students also are introduced to different career possibilities.

The Introduction to Engineering & Robotics Phase took place April 28th – May 2nd with one student attending. The phase provided the students with an introduction to careers in the fields of Robotics and Engineering. The students built and programed small robots, which performed simple tasks. They got to tour the Cook Inlet Tribal Council’s Fabrication Lab and received a demonstration of the revolutionary new 3D Printing technology.
