Resume Overview

PURPOSE OF A RESUME Your resume is meant to show a potential employer your most relevant experience to peak their interest and help you get an interview.

THE FIVE-STEP PROCESS TO A GREAT RESUME1. DEFINE THE PURPOSE OF YOUR RESUME• Are you applying for a job? Attending a career fair? Networking with a local

professional? All of the above?• Write Your “Objective” (optional): The objective section of your resume is not

required. However, it can be a helpful tool you can use to target your resume to a specific employer and position. The objective should be simple and straight-forward, only stating which position you are applying for at which company.

2. REFLECT AND DOCUMENT YOUR EXPERIENCE • “Experience” includes:

Work experience (paid employment), internship/volunteer experienceEducation (Degree/Certifications) & relevant classes takenPersonal hobbies and interests that may be relevant Relevant class projects (research, presentations, reports, etc.)Leadership & involvement (i.e. clubs, groups, associations) Technical (computer, software, field-related) & language skillsAwards/honors/scholarships from any of the above experiences

• Use strong action verbs to describe your experience. Focus on documenting your skills, accomplishments and results rather than just listing job duties.

3. TAILOR YOUR RESUME TO THE POSITION• Are some of your experiences not related to the position? If not, then think of

some skills you gained that might be relevant to the position (i.e. customer service, attention to detail, working on a team, presentation experience, etc.)

• Consider highlighting your relevant experience by customizing your sections (i.e. Customer Service Experience, Programming Experience)

4. FORMAT APPROPRIATELY• 10-12 pt. font & easy to read• Avoid columns, right justify your experience and education• Keep your experience to 1 page

5. REVIEW! REVIEW! REVIEW! Have someone else look at your resume. Stop by Career Connections to get feedback from professionals who know what employers are looking for. Remember, if you list an experience or responsibility on your resume, be prepared to talk to about it in the interview.

Tolosa Winery4910 Edna Rd.San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

Dear Mr. Castenada,

This letter is in response to the Tasting Room Team Member position with Tolosa Winery, which was advertised on CuestaJOBS at Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo. In reviewing your website, I was impressed with your emphasis on customer service and the variety of wine tasting experiences you offer to your guests. My customer service experience, passion for learning, and outgoing personality would make me a good fit for this position.

The job description requires someone with strong customer service experience, passion for learning, and an outgoing personality. In my current position as a Barista at Starbucks, I learned and exhibited excellent customer service in one of the most fast-paced coffee shops in town. In order to ensure accuracy of our orders and connect with guests, I created a system to memorize customers' names and specific beverage requests.

As a Communications student at Cuesta College, I offer critical problem solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences. Last semester, I led four group members in developing a feasibility study project for the Paso Robles Wine Center. Altogether, I feel what I have learned at Cuesta and my customer service experience makes me an ideal candidate for this position. I would be honored to be given the chance to work for an innovative and customer-driven winery such as Tolosa Winery. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Rory TevlinRory Tevlin
