Modern working life demands career and life design

• When we get new experiences, we gather new stories to our life-portrait.

• By telling our story or writing a life-portrait we reconstruct our past.

• We choose and reconstruct an identity we can commit to, through everyday activities, in different life-roles in different contexts.

• The self-making is a narrative art, a craft that can be learned and practised.

• Composing a self-portrait gives voice to your authentic stories, different meanings and values and can restart something that was

forgotten.

Composing a self-portrait (10 min):1. Who did you admire when you were growing up? Describe the

character traits that you admired.

2. Do you follow any blogs, social media channels or websites or read magazines or watch television shows regularly? Which ones?  What do you like about these magazines or television shows or websites?

3. What is your favourite book or movie? Write briefly about the the story.

4. Success formula (use yourself, setting and script to write a one-sentence mission statement)

5. What is your favourite saying or motto?

Discuss with the person next to you (15 min.)

1.Who did you admire: Which traits do you also possess or want to develop?

2. These take you to another place, setting or theatre: Are these the places and activities you would like to be in? How do you place yourself in these environments? What would be your role there? What do these settings and your role tell about your interests?

3. This is the script for yourself to perform in that stage. Is it a career script? Does it say something about your possible futures? Does it say something about dealing with your current problems?

4+5. Success Formula ja motto: This articulates the best advice that you have for yourself right now. This is the way you can advance your story to a new chapter, and become more of a self you wish to become.

”This is what I would have liked to hear in my first study year:”

• Studying is such a short part of working life, enjoy it!

• It is useful to ask when you dont know.

• A good salary doesnt compensate a lacking motivation. If you are not interested, your visit in the company will probably be short.

• In your first permanent job many things might be confusing. Becoming a specialist takes years. Have som patience!

• Every workplace has its own inner dynamics. It is a chance to learn about yourself with different people in variable situations.
