CAREER DIRECTION STARTS HERE HIGHMARK INTERNSHIP PROGRAM - 2013 HANDBOOK - 2013 HANDBOOK HIGHMARK.COM INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP ACTIVITIES Strategies for Development Career success requires a serious commitment to ongoing learning and self development. Real learning seldom has a distinct beginning and end; rather it is an ongoing, cyclical process. The book Development FIRST describes a process that includes fve strategies to drive development and establish a cycle of continuous learning. Focus on priorities: Identify your critical issues and goals Implement something every day: Stretch your comfort zone Refect on what happens: Extract maximum learning from your experiences Seek feedback and support: Learn from others’ ideas and perspectives Transfer learning to the next level: Adapt and plan for continued learning Speakers’ Series Highmark’s mission is to be the leading health and wellness company in the communities we serve. Interns will have the opportunity to attend a series of business focused presentations to develop an understanding of Highmark priorities and strategies that support our corporate mission. Presenters will discuss the forces shaping the health care industry such as Health Care Reform and the actions we are taking to successfully compete in the marketplace. Additional topics include the impact of Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace, marketplace and community as well as Talent Management initiatives. Interns will also tour a Highmark Direct Store. Professional Foundation KnowledgeCenter All interns will have access to the Professional Foundation KnowledgeCenter. This resource provides a variety of online development options. The KnowledgeCenter includes: courses, simulations, job-aids, books, skill briefs, case study vignettes, featured articles and websites. You are encouraged to review the available resources, select those that support your performance goals and discuss your individual development plans with managers and mentors. Community Service Project Highmark has a tradition of helping build stronger, healthier communities. As part of the Highmark Internship Program you will participate in a Community Service Project. It is our hope that each of you will have a greater appreciation and understanding of the problems and rewards related to the care and support of the community in which we live. You will have the opportunity to see that your eforts, small as they might seem, can make a diference. The Community Afairs department will coordinate volunteer placements. Presentations to Managers and Mentors What did you learn from your Highmark Internship? Each intern will prepare and make a presentation on what you learned from your internship, or other topic agreed upon with your manager. The audience will consist of your managers, mentors, peers and special guests. Highmark Internship Program SharePoint Site A SharePoint site has been established for the Highmark Internship Program. All interns and their managers and mentors have access to the site. The site will provide you with the opportunity to connect with your peers, review shared documents, stay current on scheduled activities and complete surveys.
