In the Graphic Design & Imaging program students learn the process of visual communication and problem-solving through the use of typography, photography, and illustration. The field is considered a subset of visual communication and communication design, but sometimes the term “graphic design” is used synonymously. Graphic designers create and combine symbols, images, and text to form visual representations of ideas and messages. They use typography, visual arts, and page layout techniques to create visual compositions. Common uses of graphic design include corporate design (logos and branding), editorial design (magazines, newspapers and books), advertising, web design, communication design, product packaging, and signage. Adobe Creative Suite programs utilized with a high concentration on InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat. A cumulative portfolio will be established at the end of every course for employment and/or higher education.Types of Degrees, Certificates, Examples of Careers:

Software Programs Utilized
Graphics Design & Imaging IntroductionThe goal of this course is for students to acquire the publishing, drawing and photo manipulating and editing skills needed for graphic design for industry and/or higher education through various lessons, assignments, and projects. This course covers the following areas of study: digital computer layout, design, electronic pre-press, scanning, desktop and electronic publishing, formatting and manipulating text and graphics, computer drawing, vector artwork design, formatting, enhancing, correcting, and manipulating images, for print and the web. In addition, all the Graphics and Printing Technology and Communications Program Segments will be introduced which include, industry overview, safety & health, design and image output and development, finishing operations, employability skills, applied academics, new media, leadership skills, and project management. Adobe Creative Suite Software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop & Acrobat) will be utilized. A cumulative electronic portfolio is produced upon completion of this course. This course covers the following areas of study: advanced digital computer layout, design, electronic pre-press desktop and electronic publishing, formatting and manipulating text and graphics, computer drawing, vector artwork design, 3D vector artwork, perspective drawings, animation, formatting, enhancing, correcting, and manipulating images, for print and the web. In addition, all the Graphics and Printing Technology and Communications Program Segments will be covered which include, industry overview, safety & health, design and image output and development, finishing operations, employability skills, applied academics, new media, leadership skills, and project management. Adobe Creative Suite Software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop & Acrobat) will be utilized. A cumulative electronic portfolio is produced upon completion of this course. Graphics Design & Imaging AdvancedThis course reinforces, establishes, and strengthens the technical graphic design specific for industry and/or higher education through various Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat tutorials. This course covers the following areas of study: advanced digital computer layout, design, electronic pre-press desktop and electronic publishing, formatting and manipulating text and graphics, vector artwork design, 3D vector artwork, perspective drawings, animation, formatting, enhancing, correcting, and manipulating images, for print and the web. Students will participate in their CTSO further to develop their technical and leadership skills utilizing advanced tutorials and projects supporting the graphics school projects. A cumulative electronic portfolio is produced upon completion of this course. Articulation AgreementArticulation Agreement (Students who fulfill the requirements of items 1 through 4 must submit a portfolio for review. The college faculty will review the student’s portfolio and may grant up to 12 semester hours of articulated credit.) Eligible students could qualify for tuition-free (articulated) credits at various colleges. Chippewa Valley High School agree that students successfully completing the Graphics Design & Imaging program at the Chippewa Valley High School who meets the following requirements can receive select credit in the Media & Communication Arts program at Macomb Community College.
1. Student must successfully complete the Chippewa Valley High School’s Graphic Arts Technology program with a GPA of 2.5 and an overall GPA of 2.0.2. Student receives recommendation from the Chippewa Valley High School Graphic Arts Technology Instructor.3. Student must enroll in the Media & Communication Arts program at Macomb Community College within 3 years of high school graduation.4. Applicants for credit must meet all college admission requirements and be an enrolled/registered student in good standing.5. Course credit will be added to the student’s transcript upon successful completion of the appropriate advanced level course and the payment of a transaction fee ($5.00 per transaction at the time of this agreement). Regular tuition and fees for credit granted under this agreement will be waived.
Students who fulfill the requirements of items 1 through 4 must submit a portfolio for review. MCC Media & Communications Arts faculty will review the student’s portfolio and may grant up to 12 semester hours of articulated credit. Note: Graphics Design & Imaging classes satisfies the Visual Performing and Applied Arts Credit needed for the Michigan Merit Curriculum / High School Graduation requirement.
