Although the Football Stadium and Sainsbury’s supermarket are still set to go ahead, the cinema, bowling alley and restaurants have been put on hold. A Director of Terrace Hill, the property Developers leading the project, said, “It is regrettable, but unlikely, that this element of our proposals will proceed. “However, we are actively looking at how this part of the land can be developed and are hopeful that we will have movement on that in the near future.” Following the news that the Sainsbury’s development is still set to proceed, supermarket giant Tesco are also hoping to build a store nearby. It is hoped that the store will be built by the end of the year on the Ebac factory site at St Helen Auckland, and will be one of the first eco stores in the region. I am looking forward to working with students from the local schools in the future.’ Aimee enjoyed the experience assisting staff at meal times, taking part in the resident’s reminiscence sessions, giving manicures, helping out in the laundry and assisting with other general care duties. Her week was enhanced thanks to 18 year-old Elizabeth Carrick, a Health & Social Care level 2 student from Bishop Auckland College, who acted as a mentor to Aimee during her time there. Jaqui commented “My father- in-law Albert was very happy with the care and treatment he got whilst at East Green. He said the staff could not do enough for him, even contacting him after he went back home to make sure he was ok. “The carers made visitors feel very welcome and able to come in at any time. It was this attitude and the happy atmosphere that encouraged me to ask the home to support Work Experience.” For further information about offering work experience placements to local schools, contact Jaqui Gardiner on 01325 3755963. Families in Woodhouse Close are invited to “The BIG picnic” Saturday, March 20th. Organised by Groundwork North East, Woodhouse Close Children’s Centre and Auckland Youth and Community Centre play workers, the morning will be devoted to activities and food-making for all the family.Starting at 10.00am at the Woodhouse Close Children’s Centre, Emma Kerr from Continyou, which runs ‘What’s Cooking Kids’ will be demonstrating how to make healthy packed lunches which will then be taken up to green space near Cheesmond Avenue where the picnic will take

place, with activities such as plant pot painting, story telling, art activities and a nature trail. The picnic is part of the Pride Project, which aims to encourage people to take pride in their local environment and be involved in their community. The project is financially supported by the Stronger Safer Communities Fund and Durham Constabulary’s Basic Command Unit Fund. Joanne Morley, Project Officer at Groundwork, said, ‘The activities organised are suitable for all the family and we hope parents, children and grandparents will come along and take part in some fun

activities and go home with a few ideas for their own family activities. “The area where the picnic is being held has been the focus of some improvements led by young people who planted daffodil bulbs in the autumn, and it is hoped visitors on Saturday will be filled with a sense of Spring at the sight of blooming daffodils.” The event will run until 1.00pm and children under eight must be accompanied by an adult. In the event of poor weather, the event will still go ahead, with all the activities being transferred to the Auckland Youth and Community Centre.

The village of Bolam, near West Auckland, is to be granted Conservation Area status.Durham County Council’s Cabinet recently approved a recommendation to designate the village as a conservation area. The move follows requests from residents to protect the area from future developments, such as proposed wind turbines, which may not be in keeping with the character of the area. It means that Bolam, a small rural village with a population of 63 people, requires future planning decisions to pay special attention to preserving or

enhancing the recognised character and appearance of the area. Future developments will also have to be sympathetic to landscape features, views and the village’s undeveloped areas, which contribute to the character or the appearance of the area and its settings. Councillor Neil Foster, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Economic Development, said, “Bolam is a medieval village which has special architectural and historic interest.“The designation of Conservation Area ensures that the special character of the area will be preserved for future generations to enjoy.”

GEAREd Up TO REdUCE BIKE ThEFT

Up to 2,500 bikes are set to be security marked in a bid to reduce bicycle theft.Durham Safe Partnership and Durham County Council are launching a ‘Pedal Safe’ initiative which will use Selectmark’s bike register system to deter cycle theft in the Teesdale and Wear Valley areas of the county. Each bike owner will be issued with a personal log book as proof of ownership and will be registered on a police approved national database. In addition to the bike marking kits, the partnership will also be fitting free bike lights

to improve the visibility of cyclists to other road users. Steve Arkley, Strategic Manager for Safer Communities with Durham County Council, said, "We have every confidence that the introduction of Pedal Safe in County Durham will help keep our cyclists safe by increasing their road sense, as well as having the added bonus of significantly reducing the problem of bike theft.” A session in Bishop Auckland will be taking place on Sunday, March 21st, in the Newgate Centre between 12 noon and 4.00pm.

Householders in the Wear Valley area are the latest residents to benefit from Durham County Council’s extension of its plastic recycling scheme. As part of the authority’s commitment to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, a number of recycling schemes are set to expand this year, and plastic is amongst them. From April 6th, people living in the former Wear Valley district will be able to add items like yoghurt pots, margarine tubs and empty milk cartons to the host of items they are able to

recycle. The Council’s Streetscene (South) Manager Jimmy Bennett, explained, “It’s really important to us that all residents, regardless of where in the county they live, enjoy the same services. “Expanding our plastic recycling in to this area will help us achieve our green targets, but it also gives residents a feel-good factor, knowing they are doing even more for their environment.” The additional items which residents in this area will be able to recycle include: - plastic bags, bubble wrap,

empty plastic bottles and containers, plastic film, ready meal trays and so on.From next month, residents in this area are asked to wash and squash all items and remove any bottle tops, these can all be placed in your ‘Green’ box along with your paper and cardboard. The council also ask that residents do not use black bags for extra recycling, but clear bags, showing the contents, are fine. All residents will be receiving a leaflet in the next few weeks explaining the service in more detail

Helping You AchieveYour Employment

GoalsThe Employment Team work with people who are looking to enter or return to work by offering information and guidance on a range of subjects including; accessing training, job searching, putting together a C.V. and interview techniques. They also work alongside other agencies to ensure that clients receive the best help and advice that is available.

The Employment Team is funded by One North East and Working Neighbourhood Fund and supported by Durham County Council. The Team have been supporting local people since October 2006 and are soon to start a regular outreach programme to widen the area of

support.

Feedback from clients who have already accessed the support is very positive, below is just a taste of the feedback received:

“The service has been a huge help to me and my family, I would have struggled in the first month of my employment without its help. Thank you very much.”

“I am very pleased with the service provided by the Team... I would not have managed to settle into my new job without the help I was given... Thank you.”

“The aid the team provided me proved to be an invaluable service, without which I would not have been able to cope with

the transmission into work, a big thank you to the Team who were extremely approachable and helpful.”

The outreach programme will initially be delivered through drop-in sessions in Crook, Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle, but they will be looking at increasing the cover of support to smaller, outlying areas in the near future. Don’t worry if you are not in one of the initial areas, you can contact the team on 01388 458181 and they can arrange to meet to discuss your needs at a more convenient location.

So if you are unsure about your future, call in at one of the sessions or ring for a chat... you never know, they just might help find the right employment path for you.

To arrange, or for more information, ring us on 01388 458181

A FLEA IN ThE EAR FOR FLY TIppERS

Fly tippers who dumped waste on the Woodhouse Close estate in Bishop Auckland have been tracked down and are being penalized for their actions. Two organisations have worked together to find the people responsible for the dumping and issued a fixed penalty notice for the offence. If the fixed penalty is not paid the tippers will end up in court. The tipping was first noticed in Cheesmond Avenue by a Dale & Valley Homes community caretaker, who reported it to the company’s tenancy enforcement team.Investigation soon revealed a trail of mud from a nearby house where the overgrown garden had been cleared.

Durham County Council and the Street Wardens were contacted to track down the culprits and begin enforcement action.Kath Wright, neighbourhood manager for Dale & Valley Homes, said, “We want our estates to be places where people are proud to live and we will take action against people who act illegally to spoil the environment for other people.“The council and the street wardens are in complete agreement with us about this. If anyone has any information about fly tipping on Woodhouse Close or any other of our estates they should contact the tenancy enforcement team on 0800 0830 333.”

If you have any issues affecting your quality of life and want to discuss it with your Neighbourhood Policing Team, then you should get involved in your local PACT meeting. This is an informal discussion with the police and local partners to resolve the issues where you live. For Cockton Hill, Henknowle & South Church areas, the next meeting is at Henknowle Community Centre on Wednesday, April 7th, at 6.00pm. The West Auckland, St.

Helens & Tindale meeting is at West Auckland Drop in Centre, Front Street, West Auckland, on Wednesday April 7th, at 7.00pm. The meeting for the Town Centre & Toronto is at the Four Clocks Centre, Newgate Street, on Tuesday, April 13th, at 6.30pm, and finally, for Woodhouse Close Estate, Greenfields & Etherley Dene the meeting is at Woodhouse Close Community Church, Proudfoot Drive, on Wednesday, April 14th, at 5.30pm.

Well known Bishop Auckland resident, Betty Brown of West Road, is overjoyed after a Town Councillor came to her rescue. Betty, 78, who finds walking difficult, bought herself an electric scooter to make herself more mobile. Imagine her disappointment, however, when she realised she couldn’t use her scooter because the kerb from her gate to the road was far too high. She rang Durham County Council in November and

Betty Brown, with Sam Zair, trying out her new dropped-kerb.

asked them for help to drop the kerb. They assured her that it would be sorted, but she heard nothing more. In despair, she contacted Councillor Sam Zair who put the wheels in motion, so to speak. He arranged for

the council to come out, but they said there was nothing left in the budget this year to pay for the work to be carried out. So Sam agreed to pay for the changes from his ‘Highways Budget’. Two weeks ago, the council

dropped the kerb, which came to around £500 and Betty is now a very happy lady. Betty is the lovely lady who worked for Manners the Butchers in Newgate Street for 45 years.

ST MARY’S YOUTh TEAMS UpdATE Bishop Auckland’ RUFC Under

14s were away to Chester le Street RUFC recently.Bishop pressurised the Chester backs, and from a scrum, Callum Howe forced his way through and off-loaded to Leon Kierl who planted it between the posts for Bishops first try. Luke Thompson converted .In true fashion Bishops showed fighting spirit with wave after wave of attacking on the Chester backs from James Scrivener and Chris Chapman. From a scrum just inside Chester half, Chapman surged forward, off loading to Kierl for another try.. A moment of lethargy and lack of concentration allowed Chester to regain possession and again outpace the Bishop backs to score under the posts.Bishops immediate response was from Kierl, who outpaced the Chester tackling and off loaded to Thompson for Bishops third try. For the rest of the half Chester were pinned in their own half by sustained Bishop pressure, with some good strong running from Logan Gray. After the break, Bishops were again caught

asleep, Chester scoring another try and conversion. Another period of lethargy and lack of concentration followed, until Howe broke through putting pressure on the Chester backs. From a line out there followed a moment of pure magic from Bishop. Joe Linder collected from the line out, fought off several tackles, off loaded to Kierl who rounded several Chester players, then off loaded to Thompson who stormed over the try line.Chester responded with immediate pressure and scored another virtually unopposed try down the Bishop wing. Bishops showed true grit and did not buckle under the Chester pressure. This was rewarded when Kierl intercepted a Chester pass, rounded several players and outpaced the Chester backs to score his third try, which was converted by Thompson. The final moments of this game saw Bishop pinned down under their posts from relentless Chester pressure.
