Projects in Borana
• 6 woredas in Borana zone & 3 field office: Yabello, Moyale & Dire
• Pastoralist Livelihood Initiative – p II• Regional Resilience Against Drought – P II• Global Water initiative • Emergency Interventions – based on need
These projects increased resilience to Shocks
Pastoral development challenges
– Repeated cycles of drought;– Increased population pressure;– Climatic variability and change;– Resource based conflicts & decreased morbidity;– Global food prices and globalization– Access to Basic Services;– Loss of livelihoods assets & agri. Encroachment– Rangeland/natural resource degradation, and– Inadequate investment in the dry lands.
CARE Pastoral Program
• NRM - integral part of our pastoral livelihood interventions (e.g. rangeland mgt)
• Strengthen customary rules – control, govern access & resource use (e.g. training & exchange visit)
• Preparedness & resilience to shocks (e.g. drought related interventions)
• Economic security & mutual support to women & girls saving groups, & cooperatives, through diversified engagement in pastoral economy
• Improve animal health (e.g. mass vaccination & training of CAHWs
