The Lord has promised to remove the proud from the midst of the church and leave only the humble ones therein. This is why He works in us to humble us, so that He may not have to remove us altogether. Many were humble when they first came into the church. At that time they realized that they deserved nothing but hell fire and were grateful that their sins were forgiven and that they could have a place in the church. September 2012

I am writing this note for the last time. I have stepped down from this responsibility from July 31, 2012. Praise God, I have peace and also much satisfaction from serving Him thus far and obeying His instructions to lay down my office at this juncture. I wish to share about the legacy that I am leaving behind for the leaders of MUT as they continue the ministry of care giving to the messengers of God.I do not consider the programmes that have been introduced in the last 18 years, the assets created in various kinds or even the people who are now in MUT for carrying out the ministry as the legacy, but only the God given mission and the values with which it has to be carried out. God has been very faithful in all these 18 years as I tried my best to follow these faithfully. The values and principles followed in MUT

1. Faith in God’s divine power to help MUT accomplish what He has begun (in carrying out the task and keeping God’s values).2. A second-mile service that requires hard work to the best of the abilities of each one in the team.3. Humility among the MUT team members (wanting to become one in understanding and sharing the burden of the weak and the struggling ones).4. God to be glorified always in each and every action of MUT and its people. The leadership team to strive to ensure this in life and ministry without becoming man pleasers.5. Giving to be ‘sacrificial, graceful and unconditional’.6. The ‘haves’ to take care of the ‘have nots’ and the blessed ones to bless their brethren.7. Caring for God’s workers is building

God’s kingdom and is equal to direct ministry.8. This care giving ministry to be carried out under the cover of regular and focused prayer.9. Everyone in the MUT ministry needs a proper grounding, proper exposure, understanding and experience, especially at the leadership level, with opportunities for further training.10. MUT belief statement: “God’s work done by God’s people in God’s way with God’s money will never lack God’s blessings.”11. God’s ways. Life and service always to be with reference to the Bible in deciding how to go about when doubts arise. (The Life Revision Seminar is very useful for the team to get proper understanding and discernment.)12. God’s work. Clarity in the mission to be accomplished needs to be ensured among all involved in the ministry, particularly among the leaders who make policies, to ensure proper fulfilment. (MUT aims at meeting some of the common unmet needs in the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual areas of missionaries and full time Christian workers who are involved in building God’s kingdom directly or indirectly so that they will stand as witness and be effective at all times. The efforts are taken jointly with missions and churches in India and outside the country.)13. God’s money. MUT needs to be careful not to resort to get / raise funds that are not from God or according to God’s ways. Ear-marked donations to be spent only for the purposes they are given. 14. Unconditional love / compassion / service (no rule is above God’s grace).15. All are equal in the MUT team. Spiritual authority to have equal standing with positional ones.16. Power and authority to be commanded only through servant leadership.17. Decision making not to be through majority vote; a unanimous agreement

is the goal in all policy making attempts.18. MUT not to be limited by any man made boundaries or divisions in the ministry (caste, colour, language, social or economic status).19. MUT believes in voluntary work and service.20. The status of volunteers and paid workers in MUT is the same. Payment of salary or remuneration not to create any difference in owning or shouldering responsibilities in MUT. When volunteers or paid workers err or fail to carry out responsibilities by ignorance or inability, others in the team may need to carry the extra load to manage the work. Failures or shortcomings in accomplishing tasks are to be treated with mercy and wisdom; proper documentation, education and understanding may help to overcome the deficiency in future. One strength of MUT is to be its empathy, understanding and upholding one another. Bible studies, group discussions, seminars and trainings are found helpful particularly to those who are spiritually immature or others who backslide at times.21. Remuneration is based only on needs. Otherwise it is equal. Adequate monetary support to shoulder responsibilities will be ensured.22. Accountability is expected in all areas and at all levels (personal life and in ministry).23. Transparency must be encouraged and ensured in all the areas of ministry.24. Holiness and integrity to be topmost priority to be demonstrated in life and in all activities. (MUT should strive to follow only Biblical understanding. Motives and intentions are to be carefully studied before implementing any changes.)25. MUT believes in partnership in building God’s kingdom and its mission. Wherever or whenever possible, it will share its resources or the ministry itself with other partners.

Please pray for me and Shanthi. We will be based in ODC and will be responsible for the activities in ODC as long as God keeps us here. - J. J. Ratnakumar

A bulletin from Missionary Upholders Trust

A healthy corrective to such an evil attitude is to give thanks for everything. The Bible clearly states “this is the will of God for us in Christ Jesus” (1 Thes 5:18). We must learn to give thanks for everyone in the body of Christ (Col 3:15). Develop the habit of giving thanks for your fellow believers in your local church. It is easy to be thankful for brethren who live in faraway lands whom we see only once in a while. But God tests our hearts by our attitude towards the ones whom we see every week in our local church. Our very best and closest fellowship should be with those in our local church and not with those from other lands and places. If you are proud and conceited you will find that you cannot appreciate your local fellow believers as much as those believers from other places. Thus you can evaluate your own heart’s condition. God is the one who has chosen the brothers and sisters in your local church. If you cannot love them and value them and live in glorious fellowship with them, you will be deceiving yourself if you think that you love God and are in fellowship with Him (1 John 4:20) God has appointed all things and all people for “our sakes” so that our “inner man may be renewed daily” increasingly into the likeness of Christ (2 Cor 4:15, 16) All things have been planned to “work together for our good” (Romans 8:28). So there is absolutely no room for complaints or murmuring or grumbling in the life of a true disciple of Jesus.

What is it to humble ourselves? The Bible tells us that God gives grace to the humble (Jas.4:6;1Pe.5:5). We are to humble ourselves in the presence of the Lord and under His mighty hand (Jas.4:10;1Pe.5:6). What does it mean to humble ourselves? We see from the above verses that humbling of ourselves is basically in relation to God. It is not putting up a humble front in front of people. We

can say that humility involves a sober estimate of ourselves before God. We must know who we are in relation to a perfect, loving, kind, merciful, compassionate, holy, almighty, all-knowing, all-wise God who has created us. We also must know how dependent we are on Him and on other people. Humbling of ourselves involves, therefore, taking our small place before God. Pride, which is the opposite of humility, is to think of ourselves as being more or greater than what we really are. When we are humble, even when we see that we are better than some others in some things, we know that it is God who made us that way (1Co.4:7), and also that there are other things where others are better than us. Humility makes us recognise our sins, sinfulness, human limitations, ignorance, weakness and helplessness without God. It means acknowledging when we have done wrong, both to God and to our fellow human beings. It means being careful not to go beyond what God has assigned to us or to intrude into other people’s lives (2Co.10:13). It means obeying God in everything He tells us (Php.2:8). It means being thankful for all that God has given to us, compared to what we really deserve for our sins (He.12:28). It means giving ourselves to God to serve Him and to glorify Him (Ro.12:1). - Jacob Ninan

In the life of Mother Teresa I see a lifetime of humility that is magnified in her poverty and service that never seemed to be rewarded during her life on earth.“If we were humble, nothing would change us–neither praise nor discouragement. If someone were to criticise us, we would not feel discouraged. If someone were to praise us, we also would not be proud.”“It is said that humility is truth. The path that will make us more like Jesus is the path of humility.”Recognising pride takes a day to day, even a minute by minute and maybe even a second by second discipline of practicing the presence of God, His grace, and His love. It means recognising I am nothing without Jesus. It is a constant attitude of gratitude that He saved me from myself and allowed me to be a part of His plan of redemption

The Most Humble ButtonA church realised the importance of humility, and so it formed a committee to find the most humble person in the church. Many names were submitted and numerous candidates evaluated. Finally the committee came to a unanimous decision. They selected a quiet little man who always lived in the background and had never taken credit for anything he had done. They awarded him the ‘Most Humble’ button for his faithful service. However, the next day they had to take it away from him because he pinned it on! The one thing about humility is, “If you think you have it, you don’t.”

Two BrothersTwo brothers worked together on the family farm. One was married and had a large family. The other was single. At the day’s end, the brothers shared everything equally, produce and profit. Then one day the single brother said to himself, “It’s not right that we should share equally the produce and the profit. I’m alone and my needs are simple.” So each night he took a sack of grain from his bin and crept across the field between their houses, dumping it into his brother’s bin.Meanwhile, the married brother said to himself, “Its not right that we should share the produce and the profit equally. After all, I’m married and I have my wife and my children to look after me in years to come. My brother has no one, and no one to take care of his future.” So each night, he took a sack of grain and dumped it into his single brother’s bin. Both men were puzzled for years because their supply of grain never dwindled. Then one dark night the two brothers bumped into each other.Slowly it dawned on them what was happening. They dropped their sacks and embraced one another. -Unknown

GIVING I have written a number of articles on giving. But I feel ‘giving’ has lot more depth; and I think the more I am able to understand the extent of God’s giving to me and have personally experienced it the more I will be able to know what giving is. The death of my Lord Jesus and that of ‘my old self ’ along with Him on the cross should become real in my life, and then alone I will know what giving is. (Just the intellectual understanding that ‘Jesus died for human beings to redeem them from their sins’ is not enough.)Whenever I do vision casting, I explain about the importance of taking membership in IMPACT/SMILE, LYB and GS schemes, not with an intention to get back something from these schemes but with the sole intention of enabling more people to give to fellow workers in His vineyard who are in distress and in need. I urge them to give this amount even from their tithes if they do not have extra money to spare as I feel it would be approved by God as the intention is giving to God and to God’s people. This year an occasion came for giving in MUT; it was for a colleague’s medical treatment. When the appeal for raising funds to meet his angioplasty expenses was given out, I could see a good response. I was happy that all the members of the MUT team understood that it was their responsibility to come to the rescue of a fellow worker, instead of saying that it was the responsibility of the organisation to meet such expenses.I feel there is need for a strong teaching to Christians on giving. One of the core values in MUT is giving and that too giving sacrificially, feeling the pinch, unconditionally (one-way without any demands or expectations) and graciously (godly giving).I have realised one more thing. It is relatively easy to give a tithe when ones income is low (of course managing one’s life with the balance meagre amount left may be difficult after giving the tithe)! People find it very difficult to give tithes when the income increases even though managing the life with the

balance amount will not be tough if one can control one’s lifestyle. Why? Either we get complacent, or people talk so high about our giving, which is always a bigger amount than what other gives, and we are unable to maintain the same ‘spirit of giving’ as when our income was low! Recently I met a person, a Friend of MUT who has started managing with 10% of the income and giving the rest to God and others. Unbelievable, yet it is true. The more we give, the more one can have the assurance that he or she has understood what God has given to them, and the gratefulness gets expressed by giving. I strongly believe that one major expression of love for Jesus in the life of a Christian is ‘giving’. - JJR

The Christmas gift A friend of mine named Paul received an automobile from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it. “Is this your car, Mister?” he asked.Paul nodded. “My brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was astounded. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you nothing? Boy, I wish…” He hesitated.Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the lad said jarred Paul all the way down to his heels.“I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.”Paul looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added, “Would you like to take a ride in my automobile?”“Oh yes, I’d love that.”After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes aglow, said, “Mister, would you mind driving in front on my house?”Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Paul was wrong

again. “Will you stop where those two steps are?” the boy asked. He ran up the steps. Then in a little while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed to the car.“There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day I’m gonna give you one just like it… then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Christmas windows that I’ve been trying to tell you about.”Paul got out and lifted the lad to the front seat of his car. The shingled-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began a memorable holiday ride. That Christmas Eve, Paul learned what Jesus meant when he had said, “It’s more blessed to give….”

News & Events

The 6th MUT Mission ConsultationThe 6th MUT Mission Consultation kicked off on April 18 with 198 participants including 127 senior mission leaders of over 75 mission organisations from across the country at SAIACS CEO Centre, Bangalore. Leading the inaugural session Mr. S. D. Reuben, Chairman and CEO of RZIM India, spoke about the criticality and the future implications of the consultation. “Indian missions has a long way to go before it fulfils the mission mandate for which the strategies formulated would be critical.”Rev. C. A. Benjamin, Director, FEBA, led the morning devotion setting the appropriate tone for the rest of the day’s deliberations. Speaking on the theme ‘Generosity in missions’ he expounded on the member care master care model culled out from the Macedonian church. The General Secretary of India Missions Association, Rev. Susanta Patra, spoke on the theme “Reaching the remaining unreached in India” and the strategies for reaching the same. He provided a macro picture about mission trends in India and the entailing challenges. “We need to look at the big picture regarding the heart of God, the condition of man and the urgency for reaching out even as the population grows exponentially.”In the plenary session, Dr. Kelly O’Donnell, consulting psychologist and CEO, Member Care Associates Inc., spoke about developing resilience and relevance for Christian workers. Taking the cue from the life of the apostle Paul he spoke about how Paul gave and received member care. He dwelt at length on Proverb 27:23-24, “Know well the condition of your flocks and

give careful attention to your herds; for riches do not endure forever and a crown is not secure for all generations.”Day 2 of the Consultation began with the morning devotion by Rev. Gavin Cunningham, Senior Pastor of the First AG Church, Bangalore. Focusing on the topic, “What is this master care giver model?” he began with the plea that leaders need to understand discipleship within the larger paradigm of shepherding. “You cannot talk about discipleship without talking about God shepherding His people. Otherwise discipleship would be just a narrow form of intellectual quest within the teaching and preaching framework,” he observed.“The truth about the Trinity is the foundation for a discipling ministry,” said Rev. Dr. Richard Howell, General Secretary of the Evangelical Fellowship of India, at the day’s plenary session. He was expounding the theme, “Task of building witnessing churches all over the country, present status and strategies for the future.”Dr. Kelly O’Donnell continued his presentations on developing resilience and relevance. Resiliency is the ability to face the reality and challenges of life and to grow with them. His wife Dr. Michele O’Donnell said there was a price to pay when working for long durations in extreme situations, speaking about compassion fatigue and chronic fatigue altering our worldview. The third day of the consultation

started with a time of ‘singspiration’, worship and Scripture devotion. Rev. Arun Andrews of RZIM challenged the participants to have a fresh perspective of the lost generation, especially the youth who are driven by different spirits, passions and pleasures of life. Based on Luke 8: 26-39 he portrayed a person driven by demons in the context of wholesome care-giving.The panel discussion among Rev. John Wesley, Rev. Kulothungan, Mr. Rajesh Duthie and Mr. Jose Thomas was ably moderated by Rev. C. A. Benjamin. The implications of the findings from the four interest groups which met on Day 1, namely spiritual growth, missionary children, health and finances were discussed at length. Several practical suggestions were offered to find solutions to some of the problems outlined. The Mission Consultation ended with thanksgiving and communion service.Feedback from the participants:

ONE DOWN AND STILL FIGHTING“Prepare for the worst, expect the best and take what comes”- Robert Speer MUT organised yet another successful healing and enrichment seminar for bereaved missionaries and their children at ODC from 4-6 May, 2012. The seminar saw a turnout of 21 women and 40 children. Some of these women had already been a part of previous seminars held in 2010 and 2011. Notable resource persons contributed their time to be a blessing to these people. Mr. Rampert and Mrs. Meghala led the singing/worship sessions. Mrs. Beulah Newton handled sessions on three topics, accepting the will of God, handling your emotions and commitment. Mrs. Selina Mohandas undertook two topics on finding sufficiency in God and creating a support system. The purpose of this gathering was to encourage, comfort and help the participants form long lasting friendships that would go beyond the retreat. The kids were divided into two groups according to their age. The smaller kids were kept occupied with games, stories and songs by Mrs. Hannah Alex and a small team. The idea was to help kids who were traumatised by the loss of a parent, discouraged, or rebelling against situations in the family. On the second night, every woman was entitled to a brief time of sharing during the campfire session. All the organisers and resource people were thoroughly encouraged by the positive response they got from the women and children. The women were also encouraged to meet the resource people for counselling and advice during their free time. One of the women mentioned how her life changed from being kadaval kaprom kanavan to living for Jesus after He healed her internal wounds and gave her a hope. By the end of the seminar, all the women had made commitments to go back to their respective mission fields with a zeal to do great things for God. Many a times, we as Christians often forget that circumstances and situations around us cannot determine who we are in Christ or condone the fact that we

once in a year or 2 years. Awarding and recognising implementation of member care policies, compiling best practices. CEOs are motivated to speak whereas second line leaders are hesitating to bring out their views.Suggestions made from the survey resultsSpiritualCreate a pastoral and member care team in every mission. Budget for spiritual development--CDs, books, training. Regular spiritual audit and accountability. Regional language based enrichment programmes. Inculcate prayer disciplines. Mission leaders to be role models.FinancePrint basic minimum financial guidelines to facilitate transparency. MUT’s comprehensive welfare schemes to become mandatory.Children Missionary children who are working now can be encouraged as volunteers to help out other missionary children through MUT by receiving database from missions. Organising camp for mission children cutting across all missions. Send questionnaire to all the missionary children to understand their struggles.GeneralMember missions to depute senior level staff families to take care of administrative functions at the MUT’s headquarters on a definite period basis. The steering committee reviewed the progress of the consultation on May 25, 2012 and also the consolidated finance statement. A balance of Rs. 3 lakhs was given to MUT of which Rs. 1 lakh was earmarked for the member care book and Rs. 2 lakhs for the Gandhinager building project. The steering committee will continue to meet and discuss the various possibilities of involvement in the ministry of MUT.

AASS staff and children at MUTThe staff and children of Anugraha Aradhana Sewakai Sanstha, Nagpur, travelled to Oddanchatram for a staff exposure and retreat during June 21-25, 2012. All the staff and children enjoyed and were blessed by the training, master health check up, and a trip to Kodaikanal. The arrangements for accommodation, food, travel were made by MUT.We reached the MUT retreat centre at Oddamchatram on the 21st and we were given a warm welcome by MUT. Training for the staff and the children started on the same day. Rev. Devdass taught from the word of God on encouragement and victory over sorrow. He said that we ourselves brought discouragement on ourselves by judging others and we needed to look continuously to the Lord.In the second session Sister Rebecca from Chennai taught the staff on ‘My identity in Christ,’ ‘Team work’, ‘Worship and quiet time’. Her teaching was very effective and touching for many staff members. She made them all to write the names of the people whom they had not forgiven. Then after forgiving each one of them she made them to burn the piece of paper with the names. The third session was taught by Dr. Alex who had been working among the Bondo tribes in Orissa for the last eighteen years. His ministry and commitment was a challenge to all the staff. He taught on ‘My relationship with God’ and ‘Father’s love’. Especially when he gave a love letter from God the Father to all the staff they were very touched to see how their Heavenly Father loved them. The staff responded to the love of God the father by deciding to personally follow Him.Mr. Ratnakumar taught all the staff on ‘trust’ through an interesting game which made all the staff to realise how important it was to trust each other without doubt, hesitation and fear while working as a team. He challenged the staff by pointing out that without trusting others and God we could not work together fruitfully in the kingdom of God.

GIFT OF MUT MUMBAI REST HOUSEThis is how we received from God the gift of a rest house in Mumbai for MUT. During the visit of Bro. J. J. Ratnakumar in March, he shared his burden with a small group of Friends of MUT, to establish a rest house in Mumbai for the benefit of missionaries in the region. Already Bethany Hospital in Thane had graciously agreed to offer free medical treatment. So the group decided to set up this rest house nearer to hospital, in a rented place. A brother immediately volunteered to pay the rent for a year. Soon another brother agreed to rent his brand new 3 BHK apartment in Thane. After completing the formalities, the rest house was equipped to take guests. On August 15, the same was dedicated in the presence of missionaries from various organisations and friends of MUT from various churches. It is partially furnished now and still needs many items. It also needs a good care taker immediately to operate and maintain the facility. Please praise God for this wonderful gift and pray for continued grace to meet the above needs.

All member missions may please inform their grass root workers serving in and around Maharashtra about this facility. The purpose of setting the rest house

(for rest and recuperation, for quality vacation with family and for master health check up and medical treatment) will be fully accomplished soon.
