  • What is it that comes to mind when you think about autumn? Fresh apple cider? Colorful leaves? Fall festivals? Football? If youre like me, its all of the above. In this issue of CardMaker, youll find cards that reflect the wonderful colors and motifs that best represent fall.

For you sports fans, or friends of die-hard sports enthu-siasts, we have a collection of greeting cards that are perfect to share with your favorite student athlete, coach or fan. Having been a cheerleading coach for a few years and mother to four cheerleaders, I had

to get in on the fun and make a card to include. Although some may dispute that cheerleading qualifies as a sport, it does in my world. So, while my design is on the simple side, I hope you enjoy it.

In this issue, youll also find creative designs that use adhesives in unique ways, cards created with cute little paper bags, and of course, this issue would not be complete without fun Halloween cards and treat holders. Im sure youll agree, the designers have really knocked these collections of cards right out of the park!

    Until next time,

    In this issue of CardMaker,

youll find cards that reflect the

wonderful colors and motifs that best

    represent fall.

Did you know that CardMaker is published by Annies, a family-owned company that dates back to 1925? We share your passion for creative expres-sion and your love of home and family.

    Spring 2013 Issue

I am a little disappointed that you decided to publish fewer issues per year. I know that they are larger, but I REALLY enjoy going to the mailbox and getting my issue more often. I like the digital copy, but really like the hands-on copy so I can mark pages and try the technique. I enjoyed reading about Anya Schrier in the spring issuemy sister met her in Pittsburgh, Pa., so it was special to see her picture and find out more about her. Keep up the excellent quality we all have grown to love about CardMaker magazine!

    Nita K.Monroe, NC

I love your magazine and read it from cover to cover as soon as the new one comes in. However I am a person that likes to learn new mediums for doing cards. I would like to see just one new medium in your magazine each month. Example: how to use alcohol inks, or how to use the brass templates. Thank You, for asking me what my thoughts were I appreciate it.

  • The idea behind Readers Reach Out is simple: You are invited to submit your handcrafted cards to various charitable organizations across the country. It is a wonderful opportunity to reach out and send greetings to people who need some cheer and good wishes.

Your Next Theme Is Operation Write HomeOperation Write Home (OWH) celebrated a huge milestone earlier this year

2 MILLION cards sent to deployed heroes overseas! The beautiful handmade cards help service members keep in touch with their loved ones at home at the rate of 1,500 cards a day, and were inviting you to help this cause. Their website has details about guidelines and requirements, and they have a very active blog where you can get inspiration and instruction, as well as hear feedback from service members.

Guidelines: OWH accepts only handmade cards, so do your very best work. Leave the inside blank for the service persons to include their own messages to family members. No glitter! Cards should be size A2 with enve-lopes. Please visit the website for more guidelines, pack-ing instructions and deadlines. While youre there, be sure to request a free OWH stamp for the backs of your cards too! http://operationwritehome.org.

Suggest an OrganizationWe would like this program to benefit people all across the country. If you know of an organization that would welcome handcrafted cards for those it serves, please send a note to us at [email protected]. Groups such as childrens hospitals, nursing homes, military groups and cancer treatment centers often welcome card donations.

Thank you for sharing your time and your handmade cards with others in need.

Paper Crafter CrayonsManufactured by Faber-CastellMaybe it reminds me of being a kid or maybe its because its relaxing, but coloring remains one of my favorite artistic activities. Its no wonder that I love Paper Crafter Crayons. These highly pigmented wax crayons can be used on multiple surfaces such as cardstock, chipboard, wood, glass and ceramic. Housed in a twist-up barrel, the crayons can be sharpened just like a pencil. They are waterproof, permanent and acid-free. Besides basic coloring, they can be used as a resist medium, and they can also be melted by rubbing the crayon across a hot mini iron and swiping it across glossy cardstock. Youll love discovering the endless design tricks you can accomplish with these!

  • Join us as we sit down and visit with designer Michelle Woerner.

    Michelle Woerner B y Br o ok e Sm it h

As a mother of two sons, Michelle Woerner lives in a home surrounded by all things boy. She uses her creative talents as an opportunity to indulge her feminine side; you will often see girly embellishments such as flowers, ribbons and gems adorning her pretty cards.

Since accidentally discovering card making in 2006, Michelle has grown her talent to become a sought-after designer. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including CardMaker, and she has been a member of several design teams. Michelle is also a past member of the CardMaker blog team.

Were excited to sit down with her to discover more about her creative life, including her love for thank you cards, die templates and zombies!

Please tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started designing.

I discovered card making completely by accident. I answered an ad off Craigslist to buy some scrapbook paper, and when I went to pick it up, I saw some handmade Christmas cards. This was a novel idea to me. I never knew people made their own cards! I chuckle at that now.

I went home and looked up Christmas stamps on eBay and found a seller with an auction who had links to Splitcoast Stampers, and I discovered the world of card making. I was hooked!

That was in 2006, and things have been full steam ahead ever since. Being surrounded by boys and their Legos, Star Wars and Pokmon all day, its great to escape into the world of pinks, ribbons, flowers and all things pretty whenever I want.

What paper-crafting products are you never without? There are a few that I use on just about everything I make, which are

patterned paper, ribbon and rhinestones. I usually pick the paper first and coordinate the ribbon and rhinestones to match.

What is your favorite type of card to make? My favorite is thank you cards. I think that with the popularity of Facebook

and email, sending a thank you card is dangerously close to becoming extinct. I love making cards and sending them out to say thank you for things big and small.

What is one crafting tool you are always reaching for? That would be my die templates. You can find dies in every shape and size,

including trendy basic shapes and dies that match stamp sets. I think I use a die on every single thing I make!

What is one of your favorite card-making techniques?I dont consider myself a technique type of card maker. I tend to be pretty

straightforward with my designs. Occasionally I will heat emboss, and I love the effect and look it has.

What are some of your favorite things to do besides paper crafting?

I am a total science fiction buff! I love all the sci-fi movies and TV shows. It is nice to relax on the couch at the end of the day with my husband and escape in some good, old-fashioned, alien/space travel/zombie/magic/dragon fun!

Do you have a favorite card-making tip to pass along to our readers?

My tip is to invest in stamps that appeal to you, which can be used for everyday occasions like birth-day, thank you, baby and so forth. You will get a great return for your money from these stamps.

  • Tall Fall AlphabetL e t t er i n g b y Na nc y B u rk e

This alphabet looks best when drawn very straight. Be sure to use a ruler for best results. Lightly draw your base guideline where you would like the bottom of each letter to sit. These letters are approximately 34 times as tall as they are wide. Adjust measurements to determine the height of each letter, and lightly draw a top guideline as well.

    1. Using a pencil and ruler to keep lines straight, lightly draw each letter. The location of the horizontal crossbars in each letter can vary from top to bottom of the letter, so be creative and place them where they look best. Space letters about 1/4 inch apart.

    2. Using your pencil, lightly draw small boxes at the ends and intersections of each letter line. Use completed alphabet as your placement guide.

    3. Go back over your letters with a black pen, drawing boxes first and then letter lines. Be sure to avoid drawing inside the boxes with the black pen. Erase any visible pencil lines and fill in boxes with colored pencils or markers.

Usually when you sit down to make a card or project of any kind, you start with a theme in mind, such as birthday. OK, great. You know you need to create a birthday card, but what do you do next? How do you pick the products you want to use? How do you select the color scheme?

One question often asked by beginning card makers or those who feel they are in a rut is, How do you select the papers and embellishments you are going to use for each project? One fun thing about paper crafting, or any hobby for that matter, is that we all have our own unique method to being creative. In this article, I will share a little about my creative work flow and how I approach designing projects.

Hello Card There are certain things you need to consider before

you start on any project. I usually begin by determining the theme of the card I need to create. For this exercise, lets use a birthday theme since many of us make lots of those types of cards. The next thing to consider is who the recipient will be. Am I making a card for an older friend or a young, trendy teen? Another key factor to think about is whether the card will be for a male or female. These questions will help guide you to the styles of products you may want to consider using for your project. For instance, I wouldnt pull out my pretty floral papers or detailed flower embellishments for a Fathers Day card (even

  • though I really like those flowers!). Instead, Id be considering woodgrain papers or perhaps sports-theme embellishments that would fit the personality or interests of the person receiving the card.

Next on the list of considerations is the selection of the papers and embellishments. Lets say were making a general thinking-of-you card for someone who loves all the hottest trends. The first thing I start with is a piece of paper that has a design with multiple colors, such as a chevron patterned paper.

Next, I pull papers that coordinate with the colors in the chevron design. Look at each piece individually, keying in on the color and the pattern more than who makes the paper. Here, teal gingham, hot pink with white medallions, and a subtle yellow print are trendy patterns that match the chevron perfectly.

Selecting papers from different manufacturers will allow you a wider group of products to choose from. If you prefer, there is nothing wrong with grabbing a few papers from one specific collection where the manufacturer has coordinated colors and designs for you. The final papers that I select are one or two sheets of solid-color cardstock that coordinate with my patterned papers. For this card, I debated between a subtle yellow and a bold teal. The teal is what I ended up using, but either would have been great with this card.

Selecting embellishments is similar to selecting your accessories when you get dressed. Sometimes you want a little color to contrast and pop against your outfit, and other times you choose classic earrings or an understated necklace that is your go-to piece of jewelry. Its the same with card making.

For this trendy-style card, I selected items that are punched up with color and a few pieces that are new and cool embellishments. I used enamel dots and wood ve-neer pieces along with a photo frame die cut wrapped in a bright orange chevron ribbon. All of these items are in the same hues of the chevron patterned paper. The wood pieces add a bit of understated color to help ground the pops of color.

Thanks So Much CardNext, lets tackle a thank you card that could be for your

mom or sweet neighbor. You know that these women in your life enjoy a softer color palette and classic style. For this card, I began with a feminine-looking paper with a cross-stitchin-spired rose motif. This paper collection includes many great coordinating products, so I chose some 3-D stickers and die-cut sentiment tags to use. I also selected a paper doily, mini pearls, heart and pearl stickpins and a few beautiful ribbons.

Finally, I selected pink and a light blue cardstock for possible card bases. In the end, I used pink cardstock under the main patterned paper that I started with to select all my other products. This happens often for me. When I start layering different papers and embellishments on my card, I tend to edit out some of the items so the final design doesnt overwhelm the message and the focus of the card.

Happy Birthday Card Finally, lets talk about making cards for the boys and men

in our lives. Guys dont typically appreciate overly ornate cards, so I like to start with neutral colors and natural

One fun thing about paper crafting is that we all have our own unique method to

    being creative.

materials for my masculine cards. Kraft card bases and accessories are very versatile and ideal to use on cards for men. I like to have wooden buttons and metal clips on hand to use as embellishments, along with jute and twill to use as my trims instead of pretty crochet laces and satin ribbons. These items are great for any masculine card, whether it be a birthday or Fathers Day card, and coordinate with all colors and patterns you select.

I also selected a few patterned papers for my mas-culine card, including a green plaid with a pop of teal, a green and black patterned paper, and finally, a nice neutral wooden ruler paper. Another good print to use would be newspaper or book-print patterns. From the green plaid paper, I used the pop of teal to select the alphabet stickers. Finally, I pulled sheets of kraft and green cardstock for my card bases. Either of these would be perfect for this card and would help to enhance the overall design with a bit of color. Even though I used a lot of neutrals, the card still has color and showcases the birthday theme well.

Filling the negative space of a die cut with glitter is a great finish to any card design. Use a

semi-transparent glitter to allow your background paper color to show through and create a

    perfect match every time!

Keep some empty sheets of foam squares to use for transferring foam squares so they can be isolated for specific

techniques such as the glitter technique used on this card. It keeps the full sheets

CORNERThe place where card-making fun, creative ideas and new friends are waiting to be discovered!

    B y L or a Br i n k m a n

Hello, crafty friends. I do hope you have enjoyed a summer full of memories in the making. Carving out some crafting time does become a little difficult during the busy summer months, but I hope youre able to set aside some time for yourself as summer winds down and we look forward to autumn.

Id love to see what you create in response to the challenges in this issue. Please share them with us on the CardMaker Facebook page.

Challenge 1 7/23/13On My HonorRemember the old saying Youre only as good as your word? I have been a Girl Scout leader for three years now. As many volunteers have discovered, sometimes volunteer work is where our passions lie, and that becomes a big part of who we are. On my honor, I promised these girls that I would be there for them and try my best to make them a priority. Create a card this week that showcases a relation-ship that you have promised, on your honor, to always make a priority. Whator whois most important to you?
