Welcome to the 11th Annual FACTS-Care “TeamBuilding” Conference, “CVT Critical Care 2014”!
The field of CVT critical care continues to be challenged by the increased acuity of patients, and the complexity of the procedures and supportive technology involved in their care.
The annual FACTS-Care CME conference is based on the concept that “CVT Critical Care” is a multi-disciplinaryspecialty that continues to evolve, and that optimal care of the CVT patient depends on coordination of a multi-disciplinary team. The FACTS-Care meetings areconstructed to be “team-building” events!
The FACTS-Care conferences provide the latest concepts and protocols to update current leaders of CVT ICU’s, and to develop new leaders for their units. Increasing quality of care and safety are ongoing challenges for all medical centers.
In order to provide the optimal educational experience, the annual conferences feature multi-disciplinary leaders who bring their expertise to presentations, panel discussions, and workshops. In addition, patients’ perspectives and concerns arehighlighted in a panel presentation by The Mended Hearts.
The Exhibit Hall with the new “State of the Art CVT ICU” and the non-CME Focus Groups provide important information for CVT critical care leaders about specific technology and pharmaceutical advances.
To encourage research and communication among “CVT critical care teams”around the world, the meeting now features two “Abstract-Based Scientific Sessions,” a Poster Session event, the annual Andrew Foster Young Investigator presentation, and, created this year, the John W. Kirklin Resident & Fellow Research Award.
Through his surgical innovations, mentorship, research, and publications, Dr. Kirklin had a profound influence on cardiothoracic surgeons and their critical carecolleagues around the world. Dr. Kirklin was the 1978-1979 President of the AATS.
Dr. Kirklin’s vision and implementation of the multi-disciplinary critical care team has become recognized as the optimal approach to cardiothoracic critical care. Since its inception, FACTS-Care has embodied his vision in its mission to provide the latestconcepts and protocols to multi-disciplinary professionals. Among his manycontributions to the critical care of cardiac surgical patients, Dr. Kirklin, along withhis colleague Dr. Eugene Blackstone, described the fundamental concepts regarding the postoperative management of low cardiac output.
We look forward to your joining us at the 11-Year Anniversary FACTS-Care CMEconference, “CVT Critical Care 2014”!

This 11th annual multi-disciplinary CME conference is dedicated to further advancing knowledge and expertise in the complex field of Cardiovascular-Thoracic (CVT) Critical Care. It is designed to bring together the entire team of health care professionals that provide care for patients undergoing CVT operations and interventional procedures.
The conference addresses the unique physiology, operations, procedures, andpotential complications of CVT patients. Latest management strategies for challenging clinical problems will be presented and current controversies discussed. Experts and world authorities will focus on the latest concepts, technology, management protocols, and clinical experience in their specialties.
The program includes faculty presentations, abstract-based scientific sessions, symposia regarding major issues, audience-panel discussions and workshops. Approaches and specific protocols will be related to clinical data, so that participants can structure their clinical practice on evidence-based medicine.
With the field of CVT critical care continuing to change rapidly, it is anticipated thatparticipation in the conference will lead to implementation of new concepts, protocols, and technology. The overall goal is to make the recovery of patients from CVT surgery and interventional procedures faster, safer, and more comfortable.
Educational Objectives:
The overall educational objectives of Cardiovascular-Thoracic (CVT) Critical Care 2014 are:
• Apply the latest concepts, technology and developments in CVT critical care to optimize patient outcomes.
• Understand the latest protocols to provide safe and effective cardiac and respiratory support.
• Recognize the importance of the multi-disciplinary team approach in CVT Critical Care and principles of team coordination.

Dr. Charles E. Murphy is Duke University Health System Associate ChiefPatient Safety Officer and Medical Director of Duke University Hospital Cardiothoracic ICU and Stepdown Units. He is a graduate of Duke University Medical School and the Duke General Surgery and Thoracic Surgeryresidencies.
Dr. Murphy was in practice for 17 years as a cardiovascular surgeon at Duke Regional Hospital, and during that time he held many physician leadership positions including Chair of the Department of Surgery and President ofthe Medical Staff. Dr. Murphy’s early patient safety leadership experience also began at Duke Regional Hospital where, in his role as Medical Director of the Medical-Surgical ICU, he helped implement a very successfulcomprehensive unit-based safety program.
In 2012, after completing formal training in Critical Care Medicine,Dr. Murphy became the Medical Director of the Cardiothoracic ICU andStepdown Units at Duke University Hospital. In this role, he leads the CTSurgery Subcommittee Heart Center Outcomes Program and other keypatient safety and quality initiatives. These include a multi-disciplinaryComprehensive Unit Safety Program and monthly Safety WalkRounds. He has also completed the Duke Patient Safety Leadership Trainingand Certification Course.
