Blood Pathway in the Heart
The HeartO Strongest organ in the body.O A hollow muscular organ, which is
composed of “chamber, rooms, and doors” which regulate blood flow and pressure throughout the heart and the system.
O Its main job is to pump blood throughout the body.
O Weighs approximately 250g. And is about the size of your fist.
O Beats 100,000 times in a day and roughly 2.5 billion times in a lifetime.
How the Heart WorksO The heart works as a pump, pumping
blood throughout our body through a network of blood vessels.
O The heart runs on a conduction system, which signals its contraction and what gives it its “Bum-Bum!”.
Aorta
• Largest blood vessel in body
• Supplies body with oxygenated blood
Arteries
• Carry oxygenated blood to body
• Blood vessels
Arterioles
• Smaller blood vessels
• Carry oxygenated blood
• Break off from arteries
Atrium
• The upper chambers in the heart
Blood
• Carry oxygen and nutrients throughout the
body• Pumped by the heart
Capillaries
• Smallest blood vessels
• Walls are only one cell thick
• Connect veins and arteries
Vein
• Blood vessels
• Carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart
Vena Cava
• Main vein in body
• Carries deoxygenated blood into the right
atrium
Ventricle
• The lower chamber of the heart
• Pumps blood to the rest of the body
Venules
• Connect arteries to veins to return blood to heart
