WHAT WE DOThe Cardiology Service evaluates all species of animals including, but not limited to, dogs, cats, horses, farm animals, and exotic animals for a spectrum of cardiac disorders. The most common heart diseases diagnosed include patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), pulmonic stenosis (PS), myxomatous mitral valve degeneration (MMVD), dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). We manage congestive heart failure (CHF) and cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial

fibrillation (AF) and ventricular tachycardia (VT) that are commonly associated with these heart diseases. In addition, an Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) screening test for cardiac congenital defects is offered through auscultation and cardiac ultrasound examination. We work closely with referring veterinarians to update our findings and recommendations for achieving the best patient care.

HOW WE DO ITThe Cardiology Service utilizes state-of-the-art equipment for diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, including:

• Digital radiography • Echocardiography (transthoracic and transesophageal) • Electrocardiography (ECG) • Doppler blood pressure • Digital Holter monitoring equipment • Computed Tomography with angiography • A fully equipped catheterization laboratory

with fluoroscopy • The catheterization laboratory is used for minimally

invasive cardiovascular procedures such as PDA occlusion, balloon valvuloplasty, pacemaker placement, transvenous electrical cardioversion of AF, surgical extraction of heartworms, and diagnostic angiography

WHO WE AREThe Cardiology Service is run by two faculty clinicians who are both board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in Cardiology. The service has one cardiology resident who is undergoing specialty training to become a cardiologist and one highly trained veterinary technician who assists the veterinarians and senior veterinary students. Members of our team are always available to help you and your pet, day and night.

APPOINTMENTSAppointments can be made by referral from your primary care veterinarian. At the time of referral they will be asked to provide copies of previous tests and reports. We also accept referrals directly from owners and we can reach out to your primary care veterinarian for background information. All referrals to the Wilford and Kate Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital require appointments. For more information on appointments, go online to www.vetmed.auburn.edu.
