Year 7 Christmas Dinner
On Wednesday 11th December, all of Year 7 celebrated the
end of their first term at Cardinal Newman by enjoying a
Christmas feast with their tutors.
Not only were students singing along to festive tunes, they
pulled crackers, shared jokes and even had a special visit
from Santa who presented chocolate treats for all!
A huge well done goes to the following tutor groups who
were rewarded with selection boxes for some excellent
achievements this term:
7RCY- the most positive points
7TGN – the highest attendance and the most ASPIRE points
7NSI – the second highest attendance
We hope students enjoyed their Christmas treats!
It was such a nice experience to share

Cardinal Newman Students Go Voting!
On Thursday 12th December when the rest of the country
were making important decisions about the future of our
country, students at Cardinal Newman were also having
their say.
Students had been presented with the manifestos of the
three parties running in school during tutor time in the run
up to the election which allowed them to think about the
party they felt would be best for their future. Students
watched election videos and discussed the election as a
talking point just prior to voting. The polling station was
very busy all day even with the poor weather conditions.
The Student Council lead by the Head Boy Oliver Kelly and
Head Girl Ellie Moorcroft and members of Year 12/13
manned the polling station all day and did an excellent job
ensuring that everyone moved through the polling booths
smoothly.
The school community were updated throughout the day on
the exit polls. A huge thank you to our three candidates
who took part Erin Purewal for Liberal Democrats, Rishil
Chauhan for the Conservative Party and Kieran Purewal for
the Labour Party.
The results were as follows:
Liberal Democratic 279
Labour Party 655
Conservative 226
Congratulations to Kieran on winning the election in school.
If you would like to see the manifestos for each of the
parties their election video is on our school
website.
Year 11 Rewards Trip
This term has been a very busy one for Year 11. Alongside
their normal lessons they have been attending intervention
sessions at tutor time and extra lessons after school with
various subject staff; they have also sat their first round if
mock papers this year.
To celebrate their hard work and dedication they were
rewarded with a trip to Coventry Skydome. Students were
given the choice of an Ice Skating session or going to the
cinema to watch Jumangi 2. Whichever activity they chose
students had a great time relaxing after their very busy term.
Staff were impressed with their conduct and behaviour and
also highly entertained by the ones that landed in the ice! It
was lovely to see how helpful and caring they were to each
other!
Thank you to the Year 11 Team that went with them and we
are looking forward to more hard work and adventure next
term.
Year 11 ‘A Christmas Carol’ Theatre Trip
On Tuesday 17th December, 100 Year 11 students went to
see a production of the Dickens classic ‘A Christmas Carol’ at
the Derby Theatre.
Students’ behaviour was exemplary as they represented the
school perfectly throughout the day.
The production itself was lively yet poignant, highlighting the
allegorical importance of giving to those in need.
Students were very quick to identify the key quotations from
the novella that were not included in the performance and
showed excellent understanding of their set text in their eval-
uations of the performance.
Thank you to all students and staff who attended the trip.
Sports News
Tuesday 3rd December 2019 -West
Midlands Cup vs Sandwell
Academy
Year 10 went in to this game in mixed opinions knowing
Sandwell Academy are a good side and arguably favourites
to win the competition. With one off the normal starting 11,
with Antonio being off absent the team had to be changed
around a little. From start to finish Newman were excellent
and out played Sandwell in every position going with some
big performances all round. Bradley Stretton started the
scoring off with an excellent knuckle ball free-kick that went
in to the top corner and added a second shortly after from
the penalty spot. Tom Campbell made it 3 shortly after.
Second half was a lot closer and with some big saves from
Zach Hedge and Brody who played in goal for a short stint
of the game, we came out 3-1 worthy winners moving on to
the quarter finals of the West Mids. Man of the Match went
to Musa Touray who could not be faulted and filled in at CM
for Anton.
Thursday 5th December 2019 - English
Schools Cup vs National Church of
England
This game turned out to be quite a tough one for the boys
knowing nothing about the opposition and in all fairness
made it very hard for themselves. The game was quite end
to end with no clear cut chances coming at either end under
some wet and windy conditions. Anton made a return for
this game and made a difference when he come on and it
was his corner that brought us the goal after Tom Campbell
hit a shot and it was turned in by a defender resulting in an
own goal. A win is a win and Year 10 are now through to
round 5 of the ESFA Cup. Well done! Man of the match
went to Brandon Williams.
Cardinal Newman 39 - 0 Westwood
Academy
Another win for our KS3 basketball team away at West-
wood Academy. The team were unstoppable and improve in
every game. Hollie Cox helped coach and with her assis-
tance we were also able to calculate our top scorers found
below:
Player of the match: Kyle Ojong
Highest Scorers:
David Odeh 16

The Boy in the Dress – Theatre Trip
On the 5th December, 150 students from Year 7 and Year 8
has the fantastic opportunity to watch a performance of ‘The
Boy in the Dress’ at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Strat-
ford. The musical was an adaptation of the bestselling novel by
acclaimed children’s author David Walliams and explored the
life of Denis, a twelve-year boy who enjoys both football and
cross-dressing. The text attempts to break down barriers of
gender stereotypes and had an inspiring message that it’s ok to
be yourself. The production itself was incredible; the cos-
tumes, lighting, set and music were all of the highest qualities
and the actors brought the audience to laughter and to tears
(teachers included). Overall, it was a fantastic experience and
a brilliant way to end the first term at Cardinal Newman.

We are holding a mock interview day for Year 11 on
Wednesday 8 January. Students have been supported in writ-

apprenticeship vacancies. They will each be interviewed by
one of over twenty local employers from a range of compa-
nies including: Mecalec, Primary Goal, DWP, Coventry Univer-
sity, Wilmott Dixon, Robertsons, Newman University and
ESFA. Interviews will be for approximately fifteen minutes be-
fore they receive some informal feedback to help them im-
prove for any future interviews.

Christmas Celebrations
On the 9th December, the Student Leadership Team invited
20 VIPs from our local Parish to come in for early Christmas celebrations. This consisted of celebrating with a Christmas
meal, listening to carols from the Year 7 and participating in a
Quiz, hosted by two year 13 students, Vic and Maddie.
During this celebration, we decided that we would embrace
our Irish roots this Christmas by watching a well-rehearsed
Irish Dance routine from Ella Murphy and Oliver Kelly.
Our afternoon ended by listening to a fantastic performance
from Sean Gallagher (playing the accordion) and Joe Bracken
(playing the tin whistle)
Carol Service
On Wednesday 18th December we held our annual Carol Service. It has now become our tradition for Year 7
students to lead this service during the season of advent. Our younger students performed some beautiful
carols whilst retelling the Christmas story through Drama, poetry and song. We were delighted to welcome over
500 parents, carers and visitors to help us celebrate the festive time of year.
Thank you to the students who took part in the service. A special thank you to Mrs Smith for coordinating all the
music and the choir. We would also like to thank Mrs Minshull and the Year 7 tutors were busy rehearsing all the
carols during the season of advent. Congratulations on a wonderful performance Year 7!
