With offices in Newport and Pontypool, the Cardiff office of Watkins & Gunn was opened in order to meet the demands of the firm’s ever growing client base, on the back of an extremely positive year which saw fee income grow by 20 per cent and client satisfaction levels reach an all time high of 98 per cent.

Managing Partner Clive Thomas said: “The firm has gone from strength to strength over the past few years despite the tough financial climate.

“We have worked extremely hard to create a culture of continuous improvement in the firm with our aim of constantly ‘exceeding our client’s expectations’. ur sight is one of our most valuable senses; it enables us to see the world. At Cardiff Eyecare their main priority

is to make sure that your eyesight is properly looked after and cared for – so that you don’t miss out on anything.

Cardiff Eyecare is owned and run by Sara and Robert Ward, a husband and wife team who established their first practice six years ago in Radyr. Both their practices have been started from scratch, and while Cardiff Eyecare has been open for less than a year it

is already growing into an important part of the city, with the needs of patient and quality eyecare at the heart of the business.

Cardiff Eyecare is currently the only independent, fully accredited opticians in the city centre; being

independent means that they have the flexibility to provide truly personal care. For example: they set aside more time for a sight test than high street chains usually do, which means that the test is a far less

stressful experience (and arguably results in a more accurate outcome). And if you do need spectacles or contact lenses, they have a small but highly experienced team who will help you choose the right frames, lenses and contact lenses for you,

your lifestyle and your budget, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. ‘We know that choosing glasses isn’t always easy’, says Sara, ‘so we

like to give all our clients all the time and help they need, to enable them to make informed choices.’’.

Sara herself is a qualified optometrist, which means that she is fully qualified to both examine your eyes and dispense spectacles and contact lenses. (She also specialises in contact lenses and is a member of the prestigious British Contact Lens Association.) Sight testing typically takes place on 3 or 4 days each week, but qualified and professional staff are always on hand to help with your spectacles and contact lenses, and answer any questions you may have. An important feature of both practices is that Sara and Robert believe that good eyecare doesn’t end when you have made your purchases – clients are always welcome in the practice, to have their spectacles adjusted or repaired, discuss their eyecare requirements or simply to browse.

They stock a wide range of frames across the two practices, from excellent value budget ranges (some of which are available free of charge to patients eligible for an NHS voucher), to great quality and cutting edge ‘designer’ brands such as Prada, Ted Baker, Superdry and Ray-Ban. They also have a wide range of sun and sports glasses including the world-famous Maui Jim, Adidas, Nautica and Gant, to make sure that your eyes are protected, you can see perfectly and you look great!

Cardiff Eyecare particularly stress the need for everyone over the age of 40 to have their eyes tested regularly, as at this point in your life there is a strong likelihood that you will begin to experience a condition called ‘presbyopia’. This is where the lens in your eye begins to lose its flexibility and it becomes increasingly difficult for you to change your focus from, say, looking in the distance to looking at objects close to. You can often tell this is happening as you begin to hold books or newspapers further away from you, but this is common visual problem which can easily be resolved by prescription glasses or even, surprising though it may seem, ‘multi-focal’ contact lenses.

It is important to remember that eye conditions do not just occur in older patients, but in children too. It is estimated that around 1 in 5 children have an undiagnosed eye condition. At Sara and Robert’s Radyr practice they have put great emphasis on setting time aside for children, as they believe this is so important – many eye conditions in children will get worse without treatment, but if detected early enough can be managed better or even cured. This is something that they are extending to the Cardiff practice as well. Children love to explore the world and Cardiff Eye Care has made it a priority to make sure they see it properly.

orthern Star Bespoke Jewellery are experts in designing and creating beautiful bespoke diamond jewellery. Selecting a diamond piece can be quite a daunting prospect if you have never bought one before. However, Northern

Star are able to guide you through the process from beginning to end. ‘”Firstly, we like to talk the Customer through the characteristics of a diamond, of which there are four; colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. Once Customers understand this it helps them choose their stone according to their budget”’. As the service is bespoke, the shop which has recently moved to Windsor Arcade will arrange for a selection of stones to be brought in for the client to choose from. ”We find that bringing in a selection of stones for a customer to view, really helps them to see the differences between a better quality stone, or a brighter diamond and helps them to make their final choice”.

With much emphasis on Fair Trading, Northern Star use reputable Diamond Specialists who can trace each stone

back to the mine it was sourced from. ‘”It is important to us to buy ethically sourced stones and we have recently developed a relationship with Ruby Fair, an ethical Gem Stone supplier who have their own mine in southern Tanzania.”’

The benefits of using a bespoke service mean that Customers are able to get exactly the piece of jewellery they had in mind. Using an up-to-date jewellery design programme, the CAD Matrix, enables the piece to be shown in a 3D format to the customer, before going ahead to being made.

Northern Star Bespoke Jewellery pride themselves on making exquisite jewellery at very reasonable prices ‘”The price of a bespoke piece of jewellery with us is usually in-line with what you would find for a piece directly from the high street, except you have a custom made piece which is exclusive to you”’.

Due to the nature of the business Northern Star do recommend booking an appointment so that an appropriate amount of time can be spent with each individual customer.

Sarah has been highly commended for her work in facial aesthetics and is fully qualified to see to all of your skin care needs. The Refresh Skin Studio provides personal consultations to ensure that you are completely comfortable and happy with any treatment you receive.

Although it is a new business, it is an extension of the already established and trusted Smile Studio, a dental practice that shares the same site. Now that’s really something to smile about.

ou’ll think you’ve seen it all until Antea Photography gives you a whole new perspective on the world around you.

Photographer Anthony Barber, using his 17m telescopic mast, elevates photography and uniquely captures a different point of view.

Anthony’s incredible bird’s eye shots soar above the rest, making them perfect for commercial advertising, the property sector, landscape designers or inspection purposes such as roofing or maintenance work. They can even be used for special occasions such as weddings and school pictures – there really are no limits.

Antea Photography provides aerial photography with a difference. Unlike the traditional methods there is no need to hire a helicopter, plane or even scaffolding, which minimises costs and the need to comply with restrictive Health and Safety issues. Above that, the use of the pneumatically controlled mast and remote controlled camera allows a higher level of clarity and greater control of the picture, giving you the best possible outcome.

As well as capturing the ideal snap shot Antea Photography also specialise in ongoing projects. Anthony is fully authorised to work with his equipment on construction sites, allowing him the unique opportunity to capture progress images as your development evolves from the ground up. Anthony

works closely with his clients to provide them with the best visual representation of their project. This type of work not only provides you with a stunning ‘after shot’ but also allows others to appreciate the work behind it. The wider visual exhibits the environment and community around the project, which adds a rare dynamic and perspective to the picture.

Anthony’s photography is not just limited to aerial work and can also encompass any bespoke photographic projects that clients may request. His non-commercial scenic photography, as well as his breathtaking 360 degree panoramas, are all available either at ground level or elevated.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding, (SUP) originated in Hawaii about 40 years ago as a way for surfing instructors to manage large groups of learner surfers. Lighter than a Kayak and easier to store, with no moving parts it is more simple than windsurfing, it is safe and does not require expensive lessons or special conditions such as kite-boarding, much cheaper than sailing.

In the UK we are seeing a fresh new explosion of this fun watersport. Whether it be surf, river or lake, it is a great way to introduce water-sports into your life and enjoy the nature around you .

Pura Vida Boardriders based in Penarth run a weekly SUP & Fitness group. Beginner lessons are held at Cosmeston Lakes on a Monday or Tuesday evening from 630pm. SUP-faris will launch later in the month by Penarth Pier and at Ogmore by Sea for the more advanced SUPers.

or Cleaning is a professional cleaning company with a team of highly trained professionals

who specialise in providing exceptional interior and exterior cleaning, including carpets, curtains, furnishings, ovens and now, rugs.

“Cleaning rugs is a specialised job,” says Cor Cleaning’s Graham Linnard. “To get the best results for delicate Chinese, Turkish and Persian silk or wool rugs you need the right equipment. We have invested in a special dip tank and have been through the necessary training to ensure we can do a good clean.”

If you have a rug that needs cleaning, the Cor team will come to your house and go through a thorough inspection before removing it for the cleaning process.

“We take photos and fill in a checklist of information so that any flaws or damage are noted before it goes into the rug spa,” says Graham. “It is hard to get a thorough clean with the rug in situ in the home, so we’re glad to be able to offer this special service to our customers.”

Sparkling ovensWhat’s your least favourite cleaning job? Chances are you’ll say cleaning the oven. Cor Cleaning will provide a professional domestic bio-degradable, non-caustic oven cleaning and valeting service which will leave your cooker in near showroom condition.

“We use specially built oven cleaning tanks which remove all traces of carbon from removable parts of the oven,” says Graham.

“Other cleaners claim to offer a bio-degradable, non-caustic service but still use caustic chemicals in their dip tanks. You can be assured that our service is 100% safe: no fumes, no odours and no harmful chemicals.

“We ensure our work is carried out with minimal disturbance and what’s more, our eco-friendly oven cleaning means your appliances and oven are completely safe to use as soon as we’ve finished,” says Graham.

Cor Cleaning carries out work for both the domestic and commercial markets and provide an expert and professional service. No job is too big or too small.

he Glamorganshire Golf Club was the second course to open in South Wales in 1890, when the Earl of Plymouth granted land to its founding members.

History was made again when a member devised his own scoring system in

1898; the ‘Stableford Scoring System’ invented on the Glamorganshire green, went on to be adopted all over the world.

This sense of heritage permeates the tranquillity of the clubs’ landscape; and overlooking the sea, it could be seen as where the rolling Vale countryside really begins. The Club’s Secretary/Manager, Brian Williams describes the great activity going on within the club’s peaceful atmosphere:

“Visitors come from all over Europe, the US and Japan. The Ryder Cup having boosted much interest in Welsh golf. Entrants for ‘Open Day’ golf competition draw golfers from all over South Wales, and around 280 members gather on the green to compete on a typical ‘Captain’s Day’.”

The ‘Baffie’ (the name of which stems from a pre-20th century type of wooden club) is a major competition, held this year on 23rd September, and is open to all ‘scratch golfers’.

The Summer Ball is another great occasion. “We have a lot of social events throughout the year, showcasing live bands and holding dinners.” The Club also manage to accommodate regular golfing days for local charities to generate funds.

The Club received a Junior Golf Accreditation in 2011 and is hosting the 2012 Welsh Schools Championship and the Welsh Boys Championships in 2013. In addition to nurturing youth-level golf, the 2014 Welsh Open Seniors is also being held here.

“Golf is a sport you can play all your life,” says Williams, citing team ethic and friendship as chief elements, which is possibly why so many retired sportsmen play at the Glamorganshire.

“Tuition is available from the professional attached to the Club and his assistant. They are based at the on-site shop where all major brands of equipment can be hired, and there is a special service centre for Powerkaddy golf trollies.”

The Club’s comprehensive website(www.glamorganshiregolfclub.co.uk) has excellent features for golf-players, and an interactive calendar displaying available tee-time and the many events taking place.

Society DaysPlay the second oldest course in South Wales - the ‘Birthplace of the Stableford Scoring System’.

Societies - minimum of 12 golfers per group

Society days are normally Thursdays and Fridays except Bank Holidays but small groups may be taken on other days when tee-times are available.

The Learning Partnership is delighted to offer our partner professionals the opportunity to hear Baroness Susan Greenfield speak at our 2012 Autumn Conference.

what effect are technologies such as computer games, the internet and social media having on learning and teaching?

The primary focus of Baroness Greenfield’s work explores and questions the impact of modern screen technologies on learning and teaching as well as the human brain. Today’s screen technologies create environments that could alter how we process information, the degree to which we take risks, how we socialise and empathise with others and even, how we view our own identity.Susan is fascinated as to how screen technologies such as computer games, the Internet and social media may be changing the human brain, both for good and bad. She will illustrate the potential of learning by exploring the effects of gaming, social media and interaction along with the difference between the under function and active function of the prefrontal cortex found in our brains.

esigned and built in late 2010, this Earl Modena Orangery makes a stunning addition to the family home. The client needed extra

living space, wanting a chill out area but versatile space which children could utilise as games room.

Space was limited to the rear of the property so a side extension was designed and planning permission was obtained.

The Orangery features four pane sliding patio doors leading to the rear garden, picture window overlooking front elevation and beautiful lantern roof, all in a mahogany finish to match the existing house.

Our clients were delighted with the new addition. They now use the space to entertain, relax and at one time even used it as a snooker room!

Dean who runs Vale Orangeries with wife Leanne explains “It’s great to re-visit our Orangeries and see how

they have made such a difference to our client’s day to day living, and it’s lovely to catch up too. It now seems like the Orangery was always here and part of the original build, and our client cannot imagine how they managed without it.”
