18 The marina is accessed through a tidal gate which opens about 2.5 hours either side of HW.

THE ESTUARYThe Burry inlet should be treated with caution in rough weather, at night or within 2 hours of HW. The sand shifts and charts should not be relied on. Approach via the south channel taking care in the area of the outer bar and Lynch bank and to avoid the West Hooper bank (north of the mid channel) and the Hooper bank (south of the mid channel) where big waves can develop in the shallower water. The shallow water extends from approximately N 51 38.05 W 004 19.10 to the northern shore.

THE APPROACH CHANNEL (300METRES OUTSIDE GATE)The approach is marked by 2 red and 3 green buoys (lit at night), but care must be taken after rough weather as these may have been dragged or lost. The line of the channel can move significantly, with part sometimes broadside to the waves and entered from the east. The depth is variable and often much shallower than the depth over the sill. If in doubt, approach near HW and not on the lowest of neap tides.

THE MARINAThe marina gate is controlled by lights (group of three vertical). 3 red or indeed any red showing means that the gate is up and should not be approached. Two greens vertically over a white indicate that the gate is down and two-way traffic is in operation. Boats leaving the marina should give way. The depth over the sill at the gate is at least 2.5metres but it is advisable to check with the marina office before entering.

Burry Port is marked by a lighthouse on the western protective breakwater (N 51 0.62 W 0004 15.05). Its characteristics are Fl 5s 6.5NM. There are two barrel posts in line marking extensions to the western breakwater, the outermost one of which is lit at night. Its characteristics are Fl R 5s 3NM. The red/green channel buoys are lit. The old cast iron lighthouse (N 51 39.15 W 004 15.07) at Whitford Point on the opposite side of the Estuary provides a good mark during daylight but is unlit.

APPROACHING ABERYSTWYTH MARINA

The approach should be treated with caution in strong onshore winds, beware of cross-tides and boulders around head of the South Pier, the Stone Pier, and the Trap (an area of rough ground) which is to the north of the Wooden Jetty. The Wooden Jetty is marked with Q WR 9m; Red Sector (141-175) which covers the Castle Rocks.

The south Pier F1.(2) WG 10s 12m 10m. There are four FR (vertical) on a radio tower 2.8 miles to the south. The entrance is narrow with a 90° port turn inside the Wooden Jetty head. The bar is immediately outside the head of the Stone Pier; at low water springs there is about 0.7 metres on the bar when on the leading line.

Boats drawing 2.0 meters are advised to enter up to 2.0 hours before and 2.5 hours after HW in calm conditions and boats drawing up to 1.0 meters can enter 3.0 hours before and 3.5 hours after HW.

The Harbour is located by Pendinas, a conspicuous hill 120m high, with the Wellington monument at its crest. The head of the north breakwater, the Wooden Jetty, on the Wellington monument leads 140°, which clears you south of the Castle Rocks.

APPROACHING PORT DINORWIC MARINA

MARINA APPROACHContact the dockmaster on Channel 80 before approaching. Both the Lock Basin and Tidal Pontoon Basin entrances dry but are accessible HW + / – 3 hours approx.

LOCK ENTRANCE APPROACHNo movements in Lock or Lock Basin without permission. To enter lock, from main channel, turn when entrance opens up and keep 10 metres from wall. All movement is controlled by the dock master.

TIDAL PONTOON BASINBerth Holders and short stay visitors only – Dries at springs. Strong cross tide at entrance. To enter turn when entrance opens up, beware of departing vessels.

APPROACH TO PORT DINORWIC MARINAFrom the North: The Britannia Bridge lies 2nm to the north of Port Dinorwic. To the south east of the bridge, on the opposite shore to Nelsons Statue is an Historic Wreck. Avoid this by keeping north of the channel until the Straits turn south. The Lock opens up to port 300m after the start of the residential development and below the Hotel Port Dinorwic. From the South: Provided due care is taken, the passage between Caernarfon and Port Dinorwic is danger free. The lock entrance opens up to starboard 300 mtrs before the end of the residential developments.

SAILING FROM PORT DINORWIC

Bound North from Port Dinorwic:The correct time to pass through the ‘Swellies’ is at HW or LW slack. This is -2 Hours Liverpool (-0052PD). However, due to the height and time between the ends of the Straits, passage north at this time means you effectively travel up hill, against the tide. By timing your arrival at Britannia Bridge ( 2nm from PD) – 3 hours before Liverpool (-0152PD)you will gain a favourable tide to Bangor, then a period of relative ‘slack’ until you gain a ‘new ebb’ toward Puffin Island and the northerly exit of the Straits

Bound South from Port Dinorwic:The tide flows with considerable strength along the full length of this end of the Straits. Provided due care is taken, the passage is danger free between Port Dinorwic & Caernarfon. ( Note buoyage change near Caernarfon). It is best to leave Port Dinorwic early as you will need to push against the last of the flood. The aim is to reach Fort Belan at the southern entrance (to the Straits (5.5.nm) at the top of the tide (-0025PD) This will allow passage over the Bar at maximum depth. Passage over the Bar at half tide is not recommended even in calm conditions.

BOOK HARD STORAGE

HARD STORAGE

We provide hard storage for yachts and motorboats at all our marina sites. Storage is available on both a long and short-term basis. For boat owners wishing to carry out routine maintenance we have electricity and water available. We also offer trailer storage and mast storage.

Ports, harbours, navigation channels and marinas are continually confronted with siltation, which reduces access. Maintenance dredging is a necessity for companies operating in these waterways to ensure safe navigation depths in these locations.

ANNUAL BERTH HOLDERS BENEFIT FROM 8 WEEKS

DREDGING SERVICES

As a marina operator, we have first-hand experience and an in-depth understanding of the requirements of maintenance dredging operations.
