Cardiff 7s Rugby and Netball festival aims to be the leading mass-participation sports festival in Wales. Providing an action-packed day of sport, music and entertainment in one of the UK’s sporting capitals, Cardiff 7s will be a festival with a difference.

1

Set for a Summer 2013 launch, Cardiff 7s will fuse fast-paced rugby sevens and netball with live music, food, drink and exceptional entertainment. It anticipates attracting around 50 sports teams from across the UK to Wales’s capital city, with 500 players alone taking part in the sports competitions. There will be a wide range of competitions on offer, ranging from elite level to social league (fancy dress optional!). As well as those participating in sports, the festival is expected to draw in excess of 1,500 spectators over the course of the day. Visitors will bask in the ambience of the festival, listen to a wide selection of live music, watch sport and visit the Trade Village to sample some of the finest food and drink Cardiff has to offer.

2

Cardiff 7s actively welcomes families to the festival. There will be numerous opportunities for children to try different sports and activities in the Kid’s Zone, as well as having the opportunity to meet some of the stars of the game. Cardiff 7s will serve to inspire the next generation of talented athletes.

The festival will be split into two areas (Sport and Festival). This will enable each area to be controlled and managed efficiently. The sale of alcohol will be contained in the festival area and Rumney Rugby Club. In addition, attendees will not be allowed to bring alcohol onto the site: this will allow bar staff to control the sale of alcohol and refuse anyone deemed too drunk. The festival arena and main food and drink tents will be positioned at the far end of the Riverside playing fields. This will reduce the level of noise pollution faced by local residents, and subsequently reduce the level of disturbance caused by the event. Additionally, the sound systems will be directed away from residential areas and will comply with noise regulations. There is adequate space for car parking at Llanrumney High School. This is a secure site and will be marshalled and controlled over the course of the day by an experienced team. Car parking will be charged at £5 per day.

The game is played on a full-sized pitch, with only seven players on each team. The game’s elusive runners have space to wreak havoc with side-steps, rapid running and killer lines. Points will be awarded in the following manner: two for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss. The Cardiff 7s Men’s Social and Ladies Open rugby tournaments will be structured around an eight-team format. The teams will be divided into two pools of four teams. Teams of all standards and backgrounds are invited to take part in three different tournaments within the event. In each tournament, 16 teams will be split into two groups of eight. The top three from each group at the end of the first day will then battle it out for a place in the final. Each game will be split into two eight-minute periods. Netball Tournaments 2013 Ladies Open, Ladies Social and Mixed Netball. Cups and medals will be awarded to winners and runners-up in all the tournaments.

Festival Given their respective significant to the youth culture of Wales, sport and music will go hand in hand at Cardiff 7s. We want the people who come to this festival to play as hard off the field as they do on it, and a diverse range of music will be playing throughout the day. In order to guarantee a first-class experience, the Cardiff 7s team has been brought together an impressive lineup of musical artists, including a combination of DJs and up-and-coming UK bands. DJs with their big party tunes and rocking bands will be the perfect soundtrack to a weekend of dancing and bizarre fancy dress. The main festival arena will stay open until 23:00, but the party won’t end there… Cardiff 7s has established a relationship with one of the biggest and most successful nightclubs in the city. This club will house the official post-festival after party, closing an unforgettable day.

Children and the ‘Kids Zone’

Cardiff 7s is in full support of the Welsh Government’s strategy to increase the number of children regularly participating in sport. The festival represents an opportunity to bring two popular sports in Cardiff together at one event. Collaboration and partnerships are at the heart of the success of Cardiff 7s, and these new relationships will result in increased sporting activity in the city throughout the year. Working with governing bodies, schools, sports clubs, community groups and charities will boost the profile of sport and encourage further participation. The festival is an effective means for these organisations to make contact with potential new members, as well as providing numerous opportunities for children to sample various sports and activities. Collectively, their combined energy and enthusiasm will deliver far more than a single organisation could achieve. The festival’s wide programme of events and taster sessions signify what sport can offer by highlighting the vast range of clubs and facilities in Cardiff.
