Purpose

ObjectivesThe main goal for the CarCapture mobile app is to facilitate the car selection process for potential car buyers that will result in an increase in walk-in traffic to a CarMax dealership. More specifically, car buyers should be able to use CarCapture to make an informed decision about their purchase of an automobile. CarMax’s objective is to sell automobiles to customers once they have decided on the car they want and test-drive it.

ScopeThe concept of CarCapture and its core functionality will be conveyed through the development of a high fidelity wireframe. The process that is involved in using CarCapture begins with a customer indicating a series of criteria based on her car preferences. The customer will be required to provide information for CarCapture, which will then recommend a limited set of car models and options based on the preferences. The customer will engage in activities that help to narrow down the recommendations of cars to one specific car. The end result is the display of a specific car that the customer can test drive at a nearby CarMax.

The profiles of the customers are represented through three main persona types, which are discussed in the following section. CarCapture aims to address the needs and goals of these persona types.

User PopulationOur target users are people who want to purchase a car from CarMax. We want to create a product that will enhance the experience of buying a car. We are keeping three different persona types in mind as we design this product:

Michelle wants a car that reflects her personality and lifestyle Vince wants a car that has the functions and features he wants Rodger wants a car with a specific brand

FeaturesCarCapture is an application that allows users to take a picture of any car that they like on the street with their mobile phones, and they will be able to find out the information of the car. CarCapture will implement Hi-Tech Solutions’ (HTS) vehicle identity recognition software. Therefore, when users submit a picture of a car, they will be able to see the brand name, make, model, and estimated price range of the car and save their searches into a wish list. In addition, users will also be able to locate their closest CarMax dealership and schedule test drive

appointments with a CarMax representative. CarCapture will also integrate with Facebook’s Graph API to provide its users with a visualization of their personal network’s brand interests.

Vehicle Identification TechnologyWe are planning to use the HTS vehicle recognition system to identify cars that our uses will photograph. The system has the capability to provide a comprehensive profile of the car, including its make, model, and body type. The HTS vehicle recognition system can also identify special plate icons such as those that contain handicap symbols.

Facebook IntegrationCarCapture will be implementing Facebook’s Graph API to get data in and out of the network’s social graph. The API that can be used to query data, post new stories, and create check-ins or any of the other tasks that an application may need to do. Facebook's Open Graph defines new objects and actions in a user's social graph, and the way that new instances of those actions and objects are created is via the Graph API. The Graph API is also the underlying mechanism that's used by Facebook's iOS, Android, PHP and JavaScript toolkits.

First time users of CarCapture can create a CarMax account with Facebook Login, which reduces the amount of information and time people need to put into an app before they are logged in and using it. It drops the barrier to entry for registration and turns it into a quick, easy process. Through Facebook Login, CarCapture does not need to store passwords or emails, reducing the risk of the app compromising data security. It remains consistent and instantly recognizable across every type of device, whether it's a feature phone, smartphone, tablet or computer.

CarCapture can also scrape data from Facebook API and aggregate information on the Facebook likes of all of the user’s friends. With the release of validated Facebook pages, CarCapture will cull car brand interests from the user’s circle of friends to rank and visualize the highest brand affinity among the user’s community. Results can also be saved as an image and shared through a Facebook status post to the user’s timeline. This will increase overall awareness for the CarCapture application among the user’s Facebook audience.

Constraints CarCapture has some constraints. First, the search database may be temporally limited to vehicles manufactured up to 2012. Secondly, the image clearness and accuracy can be another problem. What if the pictures users submitted are not in the database or too blurred to be recognize? In these cases, the technology is limited. CarCapture may need to actually additional support staff on hand look through submitted photos one by one and provide immediate feedback to its users.
