Meet the Carbon Team!In this issue, we take a moment to introduce ourselves to the community. If you happen to catch us covering events, say hello! We do this magazine for you! So don’t be shy!

I have always argued with my dad over what the difference was between a professional driver, and person who was an expert at driving. We still can’t come to a compromise. Some say I’m temperamental, but I call it being passionate. I’m passionate about a lot of things. Cars are pretty high on that list of “Stuff That Jasmine is Passionate About”, amidst other things like the Japanese culture, traveling, drifting, and

nail art (weird, I know).I’ve had an affinity towards cars my entire life and have owned such cars as a 350Z, an SR’d S13, and I am currently on my fourth Evo. My dream car is a Skyline R34. I like to put the blame on my husband Eric Hall for turning me onto drifting- I can’t get enough of it! But really, whether I’m going in a straight line, through pylons, or hitting clipping points, I just know one thing; I like to go fast.

I am Operations Director for Carbon, so I like to talk, and manage, and talk a lot. I spend time with my closest friends being around the things I love the most; cars. I really feel that we have something to offer that hasn’t been touched on before in Vegas. Look out for us, we’re in it for the long run!

Jasmine Tamimi - Operations Director - Writer

Originally from Long Beach, California, I can easily remember always being around cars at a very young age. With a Dad having a huge interest in muscle cars, “Father Daughter Time” often meant him pulling me away from my Super Nintendo, and learning how to wax and buff his ‘78 Camaro. Yes, I grew up being the girl who could carry a pretty decent

conversation about this car and that car. What brought me back into the scene was when my boyfriend, Lauder Corea, bought his 2014 Evo X. This inevitably lead me to meeting an amazing group of people that is now known as Team Carbon. Being Managing Editor for Carbon Magazine, I have nothing but high

expectations. With a team who all share a similar passion and background, I have no doubt that we can bring the deserved attention to the local car scene and put Las Vegas back on the map as a respected automotive community.

Lailani Albano - Managing Editor - Writer

I’m Lauder. I design, I take photos, I joke around a lot and have a great passion for cars. When I’m not shooting for Carbon or looking at car parts online… I work as a graphic designer, play a bit of music, and spend time with my lovely girlfriend. I have the great pleasure to work with some great friends on this thing we’re all

very passionate about. We put in a lot of time and effort into this magazine so I’m very happy to see and hear all the positive feedback we’ve received from it.I’m also the owner of Carbon’s project car, and I’m hoping to accomplish many things in my build this year so stay tuned to see where that goes. Until then, myself and my team will continue to

work very hard on this thing we call Carbon Automotive Lifestyle Magazine.

I’m Claudia. My background is actually in librarianship, so you can say that reading and teaching others about books, magazines and research is my life. I’ve had an interest in professional writing for a while now, so as an editor of Carbon Magazine, I help review and prepare a variety

of articles for the magazine. Writing for Carbon with my boyfriend Robert is fun. I never really noticed this world before I met him but being exposed to it now, I see how interesting it is and I think it’s cool.

Claudia Melton - Editor

I’m Robert Sheppard. Systems Administrator by day, car nut by night, and EDM aficionado when I can’t sleep. I’ve been into cars since I was a toddler. My mom loves to tell a story of how I named every car and truck I saw while on a family trip at an early age. My

favorite toy growing up was a Fisher Price pedal powered race car. I was devastated when I grew out of that thing!Fast forwarding to the present, I get my car fix by autocrossing my Evo, hanging out at car meets, or writing articles for Carbon

with my girlfriend Claudia. I enjoy writing for Carbon! It’s a good experience and I get to see a lot of different people and hear their stories. Everyone is unique and they each have their own reasons for why they love cars.

Robert Sheppard - Editor

Hello all you beautiful people. My name is Reginald Cunanan. I’ve had a passion about cars since I was a kid. Since then, it has been one of my goals and dreams to modify a car to my liking. I accomplished one of those dreams on December 10, 2010 as I drove off the dealership

lot with a brand new car that has given me nothing but smiles per gallons, A 2011 Mitsubishi Evo X. Because of this car, I have met some amazing people, which led to becoming great friends. I have accomplished numerous things since I began modifying my daily driven machine. It will

be never ending. I am always around cars whether it’s at car meets, at work, driving my own car, or on the internet looking at car parts. As the Brand Ambassador of Carbon Magazine, I’ll share with our experiences about the Las Vegas car scene.

Reginald Cunanan - Brand Ambassador - Nice Guy

Hi. I’m Eric and I’m a recovering car-aholic and if you’re reading this far, you must be too! I started back in 2001 with my ‘93 240sx. I can only count on one hand the amount of people who modified their 240’s back then. I’ve been drifting since then as a hobby and also winning 1st place in the Best-of-Vegas: Vegasdrift

competition in 2005. I’ve always felt drifting has become larger and larger every year and always reminisce of the good ole’ days.I hope to bring our readers a window into my world through my photography and the feeling captured within. Taking photos that relay a moment’s feeling is what I pride my work

on and I hope you, the reader, can see that.As Creative Director, I will convey that same feeling through my design and layouts with the help of my team. We here at Carbon Magazine would like to thank all of our readers that has made this possible. Thank you and be:CALM.

One Man’s Kryptonite

Troy McGregor’s daily routine begins and ends with his 2012 Fiat 500. “I

start my day off with breakfast and wiping my car down,” he says with a laugh, “and I end it with wiping my car down and having dinner.” Twelve hour days don’t stop Troy, a 36 year old Las Vegas resident, from working on his car. As a four-teen year professional custom-

izing cars and installing audio systems, Troy can’t help but to bring his eye for detail and drive for perfection to his Fiat.

Initially, Troy simply wanted a vehicle that could handle his 50 mile commute. “I was trying to find something small that had good gas mile-age.” After researching and test-driving other fuel-saving

cars, Troy looked into the Fiat based upon the recommendation of a friend. His search paid-off when he saw the Fiat in a Las Vegas show-room. The gas mileage, size and comfort of the car convinced Troy that this would be a great buy. Rather than purchasing his Fiat in Vegas, Troy made a one-day trip down to Orange County in January of 2012 after finding abetter deal.

Although Troy bought the Fiat for its fuel efficiency, he immediately started making modifications. Within the first few days, Troy replaced the car’s stereo and tinted the windows. Over the next two years, the Fiat changed even more. The most noticeable mod is the car’s paint job. In a 30 hour period, Troy and a painter tore down, prepped, painted and

re-assembled his Fiat in its signature color, PPG Lime Green. Along with the new paint job, Troy installed a set of Nutek Forged 18 inch wheels, BC Racing NA coilovers, Injen cold air intake and a Magnaflow exhaust.

In 2010, Troy was one of the top 20 car audio installers in the nation. He used his extensive car audio knowledge to completely overhaul the Fiat’s audio system. Components from Hy-brid Audio Technologies and a JL Audio sub-woofer ensure that music coming from the Fiat is loud and crisp. The Fiat successfully balanc-es daily function and car show quality. When Troy drives at what he describes as “Grandma speed,” he can get 52 miles per gallon. But watch out! He states with a laugh that “if you drive like a douche, you’ll get 23.” The Fiat won

Best Paint and Best Euro at IFO 2013. The Fiat was also the booth car for Nutek Wheels at SEMA 2013.

It would be an understatement to say that the Fiat receives attention on the streets. Wher-ever the pair goes, they re-ceive expressions of awe from onlookers. This is due to Troy’s enthusiasm for the Fiat. “On

my day off, I cruise the Strip just so I can see people like my car,” he laughs. Once, a man driving in the opposite direc-tion turned around to take a picture of the Fiat. Another time, a passerby comment-ed that the vehicle’s dynamic paint job made the Fiat look like it was changing color. “I get hi-fives at the gas station,” Troy beams.

Troy isn’t the only one who loves the Fiat. His wife, Jessica, was an early supporter of work on the vehicle. Despite Troy’s long list of future mods, the next will be all about family. Troy plans to customize hisbaby’s car seat to match the interior of the Fiat. Black leather and suede.

Power Couple:Geoff and Jamie

When couples in regular relationships think about purchasing a vehicle, the most important things that come

to mind are fuel economy, something budget-friendly, maybe even what color the car should be. Geoff and Jamie threw that out the window entirely when they decided they each wanted a 2014 Evolution X for themselves.

In every relationship, there’s always a little bit of competition to keep things interesting. For Geoff Conlin and Jamie Bearden though, you can say that’s a little bit of an understatement. Both play soccer on Friday nights at an indoor field; but it was a matter of who was best with their feet. Even before the two met each other, both wanted a GSX; but Geoff beat Jamie to that with his now fully built DSM. Jamie then opted for a Scion TC with bright eye-catching highlighter green wheels. Not content in their lax in competition, they decided to turn it up a notch. A couple that evolves together, stays together.

After doing their research, Geoff and Jamie found the cars they wanted. They had to make the trek to get there though, because they had found their cars at South Coast Mitsubishi in Costa Mesa California. The deal was just too good to pass up and what better way to let the feeling (and smell) of a new car sink in than by driving it a few hours to bring it home. It wasn’t all that easy selecting the colors of their cars either. Geoff already had a white GSX at home and didn’t want to opt for a

“I’d find myself at home onlinelooking at downpipes, exhausts, wheels, suspension. The car wastaking over my life!”

white evo, but once there, he knew white was the way to go. Jamie on the other hand had her heart set on a graphite grey color, but only to find out that the 2014 grey wasn’t the same anymore. She then made the decision on the iconic Mitsubishi red color for herself. They still argue over who bought their car first, but with Geoff signing the contract first, Jamie let him with this one.. for now. The end result was Geoff in a white Evo GSR, and Jamie in a red Evo MR.

Less than a month had passed before the modifications started. Jamie who always loved cars in the past, found that her passion slowly grew to an obsession. “I’d find myself at home online looking at downpipes, exhausts, wheels, suspension. The car was taking over my life!” She slowly came to her senses and chose to make her first purchase in a long list of modifications that she would be doing over time. The shoes that she chose for her baby was Option Lab S401 18x9.5 in glossy white. Jamie plans on lowering springs soon, but for the time being she just wants to enjoy the car as it is. Geoff, already a vet in the modifying world, started with wheels as well, going with Konig Milligram 18x10. He chose to powdercoat the wheels in candy red and had it done locally at Snail Motorsports. Geoff is also sponsored by Stance suspension with his Super Sport coilovers. Future plans for Geoff includes exhaust, intake, an upgraded turbo, and E85 but all in good time.

Whether they chose to complement each others’ cars with the color of the body and wheels on purpose or not, is something that just kind of happened. People know that when they see those two cars out together, that it’s this power couple of Evo owners. Going out for a date night? They’ll each drive their own car. Do they miss riding with each other to head out for dinner? Sometimes. They make the most out of it though, by racing to the next location. It will always be the spirit of competition for these two.

Ride-Along with the Vegasevos crew on their cruise to Mt. Charleston!

Las Vegas owners of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution have been gathering since the car was released in the U.S. in 2003. Back then, enthusiasts met in

forums on the website EvolutionM.net. The Las Vegas Evo thread was one of the largest and most active threads on the site. Its massive length contributed to site wide performance issues and was eventually closed when a new thread was created in 2010. When EvoM was no longer efficient enough to handle the volume of interest, enthusiasts moved their community to Facebook. The group was originally named LV Lancers, but after a few months, members held a vote and renamed the car club VegasEvos.

The group as it stands now has been forming since 2009 and a lot of its members are now very close friends. With close to 300 members, VegasEvos is comprised of enthusiasts with many different interests. You’ll find cars that run 9-second quarter miles, street driven cars with 800whp, daily driven cars with over 150k miles that drive straight to an autocross, and beautiful, SEMA Show worthy show cars. The ultra-diverse group includes members in a wide age range and members from a few different countries. The car club’s mixture of backgrounds and personalities creates an environment where knowledge is freely shared among its members. Have a car issue? Post your question on Facebook or the club’s site, and no less than a dozen people will respond with ideas and suggestions. Need help installing something? Ask the group (and maybe offer to supply the beer) and someone will volunteer.

Members of VegasEvos actively seek out new members by inviting them to join. Active members place VegasEvos business cards on any Evo that looks unfamiliar to the group. This practice is contributing to the rapid expansion of the community.

VegasEvos members typically meet every Thursday at Kaba Curry near Las Vegas’ Chinatown neighborhood. At their meets, the VegasEvos talk cars, start to unwind from the week, and enjoy good food and company. Quarterly cruises are also held. The cruise for the first quarter of 2014 was a 60+ mile route from Northwest Vegas up to Mt. Charleston and Lee Canyon. While they were on the mountain, they took a few minutes to play in the snow. One person even managed to find the remnants of a sled to slide down a hill into a jump. After he caught a little bit of air, others decided to join in on the fun!

After the fun on the mountain, the group cruised down to Floyd Lamb Park for a BBQ. The food ranged from awesome carne asada, seasoned chicken and burgers to bacon wrapped peppers, brownies, and chips. The food was combined with lots of positive vibes and good times.

Although the group is named VegasEvos, all Mitsubishi enthusiasts are welcome. You can findthem at Facebook.com/groups/lvlancer orVegasEvos.net.

Kevin Maharaj is one of VegasEvos’ newest members. Originally from New Jersey, Kevin came to Las Vegas in

2013 to live on his own. “It’s a huge jump from living with your parents all your life and then to move 3,000 miles away, but I chose to.”

From a young age, Kevin remembers always being into cars. “My dad was a truck driver and mechanic all his life and that rubbed off on me at a young age. I remember helping him work on his cars all the time. Just sitting there and watching or attempting to help by passing tools. I could say he inspired me and made my passion for cars stronger.” Kevin took notice to the Evo when he saw it while playing the original Gran Turismo. “I always knew it was going to be my car when I got older.” Although the current generation Evo X was not his first choice (he still wants an Evo IX MR), his 2008 Evo X

GSR has a special place in his heart.

His goal was a 400whp car that could be daily driven without issue. He also needs it to retain its good handling characteris-tics because he likes to attend autocross events as well. “I’m still learning about what the Evo can do and how to better it in the future.” Kevin was recently tuned on E85 and his car put down 390whp and 377wtq. Helping him reach this goal is a K&N Typhoon intake, ETS Downpipe with O2 dump, ETS test pipe, and GReddy Spec-trum Catback. The car is lowered on Eibach Springs and it sits on 18x10.5 Volk Racing TE37 wheels.

Future plans include coilovers and a new clutch. When the car is paid off, Kevin would like to upgrade the turbo and install a wide body kit. “Until then, I am just enjoying the car for now.”

Originally from California, VegasEvos member Mizki Lokhart joined the group a few years back. Mizki fell in

love with the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution when she saw it in The Fast and the Furious. “I fell in love with the green color…and how much it stood out from the other cars in the movie.” Her interest in the movie, along with her older sister being into cars, helped set the stage for what was to come.

Mizki’s car is truly unique. From the big rally-style lights in the front and Cusco roll cage mounted inside to the muddy Yoda doll hanging from the rear tow hook, you will always notice this car when it zooms past you.

Her motor is built using CP forged internals and GSC S2 cams. Nisei intercooler piping

mated to an ETS 3” intercooler help keep the intake charge cool in the hot Vegas summers. A Helix downpipe and exhaust direct the engine’s exhaust gases away from the turbo.

The car’s livery is inspired by the World Ral-ly Championship car that Gigi Galli piloted. “I wentthe rally route with my car because no one else was doing it, and I wanted to be unique in the carscene”, she says. “I sort of fell in love with the Red Rally Evo 7 that Gigi Galli drove, and wanted my car to look like it.”

Mizki’s future plans include upgrading to an FP Green turbo accompanied by a tune on E85.

With Brittney Beale

Ladies Rides

girlpower!Written by: Kareem Tamimi | Photos Lauder Corea

We here at Carbon Automotive Lifestyle Magazine tend to fea-

ture a lot of sporty and fast cars. Because of this, we tend to for-get that some people are more interested in the aesthetic beau-ty of a rare-to-find model than how fast they can go from 0 to 60mph. Take 35-year-old Brittney Beale and her 1993 Honda Del Sol for instance. Though not as interested in racing or exhibition, she’s a shining example of how far a simple appreciation in a car can get someone.

Beale, who runs her own busi-ness selling electronics online and performing home installa-tions, originally found an interest in cars when she and her hus-band were looking for a car for their teenage son. The car they came across was a 1993 Honda Prelude that they proceeded to customize themselves. Short-ly after, she came across what would later become her dream car: A 1993 Honda Del Sol. Buy-ing it at auction, Beale purchased the Del Sol not because of the price or how well it ran, but be-cause it was completely unique to her.

After practically rebuilding it from top to bottom, the final product was truly a thing of beauty. From a custom paint job and upgraded engine to a full custom audio system and upgraded interior, she spared no expense to turn this once raggedy antique into a showstopper. Speaking of shows, Beale’s hard work paid off when she decided to start attending shows with her Del Sol on display and won multiple awards from the likes of IFO 2013, Sin City Shakedown, SOC Car Show, and many others. Since then, she has become a regular at every show in the Las Vegas area and attends various meets when she can. Though she had to purchase another daily to preserve her Del Sol for meets and shows exclusively, that doesn’t mean she’s done pampering her dream car. She plans to install Air Ride suspension, a custom exhaust, and custom-made black floor mats among other things.

Despite all her future plans, she loves her car the way it is, and it’s that same appreciation she has for her car that has ultimately led to the success she has had. None of this would have been pos-sible, however, without the support her husband Donnie, her family, friends, and sponsors have given her.

Nowadays, you can find Beale and her award-win-ning Del Sol at the Vapor Union meets on Wednesdays, tuning up her car with the rest of the Knights car club members she’s affiliated with, or watching her take 1st place at the next car show.

Project: be:CALM goes to Autocross! It’s been two months since Project be:CALM had Stance Super

Sport+ Coilovers installed. Owner Lauder Corea has since had the opportunity to daily drive his EvoX and shares his thoughts

on his new suspension versus stock, on the streets. The car certainly sits lower, so he’s had to master the art of going over speedbumps at an angle and managing up the steep driveway in the same, careful manner. That’s all great and dandy, but what does his Stance Super Sport+ Coilovers do, other than lower the car a good few inches?

Stance Super Sport coilovers is the crown jewel suspension of Stance. The inverted monotube technology along with Super Sport dampers give you the ability to easily adjust the 15 way dampening adjustment for a comfortable ride for the streets. However with these coilovers, you are then able to quickly adjust for a more aggressive setting for the track. Where the (+) comes in, is in the helper spring. The helper spring allows for increasing the rebound of the spring.

Fast forward to the middle of January and Lauder finds himself at his first ever Las Vegas Region Sports Car Club of America Autocross event. He knew his baby wasn’t always going to be babied and he knew the best way to really get a feel for his car and his new suspension setup was to take it to the track. He immediately found that body roll was almost non existent because the quick rebound of the springs. Modest negative camber kept the tires gripping throughout the tight turns of the track layout.

For Project be:CALM’s current set up, Lauder was incredibly happy with the results of Stance’s Super Sport+ Coilovers. It provides him great comfort while daily driving, but he knows that it can also be track ready with just a few adjustments for a race weekend.

Stay tuned for what happens next with Project be:CALM in Carbon Automotive Lifestyle Magazine’s March issue!

Let’s start off with you telling us a little bit about yourself.

I was born and raised in Hawaii, but moved to Las Vegas 8 months ago to try out the mainland life and do hair and make up. In high school I used to cut my own hair and got many compliments which lead me to wanting to do it professionally. However, I like to consider myself the Jack Of All Trades. I trained in MMA and even fought in Hawaii two years ago! 1-0 record right now! Not just another pretty face!

Get Nuts Lab is unlike any other shop you’ll find Las Vegas, period. With professional Formula Drift driver Forrest Wang at the helm, he and his team including driver/builder Garret Nikolich and manager

Arianna Courte, among others, strive to build their client’s car to very specific criteria. They will poke and prod your brain to make sure your build is exactly everything you want it to be. The heart of the shop lies in their custom fabrication work including custom roll cages, custom knuckle kits, custom angle kits, and chassis bracing. No matter the setting, be it amateur or all the way up to professional series, Get Nuts Lab can do it all. This is the work of a team who strongly believes in aesthetics, reliability, and functionality. You and your car will be ready to hit the track with no fears.

When it came down to building this S14 for the 2013-2014 year, the team was excited to

start fresh with a bare chassis waiting at the shop. At the heart of the car is a 2JZGTE motor with fully built internals by Insane Speed. It holds Garrett’s new GTX4088R, with an 11 blade compres-sor wheel versus Garrett’s usual 6 or 7 blades. This means significantly more power- between the lines of 800 to 850 wheel horse power. Future Fab exhaust manifold with a T4 Twinscroll design ben-efits the turbo by allowing a faster spool and quicker response. A dual electric fan radiator set up was relocated to the trunk in order to allow for the monstrous engine components some breathing room. Engine management is supported by Motech M800 for this race car.

The drivetrain in a drift car requires extra care. Needing a transmission to be able to handle all the abuse of an FD season, Get Nuts chose to go with a G-Force 4-Speed dogbox transmission. With track settings changing so often, and running the risk of blowing up differentials along the way, the option to change the diff at a moment’s notice was very important. They tackled that problem with a Winters Performance Quick Change Differential.

Stance’s top of the line ProComp3 suspension allowed for fine tuning of high speed, low speed, and rebound all separately. Battle Version control arms in addition to Power by Max spindles give the S14 all the angle it needs. With Endless 6 Pot front brakes, and Wil-

wood brakes holding down the rears, stopping power won’t be a problem at high speeds. STR wheels are the shoes for this machine.

Get Nuts Lab is proud of the work they do and it is certainly shown in the craftsmanship and aesthetics of this S14. Not only did the team custom fabricate the Formula D spec roll cage, but all of the fabrication as well. The custom aero kit and paint was also done by Get Nuts Lab.

Look out for Forrest Wang, and his Get Nuts Lab team as they take on the 2014 Formula Drift series beginning this April. They have become a force to be reckoned with.

presents

Drivers from across the country come togetherto compete in Round 1 of Vegas Pro-Am.

When I say we at Carbon are enthusiasts at heart we mean it from the very depths of our souls. Each member has a special

place in their heart for different motorsports ranging anywhere from time attack to rally to drag and everything in-between. But my heart of hearts goes out to drifting. There’s no other feeling like going sideways; being in control of not being in control. I get excited just thinking about it! Some people see it as beating the hell out of your motor or incessantly wearing tires down to belts. Think of it what you may, but I’ll be the first to say that our grassroots

drifting here in our city of Las Vegas is a force to be reckoned with. I present to you VegasDrift and 2014’s first of many ProAM events.

It’s a crisp, cool Saturday morning here on our stomping grounds of Vegas and we’re at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. As I walk into the pit area on my way to the drivers’ meeting, it’s the very familiar sounds of impact wrenches that gets my mood going. I know these drivers are here to drive and prove their worth. At the drivers’ meeting Nick Dizon, head honcho of Vegas Drift, welcomes you to the start of the season and introduces you to the judges of the day. If you’re familiar with the drift world, you’ll know names like Forrest Wang, Tommy Suell,

Danny George, and Brandon Wicknick. If the drivers were nervous knowing that professional Formula Drift drivers would be judging their every move on the track, you couldn’t tell.

The ever popular S chassis was still a staple in the drifting world among other cars like 350Z’s and Soarer’s. What was a change for me was the very different sounds of a supercharger or a V8 in place of an SR or RB; but I learned to accept change. Change is good. I could definitely see that today was going to have a lot in store.

Each heat had two rounds, in which the lead car and the chaser would change places. Judging consisted of angle entry, getting as close as possible to the clipping points, and speed of the entry. The chaser had to stay close enough to the leader as to not lose the advantage and vice versa.

Once on the track, and a few hours of practice later, 16 qualified drivers made it to the first round. Many drivers learned quick though that the track was unforgiving. One driver hit the gravel so hard that the front bumper came off, it was run over, and then broke the wheel studs on the passenger side. Transmissions gave out. Bumper to bumper hits were bound to happen too with these guys giving it their all to get to the top.

Through setbacks, triumphs, and lots of “ONE MORE TIME’s!” Vegas Drift ProAm had found their winners for the competition. In Third place came Spike Chen with his supercharged V8 S13. The last superheated battle gave us Second place winner, Mike Fulkerson with his S13 and in First place came Brandon Patterson in his V8 powered S14.

This is the first of many VegasDrift competitions, with the next local event here at LVMS on April 27th. VegasDrift encourages fans to come and spectate. Want to do more? If you’re ready to drift, or just want to start, register for the practice events, mount some fresh rubber and get ready to hit the tarmac.
