Bring the Family to the Saw Filers’Meeting? We are seeing more of this.The meetings are typically held inplaces worth visiting with activities forthe whole family.

Bad Carbide AgainWe are getting more emergency callsfrom people who bought cheap carbidethat didn’t work. They bought carbidefrom someone else to save a fewdollars. Now their saws have lost orbroken tips. This is happening in bothmills and saw shops.

This is our saw filer logo. We came upwith it maybe 10 years ago. At the timethere was a lot of discussion about theterm saw filer and what it meant. Wethought we would go with a heroicapproach. The inspiration for this wasa mechanic, Thor from the movieAdventures in Babysitting. He is themechanic who rescues the really prettygirl and the little kids. In addition mostsaw filers really are extremelyhandsome, muscular hunks.

Now this logo is looking a little dated.Mike West thinks he has too much hair.

We would like to have a logo that ismore multicultural. This guy is pureScandinavian and there are a wholebunch of excellent saw filers of almostany ethnicity you care to name.

Warren Birdon Ripped Shoulders

At the wood machining workshop I gotto hear Warren Bird of California knifeand saw speak. He was asked a questionabout ripped shoulders on saw blades.Warren’s solution was to change thedesign a bit by removing a couple ofteeth. This gives you a little more massin each shoulder. He also emphasizedthe importance of shoulder design to getas strong a shoulder as possible.

Now Warren is an incredibly intelligentman and this is just what I rememberhim saying. If you are really interestedor have questions maybe you bettercontact him directly. In all the yearsI’ve known Warren I have alwaysfound to be very gracious and morethan willing to answer questions fromanyone especially saw filers.

Rubbermaid 4500 from a RestaurantSupply Store. About $200 ea. We havebeen using 3 of them for about 10 years.They are really tough, hold a lot ofweight, go anywhere and are easy toclean.

Filtering Straight Oil /Water Based Coolants

We now have a filter system that filtersstraight oil coolants. Above is our CP2020 which filters tight oil coolant verywell. It is also available as a wallmount unit.

Here is our CP 2002, which has been anextremely good unit on water basedcoolants for about eight years.

We have tried it on straight oil withvery poor results. It filtered for maybean hour before it plugged up.

Oil is much thicker than water. Thefilters were good enough to filter the oilfor a while but, as soon as they startedto a load up with dirt, the oil was toothick to get though.

Here are the two units side by side.

A filter is a series of holes thatseparates particles from liquid.Oil is thicker than water so it is harderto filter out small particles.In addition oil transfers the pressurefrom the pump directly to the filter andis much more likely to collapse a filterelement.

The secret is a high-tech filter. This isstainless steel inside and outside tohandle the pressure. It is smaller thanour water filters and has a pleatedsurface to provide sensational filtersurface area at the high pressures oilcreates.

We recommend monthly filter changesbut many go much longer than that.

Coolant filter LifeWe recommend a filter change after onemonth in use on a single machine whichis about 160 hours of use. In our testswe have seen them go 21 days of 20hour shifts, which is 420 hours. Manyfolks get 2 or 3 months out of the filterswhich is 320 to 480machine hours.

The rating is based on the amount ofsludge generated by the machine in anhour. If you run a machine 40 hoursand filter one hour then you remove allthe sludge from the 40 hours ofrunning.

If you are running 11 machines thenyou are getting 440 hours life out of thefilters in a week.

Two things can happen. 1. If filters arerun too long they can load up andreleases over and over so they don’t doany good past a certain point. It lookslike they are working, however. This islike pouring fifty gallons of water in afive gallon bucket. It works becausewhen you are though the 50 gallondrum is empty and the bucket is full.You just ignore the water on theground. 2. After a long enough timethere will be a lot of sub-micronparticles in the coolant and this can giveit a gray color.

Side Dial IndicatorsMike Steinfeldt of Central Saw inSpokane, WA called and wanted aspecial kind of side dial indicator. Hedescribed it as a side dial indicator witha heavy round base that weighed about2 pounds. Pretty good description.

I had seen them but I didn’t knowwhere to find them so I made a couplecalls and Mike West posted it on hissaw filer network.

People remember them being availablethrough Pac Hoe, SystiMatic, andCascade Southern. These have allbecome part of the Simondsorganization and Norm Brown ofSimonds says that they are readilyavailable, Simonds item. # 36435

Saw Filer History

The saw filer, or "camp dentist" oftensharpened 12-15 saws in a single day.Each saw took nearly an hour tosharpen, and the filer was forced towork well into the night if the sawyersdid not have spare saws to use the nextday. The shack's extra window andskylights provided the filer with goodlight to work by until the sun wentdown.

On the saw that we tried. How manytimes we resharpen a blade before weorder new or have retipped we are notsure. Most blades get damaged byhitting something so we have thecarbides retipped a lot. How often doregular blades have to be resharpened?We normally have our carbide tippedblades sharpened every week.

The new Cement II blade normally laststwice as long before it gets damaged.The best so far is four weeks and oneand a half million cuts before wechanged it out which is four timeslonger.

I called a few days ago about the SAWFILER’S car hardly expecting that itwould still be available. Then when youtook my shipping info. how surprisedand pleased. It has come and howwonderful it is to have. Thank you! Itcame with a lighted cap and set ofwrenches too. Wow!

Now to add a little to my story. On thephone I told you that for my firstChristmas, 1938, my father bought me

some Lionel trains and that I still havethem. This is true. And I put them upevery Christmas to play with them. Andmy two sons come over and play withthem. And my grand children comeover and play with them (undersupervision). And my great grand soncomes over to play with them (undersupervision). One grandson and I weretalking about what to do next year andhow to incorporate the new SAWFILER’S car. We plan to make a forestand put the car over in the edge of theforest to replicate part of mygrandfather’s sawmill that he had inNew Jersey before I was born. Mygrandfather and my father, who was justa boy at the time would drive to thewoods in the Ford model T where thesawmill was and jack up the rear wheelof the "T", put a flat belt on the tire andpower the mill with the "T’. I wouldlike very much to have a picture of themill in operation, but alas the folkswere poor and cameras and film out ofthe question.

But I am including a picture or two ofthe trains that I do have from my father.
