Calm downCar accidents can happen quickly. It is important to stay calm, collect your thoughts and evaluate the situation at hand. Staying calm helps you not
only remember the details of the accident, but also keeps all parties involved focused on the moment.
STEP 1
ways to cool down your mind

Emergency needed?
Your safety is important. Check yourself and others for injuries. Be careful. Not all injuries can be seen.
If anyone is not feeling 100% alright, Call 9-1-1. If no one is injured, there is no need to call 9-1-1.
STEP 2

where? city, road name, and anything you observe to help locate you.
Call 9-1-1 if anyone is injured. Be ready to provide the following information:

STEP 3
Move off the road when safe
Before any discussion about who is at fault for the accident, move the vehicles off the
road if it’s safe to do so.
the main purpose is, that both sides of traffic can see you.
turn on hazard light.
move your car to a side street when safe.
if you can not move your car, set up a road triangle or any warning signs.
WHEN SAFE, MOVE THE CARS ASIDE.
STEP 4
Be the photographer
Pictures can be more powerful than words. If you have a cell phone camera or a camera around,
take photos of the crash scene and the damage done to the cars or property.
More is not always better. Make sure the following are photographed:
the cars invovled
the position of the cars
all damages to both cars
PHOTOS ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS.
STEP 5
Get down to the details
This is the most important step. Exchange information with all the drivers involved in the
accident. Focus your mind and get as many details down as possible. Don’t forget to find witnesses.

DON’T LOSE TRACK. FOCUS AND INTERACT.

what direction were you both going?what speed were you both going?

Answer all these questions. Draw diagrams if needed.
STEP 6
Make some calls
Whenever auto accidents happen, these are the phone numbers you might need. Don’t forget to file a claim with your auto insurance company
as soon as possible after the accident.

List contacts that you might want to talk to at this point. These can be your families and friend. If needed, schedule an appointment with your family doctor for any post-accident check-ups.

safe to drive: drive your vehicle home, or to any closes preferred autobodyshops if maintainance is needed.
not safe to drive: call tow-truck service, or your roadside assistance number for towing service. Make sure you keep the towing company information for finding your vehicle.
auto bodyshops
safe to drive: move your vehicle to any closest auto bodyshops that you prefer.
not safe to drive: call tow-truck service. let your auto insurance company know about these preferred auto bodyshops when you file your claim.
auto insurance compnay
Call your agent or insurance company’s number immediately, even at the scene with the police if possible. Sometimes the police officer can give your insurance company more accurate information. This can help your claim to be processed.
