Capturing Images
White Balance
• camera setting that adjusts for lighting in order to make white objects appear white in photos/film
• more difficult than it might seem due to the fact that light cast from different sources is different in color (candles, halogen lights).
IRIS
• iris is an adjustable aperture used to control the amount of light coming through the lens.
• The more the iris is opened, the more light it lets in and the brighter the scene will be.
Zebra
• When turned on, looks like zebra stripes going across viewfinder or screen
• Lines aren’t recorded on tape• Appear over areas that are overexposed over
a certain level • Used to guide adjustment of the aperture and
shutter speed to make your shot brighter or darker depending on what you’re shooting
Shutter
• a mechanical device for opening and closing the aperture of a camera lens to expose film
• Allows light to pass for a determined period of time, for the purpose of exposing photographic film or a light-sensitive electronic sensor to light to capture a permanent image of a scene
• used to allow pulses of light to pass outwards, as in a movie projector or signal lamp
Aspect ratio
• the width-to-height ratio of a film or television image
• Most common aspect ratios are 4:3 and 3:2
