I chose Plymouth Marine office for my Masters as the experience I had doing my Mates there was
very good. My Masters oral however was not the fire-side' chat that had been mentioned a number
of times at college, but rather a very formal series of questions with very little conversation around
the subjects.
Captain Ross had a quick glance at my discharge book and then launched into questions'
What is a Passenger shiP?
(He commented that a lot of passenger ship candidates don't know this)
Which shiPs does ISM aPPIY to?
I mentioned SOL1{S Ch tX and thot it would be all possenger ships and cargo ships over 50O grt'
what entries go in the narrative section of the official Log Book?
I mentioned captain,s handover, crew members signed off, disciplinary hearings, details of births and
deaths.
He was after something else... he said what meteorological occurrences would you put in???
t mentioned the meteorological occurrences that would require a report under Solas Chopter V/37'
(Dongerous ice, conditions for ice occretion, storm force winds with no warning etc)
He seemed haPPY with this!

this ted on procedures for rigging an emergency tow! I mentioned using anchor coble and waffled my
way through!

mentioned this captain Ross commented that if I courdn't do it then I wourd fair! Despite this added
pressure I managed to work it out!
