Welcome to a very special edition of our mid-year SIMPLY CAPTIVATING update. You will find our mid-year report a bit thicker from now on as it will incorporate our Captivating Annual Report.

2014 was a wonderful year for Captivating, and we have our donors and supporters to thank for that. With annual donation growth up 31% on the year before, 2014 was a year that enabled us to expand our support and programs to so many more people. It also set us up for an aggressive year of activity in 2015 – work that is already making in-roads that will see us together help in excess of 5,000 children and families this year. We hope you enjoy reading of our past and present work.

We’ve had a theme resonating in our minds this year inspired by a simple phrase from the 2012 World Humanitarian Day. We are Here – We Live – We Love. It’s a simple reminder to everyone that we are all capable of doing something good for someone else, no matter how big or small. For all of us, the fact we exist means we are capable of living full and meaningful lives, and loving people we meet. It’s been taught for centuries as the golden rule – treat others the way you’d like them to treat you. Amazingly, doing this brings so much personal joy and reward. In the eyes of the world it’s the greatest, the most beautiful and the most inspirational that are celebrated. However, we see it quite differently. In our world, it’s the most humble, the least selfish, the most humane that brings the applause. The person who, for no reason apart from wanting to help, steps forward to offer a hand to someone less fortunate. We say that person is HERE, they truly LIVE, because they have chosen to LOVE. In other words, they get it. Life for them is bigger, brighter, more beautiful. We hope 2015 is shaping up to be exactly that for you. Thanks for walking this journey with us, or maybe considering doing so. Together, we can change the world.

Andrew & Julie ColquhounFounders – Captivating International.

Damchu Drolma (pictured) is an amazing young lady. 8 years

ago she was not in school, and was trying to come to grips

with the loss of her father, grandfather and her mother being ill.

Her life was very difficult until the Seng Girls Vocational Training

School took her in. Today, she is working towards finishing

school at a Government high school, specialising in dance.

She is an incredible inspiration to all of her sisters, and is shown

performing the Government approved King Gesar Opera.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

At the outset I would like to express my deepest personal note of appreciation to each and every friend and supporter of Captivating. An organization such as Captivating does not exist without the tireless sacrifice of our volunteers and the generous financial support of our donors. We salute you and look forward to continuing our partnership into the future.

2014 was an exciting year for Captivating. The funds raised throughout the year grew enabling us to assist many more children and families trapped in extreme poverty. Fundraising events such as the Annual Charity Ball , the Kidz With Heart Mini Olympics , the Midnight Charity Race and now The Nanshan Challenge continue to raise funds and awareness of the projects carried out by Captivating and engage an amazing community. Around the world, child sponsors and project sponsors continue to stand behind and keep pace with our expanding work. The abridged financial statements taken from the full audited statements included in the report have been fully and independently audited in accordance with our commitment for full and complete transparency.

In 201 4 we saw exciting things unfold in our beneficiary projects :

In China, our continuation of support for the work of LOVEQTRA and the Seng Girls Vocational Training School entered its 6th year, and Captivating’s work expanded significantly in Western China with the addition of several new initiatives aimed at seeing villages and their family’s progress out of poverty.

In Guizhou, our village development project in partnership with Heifer China has now spread to bring hope of a poverty-free future to over 200 families in three rural villages.

In Kenya our new micro-finance program in partnership with ACDF was started and is now providing small loans to assist families expand their income generating activities.

A MESSAGE FROM

DEAN BEVERIDGECHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

And in Nepal, we expanded our work to combat the trafficking of women and children into sex and other forms of slavery. Combined, our work with two partners (3 Angels Nepal and Tiny Hands International) was instrumental in intercepting and interviewing over 3,000 suspicious border crossing cases, with over 160 girls being rescued from the very act of being trafficked into India and China. Education and awareness of the issues of trafficking expanded significantly through the Nepal government approved radio station funded by Captivating, and several community education initiatives.

Looking ahead, we at Captivating are committed to using our energy to fight the root causes of extreme poverty. With your help we have entered 201 5 enthusiastically, with a strong and accountable team , and with the renewed vision of seeing many people free of the bonds of poverty.

On behalf of the Board I would finally like to pay tribute to Andrew and Julie Colquhoun who work tirelessly to lead the work of Captivating. Without their efforts Captivating would not be in the strong position it currently finds itself.

Regards

THANK YOU for making 2014 our best year yet.

Together, we’ve brought real hope to a record number of children and families.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT: We believe that within every child lies the potential for greatness – something of incredible

value each child can bring to their world. For many, much of this value is lost because of poverty or injustice. Captivating’s mission and passion is to see disadvantaged,

impoverished, poorest-of-the-poor children soar – see them reach out for a better tomorrow.

YANG YI (13) wrote us this story: “I’m in Grade 6, and I live in a big family of 15 people. My parents and brother live in a far-away city to work, and I am left at home with my very old grandparents farming our small plot of land. I miss my parents a lot. In April 2012, Captivating Village Development Program came to Daxi village. We received loan money of RMB 5,000 (US$806) to buy cattle and piglets. My little sisters walk around the pigsty to watch these pigs every day, expecting them to grow up faster. At the end of each year, we now sell three pigs, but also eat one. So yummy, and so lucky. I hope we can have a good life as soon as possible so that my parents and brother can come back home. We passed RMB 5,000 (US$806) of gift money to the next family in July, 2014. I hope this next family can have a better life as well. I am grateful for the help of Captivating which leads us to have a totally different life.

2014 THE YEAR THAT WAS:

SOUTHERN CHINA

• A further 63 new families have joined our Village Development Program in Kaili County, Guizhou Province. This brings the total families on their way to a poverty free future to 282. This program is on track for completion in 2017 as planned;

• Captivating has partnered with a new project group in Guizhou focused on providing advanced care and attention to 100 special needs children;

CAPTIVATING KAILI Village Development Project - Guizhou Province: Captivating has partnered with Heifer China and the Animal Husbandry department of Kaili County to end poverty for 3 remote villages. Started in 2012, this 5 year program will eventually place 450 families on their way to a poverty free future. With most of the financial investment now completed in these first 3 years, we are now focused on observing and assisting the first round of families “pass-on-the-gift” to the next group. We are half way through this phase with wonderful results being experienced. Through this program, upwards of 500 children will be able to finish their schooling.

18

Page 19: Captivating International Newsletter June 2015

PROJECT EDEN GETS A CHEVRON “HUMAN ENERGY” BOOST - Project Eden received another year of support from CHEVRON, and Eden had the thrill of hosting Kellie and Kent Rinehart. Kent mentioned, “it’s great seeing happy, excited girls and also lots of laughter and determination. We came away knowing that the team at Project Eden have certainly created a safe and nurturing environment where the girls feel safe and loved”.

2015THE STORY

SO FAR :

PROJECT EDEN - Guangdong Province: Captivating partners with a wonderful family focused on providing advanced learning and catch-up schooling opportunities to girls from the Seng Girls Vocational Training School. Specifically, older girls behind in their education are tutored in Chinese language, English, computers and catch-up math. From here they move onto their next best opportunity, whether this be their first job or further study elsewhere. 16 girls have benefited from this program in 2014.

WHAT WE DO: In partnership with our two on-the-ground partners, 3 Angels Nepal (“3AN”) and Tiny Hands International, Captivating is stopping girls and women from becoming (or remaining) victims of human trafficking in Nepal. We do this through 3 key strategies:

STORIES FROM 2 OF THE GIRLS THAT HAVE BEEN RESCUED AND INTERCEPTED AT THE BORDER .

(Names withheld for protection)

“My name is Emma and I’m 20 and a Nepali. I was living in very poor economic conditions and there were no job opportunities where I was from. I went searching for work from place to place and a stranger approached and gave me hope that he’d find work for me. I eagerly went with him but my dream of work became a nightmare as I was taken to India and sold into prostitution. A Nepali worker in the same hotel heard about my situation and helped me to run away to the border where I was rescued by 3AN’s border monitoring staff and taken to a transit home and then a safe house as I couldn’t return to my village as I was considered an outcast now. I’m one of the lucky ones as I’ve been given counselling, education, rehabilitation and vocational training skills development”

“My name is Hannah and I’m a Nepali girl who is 18. A man approached me and offered me work in India. We travelled to the Indian border with 8 other girls that were being given work as well. At the border we were stopped and interviewed by staff at the border monitoring booth (who look for girls being trafficked) and asked a number of questions, including “Where we were going, what we were going to be doing, how long did we plan to stay and who the man was that was with us”. We really didn’t know how to answer these and it was at that point that I was told I was being trafficked.”

21

Page 22: Captivating International Newsletter June 2015

NEPAL2015 THE STORY

SO FAR :• There has been a definite increase in the

incidence and regularity of girls being trafficked post-earthquake as smugglers move in on widespread desperation;

• Captivating partner 3 Angels Nepal was invited to team up with Government bodies to work collaboratively on solutions;

• Captivating’s work with Tiny Hands expands to support an additional border monitoring station on the Nepal/India border;

• 3AN gains government approval to increase the range of the Captivating supported Radio Station (now reaching an additional 10 million people and educating on trafficking issues);

• Captivating starts discussions with ADRA, another NGO operating in Nepal, to implement solutions to address one of the root causes of trafficking in remote villages – poverty;

• Our 5 Captivating financed border monitoring stations are currently intercepting, interviewing and providing counsel/warnings to over 400 suspicious border crossing cases a month. Of these border interviews, an average of 15 girls a month are being rescued in the very act of being trafficked.

THE AFRICAN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION (ACDF)

is our local Micro-Finance institutional partner helping us implement an experimental loans program focused on seeing willing Foster Families improve their income potential

so they can afford to care for orphaned children from their communities. This program commenced in January 2014 and has 122 families now enrolled in the program as at Dec 2014 with a capital fund of US$25k. 105 orphaned children are cared for by these families.

THE KISII KIDS CARE HOME (KKCH) is

a large foster family initiative run by a dedicated couple caring for 47 children. Captivating funded 80% of their running costs in 2014 as well as assistance with education/schooling costs. Assistance for this program is not

continuing in 2015.

WHAT WE DO: Poverty and AIDS is claiming the lives of so many parents and children in Kenya. 1 in 10 children are being orphaned due to AIDS, and in rural agricultural communities poverty is still affecting the majority of the farming population. Through Community Foster Care and Micro-Finance programs, we hope to elevate willing foster families above the poverty line and see orphaned children continue to experience the love and care of a family.

THIS IS FIONA (WHITE TOP) WITH TWO OF HER CLIENTS, AND EVERLYNE (RED TOP) FROM CAPTIVATING KENYA – A few years ago, Fiona fostered two street boys - Michael & Jeremy, whose parents had died from HIV/AIDS. Fiona’s heart broke for these two children. At the time, Fiona was a small scale business lady farming maize to sell at the market. She had been struggling from day to day to make ends meet. She knew the future was stable only if she could expand her business but she had

no extra capital to do this. She decided to join the Captivating/ACDF loans program specifically existing to help struggling foster families. Now twelve months on, Fiona’s maize business has expanded 60%. She is also buying maize in bulk from other farmers, cleaning and bagging it, and then selling it at the market for 30% profit. In a month, she is making extra profit of US$67. With the average cost of feeding, clothing and schooling a child around $50 a month, the schooling futures of Michael and Jeremy are looking so much better.

• We are still assessing the potential for expansion of the ACDF program. Although we would like to expand, low repayment rates by clients and an inherently high “welfare mentality” is proving challenging;

• Other partnership opportunities are being considered focused on addressing family poverty and assisting orphans.
