Summary: The Perrie Leizear House had architectural signifi­cance as an example of a late nineteenth century vernacular I-house. However, the building has undergone so many alterations that it no longer illustrates the defining characteristics of this house type.

Built around 1870, the structure is a central hall I-house with an ell addition. This house type, three bays in width, with an order­ly symmetrical facade and vertical massing and broad central hallway was a dwelling type,cornmonly built by Montgomery County's affluent farmers in this per1od. This house no longer retains sufficient integrity of design or materials to convey any architectural or his­torical significance.1

The Perrie Leizear House was probably built by Samuel Leizear around 1870 when he purchased a nine and one-half acre parcel for $250 that was once a part of the historic land grant "Snowden's Manor Enlarged." In the following year, Leizear purchased an additional six and three quarter acres from Andrew and Margaret Harding for $300. The house and modest farmstead were sold for $725 soon after Samuel Leizear's death in 1875 by a court appointed trustee to Elizabeth Leizear for the benefit of his widow Rebecca and their seven children. Elizabeth Leizear was the wife of county sheriff Perrie Leizear for whom the house has traditionally been named. The Leizears sold the property in 1880 to Thomas Moore for $700. Moore resided in the house for nearly twenty years before selling the house in 1898. After being bought and sold by numerous owners, Elsie and William Briggs settled into the residence between 1918 and 1955. The current owners are Nicholas and Areti Perantonakis.

The main (east) facade has three bays, with a central door, and a one-story, open Victorian porch across the front. The porch has turned posts and a railing. Window sash is 2/2. The steep A-roof .is covered with stan­ding seam metal, and there is a stove-chimney in the north­end wall. Siding covered by asbestos shingles. There are several older farm buildings to the rear, including a barn/stable and a carriage shed.

The Perrie Leizear house, though significantly altered, is significant as an example of rural vernacular architecture typical of that constructed in Montgomery County from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries. The house was probably built by Samuel Leizear about J.a70.1 Samuel had purchased 9 1/2 acres of a tract of land referred to as 11 Snowden's Manor Enlarged" in June of 1870 1 from the Tyson family for $285.2 In April of 1871, he purchased an additional 6 3/4 acres from Andrew and Margaret Harding for $300~3 Samuel died in 1875 leaving a widow, Rebecca, and sevenFhildren. Because the property was not susceptible ~o division, it was sold by a court appointed trustee to Elizabeth Leizear, the

_fe of Ferrie Leizear, for $725.4 Perrie was the area's sheriff.

Elizabeth and Ferrie sold the house in March of 1880 to Thomas Moore for $700.5 After Moore sold it in 1898, the house passed through a succession of, owners. It was owned for 37 years by Elsie and William Briggs (from 1918 tilll955) .6 The house is presently owned by Nicholas and Areti Perantonakis and house~ a television repair shop.7 However, due to alterations to the exterior of the house, it has failed to maintain its architectural integrity.

According to the 1878 map, this might have been the home of Perry Leishear. He was a member of the local Quaker community, and served as sheriff during the Civil War period.
