The Harrison Ward Farm is a fine example of a late nineteenth century, middle class, rural farmstead which features a striking house and barn pair of center gable form with Renaissance Revival detailing. The barn has a prominent setting near the road's shoulder, while the house, nestled in a group of mature trees, is located on a rise above the road. The entire property is enclosed with a combination of stockade, chain link, and post and rail fencing. There are new residential developments to the south, east, and west, across Travilah Road, and the once-rural setting is now quite suburban in feeling. The remaining open fields are important to the character of the farmhouse and outbuildings.

The Ward Farmhouse, constructed in 1885, has a two and.one half story, four bay front section facing west and rear ell to the east. The house has a picturesque asynunetry achieved by an off "'"center cross gable (second bay from the north), three story tower (southmost bay), and wrap around porch. Thin cornices with deep eaves meet a wide frieze without architrave and end with returns at each gable.

The roofs of the main house, tower, and porch are standing seam metal; siding is covered with stucco. Windows, most of which have operable shutters, are two over two sash on the front elevation (except for the tower which has one over one), and six over six sash,· for the most part, on secondary elevations. The front entrance, beneath the cross gable, contains a paneled door with transom.

The three story, hexagonal tower features ocular (bull's eye) windows in a f ishscale frieze surmounted by a hexagonal hipped roof with wood finial. The front cross gable contains a two light lunette (half round window) while each of the three side and rear gaples con.;... tain square, four light windows. An exterior chimney stands on the · south gable end (east roof slope) of the main block and an interior chimney on the rear ell, near the intersection with the main block.

A one story porch, supported by slender square columns with wide Ionic capitals and square bases, and covered with shallow hipped roof, extends across the.front facade apd wraps around the entire north side. The porch floor is stone over concrete~

Section 7: DESCRIPTION Page 7.1

The two story, gable roof rear ell is four bays across on the south and one bay wide on the east gable end. A two story, shed-roof addition at its southwest corner is two bays wide and two bays deep, while another two story, shed roof addition to the east is two bays wide and one bay deep. There are entrances from both the south and west elevations. At the northeast corner is a two bay, one story addition with an outside entrance.

Few alterations have been made to the house. The stucco was probably applied to the siding in the early 20th century. The two additions at the corner between the main block and rear ell were constructed in the early and mid 20th century.

Standing southwest and across the drive from the house, the five bay by three bay bank barn (60' x 40') exhibits compatible Renaissance Revival detailing with louvered oculi in both side gables and front and rear cross gables, and pedimented louvered windows. The barn is covered with drop (German) siding and sits on a foundation of Seneca sandstone. Near each gable end of the raised-seam metal roof sits a cubic cupola each of which is punctuated with a turned ball finial and vented with louvered windows on most sides.

On the north facade, a central raised wagon ramp leads to a pair of large center doors on tracks, the eastmost of which contains a human size door. A round cinderblock silo, built between 1929 and 1946, without a roof sits to the west side of the ramp. On the south facade, a single central oversize door on a track is located above the stabling area which is enclosed with wood siding and early 20th century windows.

East of the barn is a three bay, gable roof corn crib with vertical wood siding and corrugated metal roof; it sits on a stone foundation and faces east. Connecting the corn crib with the bank barn is a one story, shed roof tack room with vertical wood siding and raised seam metal roof.

Northeast of the corn crib, and facing west, is a one bay, board and batten, gable roof garage with a shed roof, one bay addition across the width of the south elevation. These outbuildings are contributing. To the south of the house, beyond the fence marking the boundary of the rear yard, is a modern gambrel roof barn, which is not contributing.

Summary: The Harrison Ward Farmstead contains a handsome pairing of center gable house and barn with classical architectural details. While use of the center gable building form was widespread in Montgomery County residences built during the later 19th century, this example is noteworthy for its stylish three story tower and its good integrity. The center gable bank barn is a rare example of the use of form for an <:lgricultural b1.1ilding. The Ward Farm has secondary significance for its association with Harrison Gilmore Ward, a citizen active in tlie local community.

Architectural Significance

The center gable I house was a building form popular in Montgomery County through the second half of the 19th century. Examples have been found dating from as early as 1850 to as late as 1890. The building type is characterized by a three to five bay, two story structure which is one room deep with side gable roof artd central cross gable.

There are two main subtypes of the center gable form. One, influenced by Downing's Gothic Revival cottages, has a steeply pitched roof. Compatible elements include: gable windows which are pointed- or triangular arched or diamonds with 90 degree corners; bargeboard on center and/or side gables; full width porch with turned posts and scroll brackets. One of the best examples is Mendelssohn Terrace (#10/12), 1880, which has secondary cross gables flanking the main cross gable.

Section 8: SIGNIFICANCE Page 8.1

The other main type, based on Italianate or Renaissance Revival models, has a low slope main roof and cross gable. Stylistic elements frequently associated with this type include: gable windows which are round- or segmentally arched, or, less cormnonly, lunettes and oculi; thin cornices with wide fascia trim and wide eaves; cornices and fascia on window and door surrounds; and full width porch with square or round columns. Pleasant View (#28/19), c1879, is a typical example of this type.

The Harrison Ward Farmhouse is a fine example of the center gable type exhibiting Italianate influence. In addition to the low slope roof and center cross gable, the house exhibits recognizable stylistic elements related to this architectural style: lunette, oculi, cornice with wide eaves and frieze, and square porch columns with capitals and bases. The wrap around porch and tower create a picturesque -effect heralding the up and coming Queen Anne style.

The combination of center gable and polygonal tower elements is uncormnon in Montgomery County. The two other known examples, the Oliver Watkins House, 1851 and 1870s (#13/3), and the King Farm, 1898 (#14/32), are in the Cedar Grove vicinity and executed in the Gothic Revival mode.

The use of the center gable form for a bank barn is also rare. This example is particularly noteworthy for its fine details, including pedimented louvered windows and door, louvered oculus, drop siding, and turned ball finials.1 In addition, the barn retains much of its original integrity.

Historical Siqnif icance

Harrison Gilmore Ward (1853-1941) purchased 100 1/2 acres of unimproved land in 1881 for $2,336.62. The tract, part of uMount Prospect,u was designated Lot 2 when sold to Ward by John L. DuFief, landowner of nearly 700 acres, to pay off his debts.2

Section 8: SIGNIFICANCE Page 8.2

Ward and his wife, Ara M. Thrift (1857-1944), probably built the house in 1885. It is not known where the couple lived in the first few years after their marriage in 1879. Their first of seven children was born in 1882. Harrison and Ara Ward were active contributors to the Darnestown Presbyterian Church at a time when the church was thriving so strongly that it was expanded in 1897 with parlor and bell tower in the Gothic Revival style. Harrison Ward was a founding member of the Travilah Hall Company which was responsible for the 1910 construction of a town hall in Travilah, less than a mile south. The hall became the center of social events for the community over the next twenty years.3

The Ward children grew up to become known as upstanding and hardworking citizens of Darnestown and Travilah. Lula May Ward (1897-1976), who married Albert Cissel, helped the Bethesda Women's Farm Market to thrive. Spencer Ward (1890-1974) was highly regarded in the community and active in the Darnestown Presbyterian Church. Nettie Grace married Charles A Boyer, lived at Darne-Purdum Farm.4

The farm prospered into the twentieth century. Reflecting agricultural practices of the time, the Wards had a general farm, growing wheat, corn, and hay. Crops were hauled down Travilah Road approximate~y three miles to Pennyf ield Lock for shipment on the C & O Canal. After the closing of the canal in 1924, the Wards took their crops to Georgetown themselves, by horse and wagon.5

Upon his father's retirement, by 1929, son William Harrison Ward managed the farm with his wife Mary Virginia Darby. Like many other farmers of the era, William shifted from general farming to dairy farming. In 1948, the farm was purchased by William H. Poole, Jr. and used in later years to pasture horses. Recently, the fields were subdivided for single family dwellings which are in the process of construction. The farm buildings, now little used, are situated on a four acre lot, currently up for sale by Poole's daughter, Hallie Mosely.
