AutismIn School
Problem● Autism is a spectrum disorder that affects tens of millions
worldwide
● Autism is more common than childhood cancer, juvenile
diabetes, and Pediatric Aids combined
● Affects kids ability to perform social related tasks
● Autism negatively affects a child’s ability to do well in
school
● It becomes imperative to insure the right treatment is being
offered in school and that students are tolerant
● There may not be enough treatment for kids with Autism in
some lower budget public schools
Causes● There are very few known
causes of this disorder
● The only known cause is
that it stems from simply
genetics
● There are multiple theories
on what other causes there
could be
● Age of father, vaccines,
GMO’s,
Effects● Autism affects the part of the brain that
controls social related tasks
● Tasks such as making eye contact and
holding a conversation can be both
strenuous and difficult for autistic kids
● They become hyper-sensitive to all forms of
contact stimulant including touch, hearing,
taste, visual
● Loud noises and strange feelings can be very
disorienting
In School● Autism can make it extremely hard to work well
in school
● An autistic student may find the urge to huddle
into a corner to lock out all stimulant
● It is extremely hard for an Autistic child to
overcome inner issues let alone learn in school
● Autism treatment is expensive itself, so public
schooling for them and their families may be an
only resort
Bullying● Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning it comes in all
severities
● Asperger syndrome is a form of Autism but less severe, it
can be hard to diagnose and you may be not able to tell if
somebody has it
● kids with Aspergers may just appear to be socially
awkward but it can be much more than that.
● Because of possible social awkwardness kids with Autism
and Asperger's are easy targets for bullies
Evidence● Autism speaks is a non-profit organization founded by Susan
Wright and Bob Wright because of their grandson who also has
Autism
● According to Autism Speaks Autism has jumped from affecting 1
in 88 children to 1 in 64 a dramatic increase
● it affects 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls, it is unknown why it is
more prevalent in boys than in girls
ConclusionHow can I help?
You can help by simply being kind, tolerant, and compassionate towards
others. It may be hard to distinguish high-functioning autistic kids, so it is of the utmost importance to be kind
and tolerant to all people around you
can get involved by visiting http://www.autismspeaks.org/
My goal was to raise awareness so that it could possibly be easier for kids with Autism to learn in a
school environment.
As you can see Autism is a disorder that can make it extremely difficult for kids to perform in school.
Making it our job to help them out as much as we can, because Autism does not mean you can’t learn.
