With the protection of a fringing reef, the waters surrounding the Keppels are

amazingly calm, making it perfect for all types of water sports such as snorkelling, sea kayaking, water-skiing and tubing.

Great Keppel Island is only a 30 minute ferry transfer from the mainland and is the ‘jewel in the crown’ of Keppel Bay. It arguably has the best beaches of any Great Barrier Reef island and offers safe swimming all year round. Great Keppel Island Holiday Village and Great Keppel island Hideaway provide accommodation on the Island. Whether you’re visiting Great Keppel for a lazy Sunday picnic lunch, or staying for a couple of weeks, you can’t fail to be impressed by the scenery or the relaxed atmosphere on the island.

Camping is allowed in the Keppel Bay Islands National Park of North Keppel Island, Humpy Island, Miall Island, Middle Island, Conical Island, Divided Island and Pelican Island. Visitors must bring their own drinking water and campers require a camping permit. Permits can be purchased online or from a local Visitor Information Centre.

Ferries depart every day to Great Keppel Island from Pier One, Rosslyn Bay. A number of charters, and full day cruises, sailing adventures, and extended tour options are also available from Keppel Bay Marina. The climate and location are a perfect mix for sailing adventures. The pristine beauty of the Keppels is a cruising yachtsman’s dream come true. You can even learn to sail in tropical island waters with an experienced instructor.

Daily snorkelling services operate from both the mainland and Great Keppel Island to the pristine reefs of the Keppels – part of Australia’s Southern Great Barrier Reef. The Keppels are surrounded by shallow fringing reefs and vast, abundant marine life, which can be accessed quickly and easily. Following World War II, many towns in Queensland built war memorials. One of Yeppoon’s main commemoration of its soldiers was the renaming of ‘The Esplanade’ overlooking Main Beach to ‘Anzac Parade’. This then became one of three streets where avenues of Norfolk Pine trees were planted in 1921, symbolic of continuing life.

Yeppoon has a strong reputation as a producer of tropical and exotic fruits (mangos, pineapples, lychees) and is home to some of the largest producing pineapple farms in the State. The annual Yeppoon Lions Tropical Pinefest, held every October, is a celebration of the region’s history as a pineapple producing area.

Within walking distance of the town centre are Figtree and Ross Creeks, home to the black and little red flying foxes. At sunset, thousands of these fascinating mammals rise spectacularly as they head off to their feeding grounds – an awesome sight to see!

The Byfield National Park and State Forest abounds with wonderful scenery, rolling

sand dunes, beaches, rainforest-edged creeks and rugged mountains. This area is the exclusive home of the rare Byfield Fern.

Byfield is rich with diversity and forms one of the largest unspoiled eco-systems on the east coast of Australia. The Capricorn Coast’s major waterway, Water Park Creek, is also host to ancient and towering remnant rainforest with many resident native birds and animals.

Rosslyn Bay & Beaches Rosslyn Bay Harbour is situated 7km south of Yeppoon on the Scenic Highway to Emu Park. It is the departure point for transfers to Great Keppel Island and for a range of cruising and bareboat charters around Keppel Bay.

Rosslyn Bay is also home to Keppel Bay Marina, one of the largest marinas in Northern

Queensland. A must-do, whilst visiting the marina, is to take a stroll around the docks and marvel at the luxurious boats moored in the 500 floating marina berths. The marina also has a licensed restaurant where you can enjoy a meal whilst overlooking the water. Rosslyn Bay is a man-made harbour and is a popular local fishing spot. The harbour has a public jetty, boat ramps, Coast Guard and service station.

Nearby Double Head in the Capricorn Coast National Park, is an ancient volcanic plug formed over 70 million years ago and boasts fantastic geological formations. There is a quality bush walk to the summit where you will see stunning panoramic views of the Keppel Islands.

Before departing Rosslyn Bay, stop off at the Fisherman’s Co-op and sample some locally caught reef fish, prawns, bugs and mud crabs.

Causeway Lake – The Causeway Lake is nestled between Kinka and Mulambin Beaches and is the perfect place for a picnic lunch. It is a very shallow and expansive lake which is popular for kayaking and fishing, and also offers great photo opportunities at sunset.

Beautiful Beaches – The Capricorn Coast has many long stretches of beach and secluded bays, all of which have been touched by the legacy of Captain James Cook, who sailed through the bay in the year 1770. Lammermoor, Kinka, Mulambin and Kemp Beaches, Cooee Bay and the Causeway Lake all line the Capricorn Coast, offering many pleasures, wonderful accommodation and so much beauty that you might never want to leave. Yeppoon Main Beach and Emu Park Main Beach are the two patrolled beaches along the coastline, however all beaches offer good swimming conditions, and picnic tables and facilities are provided in most locations.

Just a scenic 20km drive along the coast from Yeppoon, Emu Park is a peaceful coastal village with shady parks and picturesque beaches.

Emu Park is also home to the famous Singing Ship sculpture. Set against a spectacular

coastal vista, the majestic monument commemorates the area’s legacy of the historical explorations of Captain James Cook. A gentle sea breeze produces a musical sound through fluted pipes that will be long remembered.

Once an exclusive beach resort at the turn of the 20th century, Emu Park is now appreciated as an idyllic seaside village with plenty of character. Hosting events like ‘Oktoberfest’ and the ‘Festival of the Wind’, as well as monthly markets, Emu Park has plenty on offer.

Emu Park boasts a full range of shopping choice, including IGA supermarket, pharmacy, bakeries, hairdressers, hardware and more.

Located just to the south of Emu Park is the village of Zilzie. Gaining prominence as one of Queensland's newest destinations, Zilzie has significant new tourism and residential developments underway. Emu Park and Zilzie have a variety of accommodation on offer from quality budget accommodation, to motels and eco resorts.

If you have a boat or just like to wet a line, nearby Coorooman Creek is a popular local fishing spot with a quality boat ramp and pontoon.

From Zilzie, the scenic touring loop heads back to Rockhampton, on the way passing the turn-off to Koorana Crocodile Farm where you’ll see Australia’s own living dinosaurs in the flesh. At Koorana you can take a tour of the farm, hold a baby ‘croc’ and watch the big ’salties’ at feeding time.

The Singing Ship in Emu Park was built in honour of Captain James Cook

to commemorate his visit to the region when exploring the eastern Australian coastline in the year 1770.

Keppel Sands has an idyllic village-style appeal that has changed very little in

comparison to many other coastal destinations. Situated approximately 40km from Yeppoon, Keppel Sands is separated from Zilzie and Emu Park by the mouth of Coorooman Creek which in turn makes it a popular fishing and crabbing location. A popular holiday spot for families, Keppel Sands boasts a hotel, caravan park, motel, local store, two boat ramps and has a lovely picnic area by the beach.

Nearby, is the unique community of Joskeleigh which has a captivating past. Joskeleigh has strong links with the South Sea Islanders who were brought to Queensland in the nineteenth century.

A great spot to learn more about the history is the small Joskeleigh South Pacific Museum. It highlights the role played by the Kanakas, brought out by the 'blackbirders' to work the sugar cane fields as indentured labour. The museum is run by volunteers and is believed to be the only museum of its kind in Queensland. To visit the museum, please call ahead on 07 4934 4854 to make a booking.

HOW TO GET THERE:Access to Keppel Sands and Joskeleigh is by sealed road, the turn-off onto Keppel Sands Road is approximately 27km from Rockhampton or 18km from Emu Park. Keppel Sands also has an all-tide boat ramp at Coorooman Creek, and a tidal ramp at Pumpkin Creek. The Coast Guard is located at South Head with access via Pumpkin Creek.

Keppel Sands is the southern-most community of the Capricorn Coast. This charming township was once known as Sandhills due to the striking sandhills along the beach which can even be seen when travelling along Emu Park Road (from Rockhampton).

The National Trust, and the Heritage Commission, have listed many of the sandstone buildings in Quay Street as a “historical streetscape” unique in Australia. There are many buildings of historical significance, including cathedrals, hotels, hospitals, the supreme courthouse and the old post office.

Another great place to visit is the Rockhampton Heritage Village, a museum where you will learn what it was like to live in the area between 1850 and 1950.

If you’re passionate about history, plan to visit the heritage-listed Archer Park Rail Museum. The museum displays Rockhampton’s rail history and the interactive soundscape ensures it is fun for all ages. The fully restored Purrey Steam Tram is believed to be the only one of its kind in the world.

THE MIGHTY FITZROYRockhampton’s impressive Fitzroy River is another icon you should certainly visit. Take a relaxing walk along the river’s tree-lined boardwalk. Throw in a fishing line and try your hand at catching one of the region’s legendary barramundi. The riverbank is equipped with electric barbeques and picnic facilities so if you fancy cooking up a steak or that barramundi you caught, you can do it yourself, alfresco, right on the river.

The Rockhampton region is one of the few areas in Australia that is fortunate to have an ample water supply. Because of the city's growth, construction began on the Fitzroy River Barrage during the 1960s. The barrage separates the fresh water upstream from the tidal water downstream. The catchment area of the river at the barrage is around 139,000 square kilometres.

GRACEMEREGracemere is located 9km west of Rockhampton. It is home to the largest livestock saleyards in the Southern Hemisphere and is the heart of the Capricorn cattle industry. Experience the dust and drama as thousands of cattle, horses and other livestock are rounded into the saleyards to go under the auctioneer’s hammer each week. Sales are held most week days, with the major cattle and bull sales being held every Friday.

Twenty minutes west of Gracemere on the Capricorn Highway is Mt Hay Gemstone Park. At Mt Hay you can dig for thundereggs or fossick for gemstones. They also offer quality pewter products plus gemstone cutting/polishing services.

THE CAVESLocated just 23km north of Rockhampton, The Caves township is home to some of the most spectacular caves in Queensland. The Capricorn Caves are believed to be the state’s oldest tourist attraction and display incredible above-ground limestone caves formed from an ancient coral reef over 400 million years ago.

The nearby Mount Etna Caves National Park is home to eighty per cent of Australia’s breeding population of female bent-wing bats. From December to February ranger-guided tours are offered to see this spectacular nightly emergence of over 100,000 bats from their roost at feeding time (fees apply). Rocky – Beef Capital of AustraliaAfter your arrival in Rockhampton, it won’t take you long to see that the city has strong county roots and prides itself as being the Beef Capital of Australia!

Six bull statues representing the main breeds of the area are situated throughout

Rockhampton in recognition of Rockhampton’s Beef Capital of Australia title. In addition to the six ‘official’ bulls, keep your eyes peeled for other life-size bulls decorating premises around Rocky. These fun and quirky statues are part of a competition run in conjunction with the tri-annual Beef Australia Expo, which has become an icon event for the Australian beef industry and a major event for the State of Queensland.

1. The Brahman Bull was erected in 2000 at the roundabout on the southern entrance to the city.

2. The Santa Gertrudis Bull is located in the Frank Ford Park, Gladstone Road near the southern entrance to the city. It was erected in 1985.

3. The Droughtmaster Bull is located at the entrance to the airport. This statue was erected in 1994 in conjunction with Beef ’94.

4. The Braford Bull is located on the Bruce Highway in South Rockhampton close to FoodWorks Supermarket. This statue was erected in 1985.

5. The Romangnola Bull, which is located in O’Shannesy Park, South Rockhampton is a relatively new breed of bull in this area. This statue was erected in 1998 to commemorate the Italian Beef Cattle World Congress, which was staged in the city in conjunction with Beef ’97. This is near the Western Highway, which leads to the major beef producing areas of the region.

6. The Brahman Bull is situated in the median strip on the Northern Highway near the Red Hill Homemaker Centre. This statue was erected in 1985 and represents the breed most suitable to this climate.

Mount Morgan

A visit to Mount Morgan is a must. Just an easy 40 minute drive from Rockhampton, this historical gold mining town was established in 1882, and continued to produce gold, silver and copper for 99 years until the mine closed in 1981.

Mount Morgan was considered one of the most important gold discoveries in the world, and

the mine was also believed to be the largest open cut gold mine in the Southern Hemisphere. The town was officially proclaimed in 1890 and in 1898 the railway reached the town.

Europeans had been in the area since the 1850s and a local stockman, William Mackinlay, discovered that the Ironstone Mountain was

gold-bearing around 1870 but kept his discovery secret, hoping to sell his knowledge.

The Morgan family formed a six-man partnership with some Rockhampton businessmen to mine the mountain. The Mount Morgan syndicate lasted until 1886 when the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company was formed.

Primitive quarrying and underground tunnelling was carried out until the 1920s when the gold of Ironstone Mountain was at its richest. Following a short closure after this time, the mine re-opened in 1932 under the new company Mount Morgan Limited. Mount Morgan Limited began open cut mining – creating one of the biggest manmade holes in the Southern Hemisphere for its time.

The latest attraction at Mount Morgan Mine is Michael Durrant’s “World of Fossils” exhibition. Explore the extraordinary world of prehistoric life, from ancient jellyfish, amphibians and giant marine reptiles, right through to dinosaur tracks.

Visit the Mount Morgan Railway Station which was established in 1898 and continued operating for 90 years. In 1974, the Mount Morgan Railway Museum and the Railway water tank were classified by the National Trust of Queensland. Today, the station is home to the town’s Tourist Information Centre.

The Mount Morgan Historical Museum has a collection of memorabilia giving an insight into the town’s mining heritage. Work your way through the hundreds of photographs on hand which depict the boom and bust periods of Mount Morgan.

View the mine from Tipperary Point and see the “Big Stack”. In 1905 the brick chimney was built to distribute fumes from the mine smelters. It stands on a hillside behind the smelters and contains over 700,000 bricks.

Before departing Mount Morgan be sure to visit “The Big Dam”, the last and largest of seven dams built on the Dee River. The Big Dam, as it is locally known, is restocked annually with native fish fingerlings and has always been a favourite picnic spot with a children’s playground and BBQ area.

Be Fish-WiseWe want your fishing experience in the region to be a positive one, so it’s important to be aware there are fishing rules that apply throughout Queensland:

Many fish species are protected by size and possession limits, or may be no-take species (e.g. female mud and blue swimmer crabs).

Pest fish, such as tilapia, must be humanely killed and disposed of, and cannot be kept or returned to the water.

Some fish, such as barramundi and coral reef fish species are off limits at certain times of the year to protect them while they spawn.

Some areas of water, such as 400m within the Fitzroy Barrage area, are completely off limits to all forms of fishing.

Freshwater fishing at a stocked impoundment requires a permit. You can purchase one online at www.fisheries.qld.gov.au or from a local outlet.

Main Beach Yeppoon is 1.3km of swimming beach suitable for all ages and abilities. The beach has excellent access ramps, toilets, electric BBQs and picnic facilities. It is also the focal point for many coastal events, like ‘Tropical Pinefest’ and the annual ‘Australia Day’ celebrations. Dogs are not allowed.

Farnborough Beach is just north of Yeppoon and is part of ‘The Big Dune Surfing Reserve’. The beach offers a good beach break for surfers and hosts the annual ‘Rock Yeppoon Surf Festival’. Dogs are allowed off leash from Bangalee boat ramp south to Barwells Creek with access via Hinz Avenue.

Kemp Beach is a wide sandy beach with a rocky outcrop called ‘The Bluff’, which has excellent lookouts where you can often spot turtles and dolphins in the waters below. Kemp Beach has BBQs, picnic tables and toilets. Dogs are permitted at designated times.

Emu Park’s Main Beach is a quiet beach with calm waters. The beach has shady picnic facilities and is close to shops. Dogs are not allowed.

Beach Guide

Five Rocks & Nine Mile Beaches, which adjoin Byfield National Park, have good surfing and fishing and are only accessible by 4WD. The nearby Five Rocks visitor area has camping, picnic tables, toilets and cold showers. Dogs are not permitted on any beach adjacent to Byfield National Park.

Keppel Sands Main Beach is 1.3km long and faces east. The beach is backed by the small Keppel Sands settlement. Swimming and fishing is best at high tide.

DOGS OFF LEASH Dogs are permitted off leash on all beaches before 8am and after 4pm. This excludes public holidays and weekends. Dogs are not permitted on any beach adjacent to Byfield National Park.

Nestled on the coast, 175km north of Rockhampton, the fishing village of Stanage Bay really is a place to escape. Easily accessible from the Bruce Highway, the unsealed drive to Stanage Bay takes you through diverse countryside, eucalypt forests, creeks begging to be picnicked by and swum in, cattle stations with cows wandering casually over the track, and wetlands with enough birds to keep the fussiest traveller happy. There’s as much or as little to do as you like, get into some of the best fishing on the Capricorn Coast. Rock climbing, birdwatching, swimming or just relaxing with beautiful vistas to accompany you.

Stanage, also known as Stanage Bay, was Captain Cook’s second landing in Queensland. He named the water ways Thirsty Sound, when he came to shore in search of fresh water but none could be found, thus the name remains today.

Stanage has three suburbs – Alligator Point (Beverly Hills) – great views and beach access, rentals, boat hire, tyre repair, day charter fishing trips; Alligator Bay (Happy Valley) – beautiful beach and rentals; Plumtree (Paradise) – boat ramp, coastguard, rentals, beach, creeks, marine centre (tackle shop) boat storage, store, pub, fuel, post outlet, public phone, Endeavour park, public toilets, camping.

Mud Crab season (Dec – July), Jew fish (Oct – March), Salmon (June – Sept), Mackerel (June – Sept), Barra (mostly winter), Cod/Bream etc. Estuary – deep sea fishing – all year weather permitting. Boat ramp is two lane concrete and usually accessible half tide in or half tide out depending on the size tides and your boat size.

HOW TO GET THEREFrom Rockhampton, drive along the Bruce Highway for 75km, then turn right onto the Stanage Bay road just past Kunwarara. Drive another 100km along this mostly unsealed road, which is accessible by 2WD except during very wet weather (check before you go).

The spectacular white sandstone cliffs of the steep-sided gorge, with its narrow, vibrantly-coloured and lush side-gorges, shelter remnant rainforest plants. Carnarvon Gorge is a place that you can explore over an extended period of time or at short intervals. The Capricorn Region is one of two national centres of arts and culture, after being chosen from many national applicants for a three year pilot project, putting the arts and culture at the centre of regional planning and development.

Since its inception in 2012, Creative Capricorn has commissioned new work for the region

including visual art, films, new exhibitions and has invested in developments at the Walter Reid Cultural Centre on the corner of East and Derby Streets. This Centre hosts 14 community arts organisations and a number of professional companies in residence. Music, dance, theatre, film and all forms of visual art are on offer as participatory experiences in the region.

Take a walk along Rockhampton’s Quay Street and marvel at the Fitzroy River and all it has to offer. Three works of public art, commissioned by Creative Capricorn, were installed to mark the

significance of the river to the region. Start your trail opposite Customs House and take a short walk downstream (and back in time), ending with a work by local group, Capricorn Arts Mob – a series of carved memory poles signifying the importance of the river to Traditional Owners, the Darumbal people (Cnr Stanley & Quay Streets).

Every August, the Village Festival, Yeppoon becomes a highlight of the region’s cultural calendar with a host of local, national and international contemporary music acts on offer. The 2013 Festival saw Clare Bowditch and international jazz group and ARIA Award winner ‘The Idea of North’ strut the stages in Yeppoon.

Visit community museums and galleries like the Mill Gallery in Yeppoon, which host monthly exhibitions and community cultural events. Another creative hub is the award winning Nob Creek Pottery in the Byfield Rainforest and if you happen to be in Yeppoon on the first Sunday of the month, don’t miss out on the Figtree Markets. Art lovers in Rockhampton are also in for a treat at the Rockhampton Art Gallery. Established in 1967, the gallery houses the finest collection of mid-twentieth century Australian art in regional Queensland.

The Gallery presents a vibrant range of educational and artistic programs, workshops and events for temporary, travelling and permanent collection exhibitions. Programs include guided tours for education and other groups, artist and guest speaker talks, practical workshops and art activities developed for toddlers through to adults.

Rockhampton to Yeppoon(35 minute drive)

Travel along the Bruce Highway to the Yeppoon turn-off and as you head to the coast you'll see Mt Jim Crow and Mt Hedlow. These are just two of the many volcanic plugs which dot the landscape, testament to the area's violent geological past.

Keppel Bay Marina and Rosslyn Bay(15 minute drive from Yeppoon)

Rosslyn Bay is the departure point for trips to Great Keppel Island. Freedom Fast Cats offer ferry transfers to the island. Here you'll also find Keppel Bay Marina, which boasts a seaside café and restaurant.

Great Keppel IslandTake a welcome diversion across to Great Keppel Island. The island is well worth a day trip and there's a variety of accommodation if you wish to stay longer.

Emu Park(15 minute drive from Yeppoon)

Along the Scenic Highway lie 13 of Queensland's most beautiful beaches, including Kinka Beach and Mulambin Beach. Take the coastal walk at Kemp Beach for magnificent views across the sparkling ocean to the Keppel Islands. Emu Park is also home to the Singing Ship, a soaring white sculpture on the headland, designed as a monument to Captain Cook.

Koorana Crocodile Farm(20 minute drive from Emu Park)

The excitement of seeing crocodile feeding is something you won't match anywhere. From February to Easter you may also see baby crocs hatch! This is a working crocodile farm open to visitors between 10am and 3pm, with tours at 10.30am and 1pm. A perfect spot for lunch – croc burgers are the house specialty! It's a truly fascinating experience. Evening dining and spotlight tours are also available for groups.

St Christopher ’s Chapel(25 minute drive from Koorana Crocodile Farm)

Built by the 542 Engineering Ship and Shore, Battalion, U.S. Army in 1943, St Christopher’s is an open air chapel located in Nerimbera. You will pass the chapel turn-off on your journey back to Rockhampton. It is believed that this chapel is the only one of its kind in the world.

Tropic of Capricorn Spire(Gladstone Road, Rockhampton)

Rockhampton straddles the Tropic of Capricorn and the Spire marks the spot where you leave the temperate zone and enter the tropics a great photo opportunity for visitors.

Archer Park Rail Museum (Archer Street, 5 minute drive from the Tropic of Capricorn Spire)

Magnificently restored, the Archer Park Rail Museum brings history alive as you learn about the Purrey Steam Tram, which once served Rockhampton’s streets. The ‘talking statues’ will give you all the details.

Rockhampton Art Gallery (Victoria Parade, 3 minute drive from Archer Park)

You’ll be surprised by this regional gallery which offers a fascinating range of touring exhibitions by local, national and international artists.

Historic Quay Street(10 minute walk from Rockhampton Art Gallery)

Facing the Fitzroy River Parkland and boardwalk, Quay Street is the longest National Trust heritage street in Australia. Rich in architectural splendour, stroll past the Rockhampton Customs House and then further south and see one of Rockhampton’s largest historic warehouses – Walter Reid Cultural Centre.

Dreamtime Cultural Centre (Bruce Highway, 10 minute drive north from the city)

This unique centre is on Darambal land, nestled amidst 30 hectares of natural bush. Here you’ll learn the history of the region's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities (allow two hours for the tour). The centre also showcases Indigenous artefacts and displays. A must-see is the unique film about the tribes of the Carnarvon Gorge and their ancient rock art. Tours are 10.30am and 1pm Mon – Fri.

Rockhampton Heritage Village & Visitor Information Centre(Boundary Road, 2 minute drive north from Dreamtime Cultural Centre)

Step back in time at this friendly township museum showcasing the rich, colourful history

of the Rockhampton district from 1850 – 1950. Wonderful displays of restored buildings, vehicles, machinery, doll and clock collections, plus friendly farm animals, all set in beautiful gardens. Open 9am – 4pm daily.

ROCKHAMPTON’S NATURAL ENCOUNTERS TRAIL

Mt Hay Gemstone Tourist Park (20 minute drive from The Spire Visitor Information Centre, Gladstone Road)

Mt Hay was once a rumbling volcano and is now home to thundereggs, a volcano’s birthstone. Here you can take a guided tour and fossick for your very own geo-treasure.

Rockhampton Botanic Gardens and Zoo(Spencer Street, 20 minute drive from Mt Hay)

A relaxing oasis within the city limits, Rockhampton’s 143-year-old Botanic Gardens, considered one of the best gardens of its kind in Australia, have amazing tropical plants. The Zoo – Wildlife at its best. Discover more than 50 species of native and exotic animals in their natural surroundings, while being entertained with feeding shows daily. Entry is FREE. Open 8am – 4.30pm.

Kershaw Gardens(Bruce Highway, 15 minute drive from Botanic Gardens and Zoo)

On the northern bank of the Fitzroy River, this unique park features native plants and a replica bush hut hidden away in the foliage. Walking trails take you through the scented garden, with spectacular waterfalls making this a peaceful oasis.

Mt Archer Environmental Park(Pilbeam Drive, 15 minute drive from Kershaw Gardens)

Reward yourself with some spectacular views of the city from the summit of Mt Archer. It’s an easy drive to the lookout where you can picnic at one of the excellent barbeque areas or take a short walk along one of the marked trails.

Capricorn Caves(Olsens Caves Road, 25 minute drive from Mt Archer)

These incredible above-ground caves, discovered in 1882, offer daily tours. Your guide will reveal amazing limestone formations, and the more



adventurous can explore by candlelight. The Summer Solstice – mid December to mid January – is a special natural event not to be missed. Sunlight penetrates deep in the Belfry Cave to create spectacular visual effects. The caves have wheelchair access.

Mt Etna Park Bat Cleft(5 minute drive from Capricorn Caves)

From December to February, a visit to the Bat Cleft within Mt Etna Caves National Park is a must. The dusk flight of thousands of endangered bent-wing bats is a fascinating spectacle. The bats are no bigger than your thumb and this is the ONLY place in the world where you can witness this natural event. Enjoy an evening meal at the nearby Caves Pub while you wait for the skies to dim! Tours depart from the Caves township.

HISTORIC MOUNT MORGAN TRAIL

Mount Morgan Railway Museum & Visitor Information Centre(Railway Parade, 35 minute drive from Rockhampton)

Don’t miss this excellent example of the importance of Rail History in Mount Morgan.

The Railway Museum was built in 1898 and gives visitors an insight into the historic buildings, rail memorabilia and an opportunity to ride a Fettler’s Trolley. Step into a restored railway carriage and watch a 3D screening of the old history of the ‘rack’ system, used for hauling steam trains up the steep inclines of the Razorback Mountain in the 1800s. Open 9am – 4pm daily.

Private Victor Stanley Jones Suspension Bridge (Byrnes Parade, 2 minutes after the Mount Morgan Railway Museum)

The Dee River, flowing through Mount Morgan, was once lined with a number of Mount Morgan’s famous Swinging Bridges, with the first constructed in the 1890s. Six of these unique bridges were constructed over the Dee River; built to ensure easy access between the town and mine site, even during times of flood. Sadly, no originals remain today. A replica can be found, however, across the river connecting Byrne’s Parade to East Street; giving those who cross a feel for the old mining days.

An information board is also found at the location where the last original stood – found on Tipperary Road.

Mount Morgan State High School(2 minute drive from Private Victor Stanley Jones Suspension Bridge)

The Mount Morgan State High School was erected in 1908 to teach the technical skills and trades of mining. The college became a high school in 1912, when the demand for skilled miners decreased. The high school was Queensland’s first high school and had 127 pupils. The State High School still operates today on the corner of Central and Dee Streets.

Mount Morgan Historical Museum (Morgan Street, 2 minute drive from High School)

Located in the main street of Mount Morgan, the Mount Morgan Historical Museum has an extensive collection of classic pieces and photographs tracing the history of Mount Morgan from its early pioneering days through to the gold rush and settlement period. Open 9am – 4pm daily.

The Mount Morgan Masonic Temple (Gordon Street, 5 minute drive from Historical Museum)

This 1903 Masonic Temple demonstrates the growth and prominence of Mount Morgan in the early 20th century and the spread of Freemasonry throughout Queensland. The temple was erected for 1,500 pounds by the Newman Brothers of Rockhampton, and can be found on Gordon Street.

Arthur Timms Lookout (Pattison Street, 5 minute drive from Masonic Temple)

From the Arthur Timms Lookout you get a spectacular view of the town and the mine that was once a mountain. Looking north over the top of town, you can see the Burnett Highway cross the Dee River and head off for Rockhampton.

Turn westward until you encounter the Big Stack. Completed in 1905, it stands 71 metres tall and is said to contain three-quarters of a million bricks. To the left of the Big Stack is the lake which is the site of what was the open-cut mine. Instead of that lake, try to picture the mountain of gold that once stood there – Ironstone Mountain, the original Mount Morgan. You can experience a tour of the mine site with TMC Tours.

Mount Morgan Cemetery (5 minute drive from Aurthur Timms Lookout)

The town’s cemetery reflects the hard times and numerous disasters that have plagued Mount Morgan over the years. Stories of industrial accidents and disease outbreaks litter the rows of tombstones. The Linda Memorial, located in the cemetery, was erected in 1909 to commemorate the 26 men who died in the mine between 1894 and 1909. The cemetery also contains the Chinese Heung Lew or prayer oven. The cemetery is located 2km south of the town centre, just off Coronation Drive.

More Time?Before departing Mount Morgan be sure to visit “The Big Dam”, the last and largest of seven dams built on the Dee River. The Big Dam, as it is locally known, has always been a favourite picnic area.

BY RAIL Queensland Rail’s Traveltrain operates services daily to Rockhampton from Brisbane. Services are also available to Cairns and extend west to
