Así se forma 2: Reciprocal constructions

English uses the phrases each other and one another to express reciprocal actions: They love each other/one another. Spanish uses the pronouns nos and se, accompanied by the corresponding verb forms, to express reciprocal or mutual actions.


Linda y Manuel se llaman mucho.

Claudia, Juana y yo nos conocemos bien.

Linda and Manuel call each other a lot.

Claudia, Juana and I know one another well.

Práctica: Reciprocal constructions


1. ¿Cómo se comunican? ¿Se llaman por teléfono? ¿Se mandan mensajes eléctrónicos o mensajes de texto por teléfono?

2. ¿Se encuentran frecuentemente? ¿Dónde?

3. ¿Se cuentan (tell) sus problemas? ¿Se cuentan secretos?

4. ¿Se ayudan con sus estudios?

5. ¿Qué cosas se prestan? ¿Dinero, ropa, CD…?

6. ¿Se hacen reír (make each other laugh)?

7. ¿Se enojan (get upset) a veces también?

Piensa en un/a amigo/a y contesta las siguientes preguntas sobre ese/a amigo/a y tú.

Notice that with reciprocal “each other” expressions the subject and verb must be plural:

Los dos hombres se dan la mano.

Or

Eduardo y yo nos damos la mano.

Se abrazan Se miran o se ven

Se besan

Se llaman por teléfono Se aman

Así se dice: Algunas profesiones


Use “médico/a” when referring to the profession:I need a doctor. “Necesito un médico.”

“Doctor/a” is a title:Te presento al doctor Gómez.
