Refinance Debt

Q. Can an existing conventional commercial loan be refinanced with an SBA loan?

Over the last 12 years, the Capitol 5K has raised $725,000 through sponsorships, registrations and the Charity Challenge Raffle. The 12th annual Capitol 5K held on Friday, June 19th was a perfect evening for running. Three hundred runners and volunteers came out to support 22 Greater Lansing charities that benefited from the proceeds generated from the Capitol 5K and the Charity Challenge Raffle.

“The Lansing area is incredibly fortunate to have so many outstanding organizations that do so much to enrich the quality of life in our community,” said Ed Harden, President of Capitol National Bank. “Our employees at Capitol National Bank have always considered our involvement in supporting local schools and charities as a vital part of our role as the areas only community bank.”

The best and most unique part of this event is that 100% of the proceeds from raffle ticket sales go to the charity and the purchaser has a chance to win great prizes! Organizations with the most tickets sold on their behalf are eligible to receive additional monies from race proceeds.

As a result of the raffle, the following charities were presented with a portion of the $37,530 generated from the 2015 event: Capitol Area Humane Society, Ele’s Place, Everett High School, Families Against Narcotics, Firecracker Foundation, Greater Lansing Food Bank, Haslett Band, Haslett Girl Scout Troop 130, Haven House, Junior Achievement, Lansing Catholic High School, Lansing City Rescue Mission, Lansing

Spartan Youth Organization, Lewton Elementary School, Red Cross, Shared Pregnancy, St. Gerard School, St. Mary School-Williamston, St. Thomas Aquinas School and St. Vincent Catholic Charities.

COMMUNITY CORNER

A. Yes, if the existing loan meets one of the following criteria:

• The new SBA loan’s monthly payment must be at least 10% less than the current conventional loan’s payment. SBA wants to ensure the loan funding provides a substantial benefit when refinancing debt and 10% is the minimum improvement required.

• If the current conventional loan has a balloon payment at any time over the life of the loan, then the loan is automatically eligible for SBA financing. SBA loans are fully amortizing with no

balloon payments, so SBA considers any loan with a balloon payment to be eligible for SBA financing.

• Any revolving line of credit is eligible for SBA financing as most lines of credit mature with an outstanding balance owing.

Steve Pricco, Capitol National Bank’s Director of Government Guaranteed Lending, has 20 years of experience working with SBA programs to properly structure and fund government guaranteed loans.

Protect your Business’s Privacy and Prevent Fraud

Capitol National Bank recommends that you implement these computer security tools and practices to help prevent and detect fraud:

Online Banking

Call the bank if you have any questions or notice anything “strange” while accessing Online Banking.

Utilize a stand-alone device for Online Banking that is not used for web-surfing or email.

Establish Online Banking alerts to notify you when a transaction has been initiated or system change has been made. To establish an alert, in the Options Tab, select Alerts and Edit Event Alerts. Check the box next to item you want to create an alert for and click Submit.

Sign into Online Banking daily to review transactions and immediately notify the bank of any unauthorized or suspicious transactions.

Prohibit the use of shared usernames and passwords for Online Banking.

Verify that your Online Banking session is secure by ensuring that “https” appears in the address line of the browser.

Never leave a computer unattended while using Online Banking and always sign off after you complete your banking.

Never access Online Banking, other financial services or brokerage information through unsecured Wi-Fi internet hotspots (i.e., internet cafes, public libraries, hotels).

Avoid using automatic login features that save usernames and passwords for Online Banking.

Other Good Computing Practices

Use a different password for each website that you access.

Never share username and password information with third-party providers.

Install and update commercial anti-virus software and security patches on all computer systems.

If you outsource IT to a third-party, ensure you are comfortable with their qualifications.

Consider installing spyware detection programs.

Be suspicious of emails purporting to be from a financial institution, government agency or other agency requesting account information, account verification or access credentials such as usernames, passwords, PIN codes and similar information. If you are not certain of the source, do not click on any links.

Limit system administrative rights on users’ workstations.

Regularly and properly destroy your computer file history.

Passwords are used for virtually everything we do online. Passwords protect our identities on websites, discussion groups, e-mail accounts and more. Many family computers with multiple user accounts employ passwords. They are also used for bank transactions and making secure purchases. With all of this sensitive data at stake, creating good passwords is very important to prevent identity theft. Passwords are the main defense against computer hackers. Hackers typically try to break into a computer or secure account by guessing passwords one at a time. Automated programs can also be used to repeatedly guess passwords from a database of common words or other information. Even the best passwords can be defeated with enough time, skill, and computer processing power – but a strong password is vital to buy time, prevent attacks by less determined

The Importance of Passwords

hackers, and send up red flags that can help catch such fraudsters in the act.Secure Password Do’sMost passwords are case sensitive. This means that capitalization counts: "mypassword" is different from "MyPassword" (neither of which are good passwords, by the way!) Use this to your advantage by using mixed-case typing in your passwords. Capitalize the first letter, every other letter, or some similar, memorable arrangement. Keyboard symbols such as ampersand, pound, percent and others are allowed in almost all passwords, and are very unlikely to be guessed, so use them when possible. Always use at least six, but ideally eight or more characters in a password, with at least one number. If possible, use a password that can be typed quickly and would be difficult for someone nearby to spy on. The “ultimate” password is probably a random sequence of letters, numbers, and symbols, but make sure it’s a sequence you can remember! If any system or account you access has a default password provided by that system, change it as soon as possible.Secure Password Don’tsThe most essential mistake to avoid in creating a password is using the word password. This is a very common password and very easy to break. Avoid using any word found in the dictionary, since automatic hacking programs draw on these. Don’t use any version of your network login, especially not reversed. Don’t use names (first, middle, last, nicknames, pet's names), birth dates, or any other common information about yourself that might be learned in casual interactions or stolen by someone

willing to snatch your mail. Dates (no matter what format) and sequences of keystrokes (such as 12345) are also easily hacked. Remember that any rule that applies to your password also applies to your password recovery question, which should be something no one should guess – and, like your password, something you should never reveal to others. Finally, don’t write down your passwords! Passwords kept near computers make easy targets for thieves, who can write the passwords down without being detected.Creating Secure PasswordsThe best password is one that you can remember easily without prompting. Of course, you should use a different password for every secure account so that hacking one will not compromise the others. That can add up to a lot of passwords! Here are some ways to create strong passwords every time:Use the first number or letter of each line from a page in your favorite book, poem, or song including a scrambled page number, for example: 4bhabjpb7"Strike" the keyword randomly several times. Change some letters in the resulting text to vowels to make a memorable sequence, and some letters to similar numbers: 1ffw1od.Use “words” spelled incorrectly, with certain sounds changed to their numerical equivalent: H8work! or @h0me2dayUse a random password generator: d6wmk8sd0http://www.surveillance-video.com/password-jan-2010.html
