The A, B, Cs of Personal Fall ProtectionCapital Safety offers a complete array ofpassive and active fall arrest systems. The basics of every personalfall arrest system can be described asthe ABCs of fall arrest.

ANCHORAGEAnchorage means a securepoint of attachment (structure)for the fall arrest system. Thetype of anchorage varies withthe industry, the job beingperformed, the type of installationand the structure available. Theanchorage connector provides ameans of attaching the system tothe anchorage.

BODY SUPPORTFull body harnesses provide aconnection point on the workerfor the personal fall arrest system.Depending on the application, theycan be used as part of a system toprotect the worker from falling andto limit the extent of potentialinjury in case of a fall.

CONNECTORSConnectors are devices usedto connect the workers fullbody harness to the anchoragesystem. Connectors includelanyards, snap hooks, karabiners, deceleration devices and specialtysystems such as self retractinglifelines, ladder climbing systems, vertical lifelines and rope grabs.

DESCENT/RESCUERescue and retrieval of a fallenworker is a required componentof any Fall Protection Program.

TOWER CLIMBINGFall protection challenges Towers serve a variety of purposes, including carrying electrical

transmission lines and supporting communications networks. Thenumber of towers erected is increasing each year and are often inremote wilderness areas. These towers must be serviced and ac-cessed. Whether workers are climbing to do maintenance work orerecting the tower itself, safety assurance along with comfort andmobility must be taken into consideration. Workers up on towers forlengthy periods of time can experience fatigue and need to be ableto rely on top of the line fall protection.

Workers often find themselves climbing and moving from one area of

the tower to another which may present some dangerous scenarios.

Along with the obvious danger of working at height, towers exposerescuers to hazards they may not normally encounter on the ground. The hazards on an electrical transmission line tower involve not justthe transmission lines themselves, but also the minimum air distancesaround those lines, and equipment must be kept clear of voltagelines.

Additionally hazardous, tower rescues can include workers involvedwith building or maintaining a tower or worker who may have beeninjured or suffered a sudden illness. Rescuers must be sufficientlymobile to deal with all types of emergency situations.

    POLE CLIMBINGFall protection challenges

Pole climbing workers may be required to climblight poles and electrical poles, both wood andsteel. In most cases, these situations can bephysically demanding. Workers often climb atgreat height and have minimal equipment attheir disposal. In addition, finding a comfort-able position to stand or rest is often difficultparticularly when weather conditions are notideal.

Using proper techniques, safety equipment andeffectively ascending and descending polescan ensure that the handling, transportation, installation, and removal of utility poles is safeand efficient.

Poles are built in many different shapes andsizes. In addition they can be constructed fromsteel, wood or even concrete. Often thesepoles have some sort of climbing structure, butthese also vary from typical ladder structuresto off-set rungs.

    LADDER CLIMBINGFall protection challenges

Working on and around ladders is hazardous.Ladders are a major source of injury amongUtility workers and many are serious enough torequire time off the job - or even worse, death.

Safety and security are top of mind when climb-ing fixed ladders, poles, towers, tanks, into andout of manholes. Climbing ladders can be

required in almost any application where a worker must climb to get to a specific spot or platform. In most cases there is no anchoring position and once a worker gets from point A to point B they have some type of platform on which they must conduct work. Workers require freedom of movement and unhampered mobility.

The ladder safety system is much safer than aladder cage which is out of date, treacherous, rudimentary, and provides a false sense ofsecurity.

    AERIAL LIFT WORKFall protection challenges

Workers confined to working on aerial lifts requirethe use of attachment equipment to restrain themfrom bucket ejection. These workers can be facedwith many hazardous conditions such as lack ofmobility, collision with road users and weather.Dangerous practices can result in a worker beingpropelled out of a lift.

Workers require mobility but must use fallprotection to stay connected. Fall protection mustbe light, comfortable, mobile and compact so itdoes not get in the way while working in tight

spaces for lengthy periods of time.Arc flashes can also occur when utility workersdeal with live wires and potential explosions.Depending on whether lines are energised or notwill reflect the type of protection required.

    ELECTRICAL/TRANSFORMER WORKFall protection challenges

Electrical transformers are used to reduce voltage for variousday-to-day electrical applications. Improper use, maintenanceand neglect can cause heavy losses to businesses as well as tothe environment.

Understanding and controlling hazardous energy sources in theworkplace is critical to remaining safe while performing manytasks each day. Workers must understand the various typesof energy sources and proper use of lockout-tagout situations.

Contact with or dangerous proximity to high voltage electricalsystems can cause serious injury or even death. It is criticalin these situations to use extreme caution when working onor near high voltage electrical lines or equipment particularlywhen dealing with; shock hazards, electric arc hazards,

minimum approach distances, electrical conductivity concerns, tight/confined spaces and fall clearance issues.

For this type of work in remote areas, transportation of equipment requires fall protection to be lightweight, portable, and compact.

    PLANT/FACILITY WORKFall protection challenges

Whether workers find themselves employedin large scale factories, treatment plants orgeneration stations, compelling hazards areassociated with safety challenges whencompleting corrective and preventativemaintenance, overhauls, outages, andgeneral repair projects.

Maintenance and general contractors findthemselves working in versatile environments, facing different challenges day to day. Fallprotection must be mobile, lightweight, portableand modular in order to adapt to different

    applications.

Workers can find themselves on tanks, ladders, platforms, rooftops, scaffold or girders. Fallprotection requirements in these circumstancesneed to accommodate holes in walking orworking surfaces, poorly secured ladders, faulty scaffolds, untidy or congested workareas, obstructed walkways, slippery floors andmany other potentially dangerous situations.

NO-TANGLE DESIGNDonning a harness incorrectly can mean the equipment maynot work properly. The patented DeltaPad and the Exotexclusive wrap-around X-design make these harnesses easyto don and comfortable to wear with a wide spread over the

    shoulders to prevent irritating abrasion.

Colour CODED SIZINGColour coded sizing allows worker to quickly and easilychoose the harness that will work best for their size.

ARC FLASH STANDARDArc ash harnesses are made from a material such as 31kNnylon or Nomex/Kevlarto meet the requirements ofapplications such as utility work that require protection againststatic build-up. Options include non-sparking PVC coatedhardware and leather insulators behind metal hardware thatreduce static energy transfer. Meets ASTM F887-05 40 cal/cm2arc ash standard.

ADJUSTING POINTSWhether you wear a harness four hours a day orfourteen hours, it needs to t right for safetyand comfort. Harnesses with adjusting points on

the legs, waist, chest and shoulders allow for abetter t.

PELVIC SUPPORTAn added sub-pelvic strap providesadditional support, security and comfortfor the user. Properly positioned, it betterdistributes forces during a fall.

BACK D-RINGThe fall arrest point must be located on theback, positioned between the shoulder blades. No matter what additional anchor points areincluded on a harness, it must always includethe dorsal attachment.

STITCHINGDouble box stitching provides maximum strengthand durability. Sewn-in quality you can trust.

LEG STRAPSDepending on worker preference, leg strapsfasteners may be available in differentstyles, including:

    Pass-through buckle Quick-connect buckle

BOOK STYLE LABELSDBI-SALA harnesses feature book-stylelabels that put product and inspectioninformation at the workers ngertips.Pages may include sizing, operatinginstructions, inspection log, warninglabels and compliance information.Promotes safe inspection, complianceand safety.

What to look for in a Full Body Harness

Engineered for QualityThe DBI-SALA reputation for qualityprovides peace of mind in selecting a fullbody harness. Quality in a harness meansmaximum comfort, freedom of movement

and ease of use. Industry innovationssuch as the spring-loaded stand-up backD-ring and the No-Tangle DeltaPaddemonstrate DBI-SALA engineeringand ingenuity.

A full body harness is designed withstraps to fasten around the user inorder to distribute fall arrest forcesover at least the upper thighs, pelvis, chest and shoulders. Thismoves the impact of a fall from the

internal organs to the major boneand muscle groups around thepelvis. The full body harnessincludes a means for attachingto the other components of a fallarrest system. All DBI-SALAharnesses meet strict CEstandards.

DOUBLE LEG LANYARDS OR100% TIE-OFF LANYARDS(Two lanyards that are connectedat one end.) This style of lanyardis used to provide 100% tie-off.It allows you to stay protectedwhile you move from one locationto another.

    Innovation for Ease-of-useand Durability

DBI-SALA is known as an innovator whocan design and build the products youneed for all your fall protection challenges. Our lanyards have features that have enhancedworker productivity and safety. Available withover 20 different Connectors to fit the application,DBI-SALA lanyards promote safety and enhanceproductivity.

    DBI-SALA

    SHOCKABSORBINGLANYARDS

SHOCK ABSORBING LANYARDSLanyards used for fall protection mustinclude a shock absorber to dissipatethe energy of the fall, limiting theforces on the body of the falling worker.

RESTRAINT LANYARDSRope or web lanyards withoutshock absorbers may be used forapplications that require positioningor restraint of a worker where thereis no possibility of a fall.

Lanyards are flexible lines with a connector at each end used to connectthe anchorage to the body support of a fall protection system. Lanyards areusually connected to the back D-ring for fall arrest, located between

the shoulder blades and ideally should be anchored above the worker tominimise fall distance. The worker should not walk too far from the overheadanchorage or a swing fall may occur.

    SPECIALTY SHOCK ABSORBING LANYARDS:

KevlarLanyardsKevlar is a special material that is safe forhigh temperature environments. Its chartemperature is over 400C, specially for useby welders or workers in foundry.

RETRACTABLE LANYARDSRetracts automatically to t theworking area. A unique alternativeto elasticated lanyards.

Arc Flash LanyardsArc ash lanyards are made from specialisedmaterials and arc tested to 40 cal/cm2 to meet theASTM F887-05 standard.

    SHOCK ABSORBING LANYARDS

SHOCK ABSORBERLanyards designed for use as partof a personal fall arrest systemmust contain an energy absorbingunit that will limit the force on theworker to below 6kN with up to a 4mfree fall.

What to look for in a Shock Absorbing Lanyard

WEBBINGWebbing is an important factor in the durability and safety of the lanyard. You want to ensure that the webbing is strong enough to endure rough useand exposure to sunlight and other elements without tearing or fraying.Kevlarwebbing is used for specialty applications such as welding thatrequire re resistance. Webbing may also be coated with polyurethane toprovide protection again grease, oil, dirt and grime.

CONNECTOR/HOOKThe popular DBI-SALAsnap hook allows one-handed usewith no pinching of thumbs orngers. Lanyards can also be tted

with larger snap hooks or karabinersfor connection to larger anchorages.

LENGTHStandard lanyard length is 2m. A lanyard should belong enough to be user-friendly, but kept as short aspossible to minimise the free fall distance.Knots should never be tied in lanyards to reducetheir length as this can reduce the strength by 50%.

IMPACT INDICATORIf the lanyard has been used to arrest a fall or if theenergy absorber has been deployed, the lanyardmust be retired immediately. An impact indicatorgives easy visual reference of an activated shock.

i-Safe(coming soon)Every DBI-SALA lanyard now comes with i-Safe,the Intelligent Safety System that incorporates RFIDand web-enabled communications technologies, providing you with the ability to centrally trackinspections, control eld inventory and managecritical safety information.

Anchorage connectors are greatlydependent on the specific requirements

of the purchaser, including the typeof attachment, the environment andthe connecting system. DBI-SALA offersthe most complete line of anchorageconnectors available, rigorously tested toensure the strength you need. This meansyou can always find the best product to fityour requirements.

AnchoragesAn anchorage is a secure pointof attachment for the fall arrestsystem. The anchorage must becapable of supporting a loadof at least 10kN or shall bedesigned, installed and used aspart of a complete personal fallarrest system which maintains asafety factor of at least 2.

Anchorages may be certified(designed or engineered on sitefor fall protection) or non-certified(beams, trusses or other suitablystrong structures). Certifiedanchorages should be identifiedwith paint or special markingsand kept on a site location list.

Anchorage ConnectorsAnchorage connectors provide ameans of attaching the system tothe anchorage. These vary widelydepending on application. Someof the common types are anchorslings, roof anchors, beam clamps, rail sliders, trolleys, eyebolts and

    shepherd hooks.

What to look for inan Anchorage ConnectorAnchorage connectors are sold by:

What they connect to (steel, concrete, roofs) Whether they are fixed or mobile Whether they are permanent or portable

Experienced Capital Safety technicians can provideguidance on which anchorage connector will bestfit your applications.

TestingAnchorage connectors are a critical part of a fallprotection system. They must be tested to ensurethat they have the strength to withstand thetremendous forces that can be generated by a

fall. Capital Safety anchorage connectors arerigorously tested both in-house and by independent,non-profit testing and certification companies.

VACUUM ANCHORSWith a Vacuum Anchor Systemat your workers side, they cananchor to virtually any smooth,non-porous surface simply byipping a switch and waitingfor the green light. So whetherthey need to work on a tank, vessel or large steel structure,

theyll always be able toquickly, easily put themselveswhere they need to bewithout putting themselvesin danger.

Self-lockingSnap hooks and karabiners used in fall protection or res-cue operations must be double-locking. Non-locking hooksmust not be used for fall protection because of the dangerof rolloutthe accidental disengagement of a connectorfrom whatever it is attached to.

One-handed OperationSnap hooks should be simple to operate in order to ensurethat they are used properly, even when wearing gloves.

MaterialsDBI-SALA snap hooks and karabiners are made of hightensile alloy steel or aluminium.

StandardsSnap hooks and karabiners used for fall protection mustconform to EN362, have double security and be automaticgate closing.

    Industry Leaders

DBI-SALA has been the industry leader inthe development of reliable, versatileself retracting lifelines (SRLs). DBI-SALASRL innovations include the patentedSealed SRL and the impact indicator, animportant safety innovation which has nowbeen widely adopted across the industry.

An SRL is a flexible lifelineattached to a mechanism thatallows it to extend and retract

under slight tension when theuser moves away from andtoward the device. This enablesa user to work safely whilemoving within a recommendedarea at normal speeds.

    DBI-SALA

    SELFRETRACTINGLIFELINES

SRLs can be used in a variety of situations, but areprimarily used to provide movement and protection ofusers in a vertical work area. SRLs can also be usedwith a horizontal lifeline to improve the overall mobilityof the system, both vertically and horizontally.

What to look for in an SRL

LINESRL lines can be made from cable, webbing orsynthetic rope. Cable is considered for rugged, outdoor applications or where the line may bein touch with sharp objects. Synthetic ropeor web line is often preferred by utility work-ers because they are lightweight, compact, and help reduce electrical conductivity andsparking in potentially explosive atmospheres.Stainless steel offers the ultimate in corrosionresistance, reliability and longevity.

IMPACT INDICATORSRLs should be inspected before each useand monthly by the customers designatedcompetent person. Inspections are madeeasier with an impact indicator thatimmediately shows an orange or red bandif the SRL has been loaded or has arresteda fall. All SRLs should be removed fromservice following the arrest of a fall and if theimpact indicator is visible. In most cases theunit will have to be returned to an authorisedservice centre for servicing or replacement.

SNAP HOOKThe snap hook affects ease and speed ofconnection. A swivel snap hook providesversatility to allow the SRL to be easilyconnected to a wide variety of anchorages, making it adaptable to different workstructures. The patented DBI-SALA self-lockingsnap hook opens and connects without thumbsor ngers getting in the way.

HOUSINGThe SRL casing protects the inner parts ofthe SRL and holds the excess line when notin use. Durable, impact-resistant housingsoffer longer wear and greater protection ofthe brakes and retraction springs. DBI-SALAdeveloped the industrys only fully Sealed SRLthat isolates the critical working components, protecting them from the dirt, oil or grease

that the retracted cable can bring inside.

i-SafeEvery DBI-SALA SRL now comes withi-Safe, the Intelligent Safety Systemthat incorporates RFID and web-enabledcommunications technologies, providingyou with the ability to centrally trackinspections, control eld inventoryand manage critical safety information.

QUICK ACTIVATING BRAKING SYSTEMMany industry SRLs use a seat-belt type extensionand retraction mechanism which can malfunctionand lock-up when you dont want them to. DBI-SALASRLs feature an anti-racheting, twin disc brakemechanism that provides smooth operation andlocks only when you are ready. Once the mechanismengages, it stays locked, ensuring that the workeris not racheted down to the ground. The systemlimits arresting forces to 6kN or less. Because fallarrest begins within .6m, the required clearancedistance is reduced when using DBI-SALA SRLs.

RESERVE LIFELINESome SRLs have an emergency reserve lifelinefeature which means that if a worker has nearly allthe line extended and experiences a fall, the unitwill still be capable of absorbing energy and keepingthe arresting forces to a minimum.

3-WAY RETRIEVAL OPTIONSome SRLs incorporate a built-in winch retrieval

mechanism. These units not only provide fallprotection as a worker enters a conned spacesuch as a sewer or tank, but also allow activationof a retrieval mechanism for fast, convenient rescue.Raising and/or lowering is fast and convenient.

    DBI-SALA

HORIZONTALLIFELINE SYSTEMSThe Most Thoroughly Engineered On The MarketFor years safety engineers and site directors have put their trust in the highly engineeredDBI-SALA horizontal lifeline systems for superior technology and service. With the largest

range of systems to fit the variety of applications, DBI-SALA horizontal lifelines offersignificant benefits to enhance safety and productivity.

A horizontal lifeline is a complex system comprised of a flexible linewith connectors at both ends for securing it horizontally between twoanchorages or anchorage connectors. These systems are used to protectworkers operating in the horizontal plane who may not have continuousaccess to suitable anchorage points. Horizontal lifeline systems includethe lifeline component, necessary connectors and anchorages, and mayinclude an energy absorbing component.

ENERGY ABSORBERSome systems have in-line energy absorbersto reduce the overall forces on the system. TheDBI-SALA EZ-Line has an internal energy absorber. This means in case of a fall on the line, there willbe less forces applied to the anchorage structure.

LINESMost horizontal lifelines are madefrom galvanized metal or stainlesssteel to prevent the system fromwearing out through constantuse or environmental factors.

END CONNECTIONSSwaged or factory manufacturedends guarantees a faultlesslink between the cable and the

anchorage points, preserving thestrength of the cable or rope atits connection point.

ADJUSTABLE TERMINATIONConstruction practices are fast moving so yourequipment needs to be as well. For example theEZ-Line allows the user to easily adjust the cablelength of the horizontal lifeline systems.

PRECISION ENGINEERINGA horizontal lifeline system may appear to be a basic line strung between two anchors. It is not! Properengineering is critical to ensure a safe lifeline. Typical failures involve improper calculation of clearance,no account for sag in the lifeline, misunderstanding of anchorage strength and location. When a fall isexperienced on a horizontal lifeline, the load is magnified back to the anchorage point generatingtremendous force. The amount of sag amplifies the forces on the end anchors. Other factors includethe number of workers using the system, overall length and the material used. Precision engineeredsystems that have endured rigorous testing and meet CE requirements take the guesswork out of puttingtogether a horizontal fall protection system.

Permanent vs. PortableHorizontal lifelines systems are classified as permanent or portable. Portable

systems must be easy to install and remove. DBI-SALA portable lifeline systemsare affordable and lightweight for quick installation and versatile use. Evolutionis a particularly flexible system for companies seeking a permanent solution. Itprovides protection of their workplaces without any damage to the buildings orthe structures into which the lifeline has to be incorporated.

EvolutionPermanent Horizontal Lifeline SystemsEvolution is a permanently installed horizontal lifeline system that is completelyversatilestraight or curved systems and unlimited length.
