How can any-one watch TV or read the newspa-per and not realize that this country of ours is in dire shape and getting worse rapidly? How can they sit by and findtime to go to a ball game on a

vote? What is wrong with people?

Saturday or watch TV or go to a paradebutnotfindtimetoexercisetheir responsibility to vote? This Saturday, we have the runoff

election for the Louisiana Supreme Court. It is a critical election in which a conservative Republican, Jeff Hughes, is facing a moderate Democrat, John Michael Guidry. If Hughes wins, the Republicans will have a 4-3 majority on the highest court in our state, and the court will move in a more conser-vative, constitutionalist direction. But, based on early voting, only about 15 to 20 percent of conserva-tive voters will go to the polls. If that happens, the Democrat candi-date will probably win. Why? It’s very simple. The Democrat candidate has raised over $200,000 for the campaign. But have you seen a lot of TV spots for the Democrat? No, you haven’t. He is spending his money on the streets — on get-out-the-vote ef-forts in the inner city and in the riv-er parishes. Meanwhile, conserva-tive voters see Hughes’ spots on TV and no Guidry spots. They think, “Oh, Hughes has it in the bag!” Hardly. Conservative voters talk to their friends, and every one of their friends is voting for the Republi-

can. They think, “Oh, he’ll win in a breeze!” Hardly. The problem is, they’re just talk-ing to their friends — people who think like they think. But that’s not who will turn out to vote. If there is anything we should pound into one another, it is that we should all take the time to be informed and vote. Recently, I’ve been reading about the secession movement. Some people say states like Louisi-ana should secede from the Union! Secede? Are you kidding me? People are too lazy even to vote. Do you really think they have the motivation to take up arms and fight?That’sridiculous. If people took the time to cam-paign for good candidates, put up yard signs, wave signs on street corners, contribute to candidates, and vote, we wouldn’t have a prob-lem, and no one would be talking about seceding. We’re in a transition right now — from being the freest country in the world to being the laziest coun-try. Think me wrong? Then vote!

THE DEEPWATER PORT known today as the

Port of Greater Baton Rouge was created in 1952 by an act of

the Louisiana legislature. Construction began two years later and the first

vessel, a molasses carrier called the S.S. Clarisse, called on the port in 1956.

Guitierrez has 23 solo tackles this year, 60 assists, and nine quar-terback sacks. Parkview had little trouble de-feating Livonia last Friday night in thestate3Asemi-finals.Thefinalscore was 49-6. The wheels came off Livo-nia in the 3rd quarter. After that, Parkview scored at will. Coach Guillot said the Scotland-

ville and Catholic games were the most memorable of the season. The first game of the seasonagainst 5A Mandeville was can-celled because of bad weather. Af-ter that, Parkview opened the sea-son against Scotlandville, which had been predicted to win District 4-5A.

“We were very inexperiencedgoing into the Scotlandville game,” Guillot remembered. “We grew up a lot in that game. It was very tough physically.” After easy matches against Redemptorist and East St. John, Parkview played Catholic, a 5A powerhouse and a team clearly out

of Parkview’s league. But that didn’t matter to Guillot and his Eagles, who fought their way to a 39-34 victory. Catholic made it to thequarterfinals in thestate 5A playoffs. Parkview won State Champion-ships in 2001 against Belle Chasse, in 2007 against Westlake, and in

Parkview and Notre Dame have met in the playoffs over the past four years. Notre Dame coach Lewis Cook, Jr. joked that Parkview and Notre Dame know each other so well that theydon’treallyneedtoexchangegamefilms. Cook is one of the winningest coaches in Louisiana football his-tory. His victory over East Feli-ciana in the semi-finals last Fri-day gave him an overall record of 287 wins and 75 losses as a coach, movinghimintosixthplaceamongcoaches in career wins. The Eagles have 87 players on their roster, including freshmen. One of the inspirations for the Parkview team this year was the late Samuel Brett Wimberly. Wimberly, who would have been a senior lineman, died suddenly in February after an illness led to a heart ailment.
