Dear Friends,

I invite you to join us in a significant undertaking – a phase of the University’s capital campaign for the Austin Peay State University College of Business. As we launch this phase, think about your col-lege days and the challenges that lie before us. The business world into which our students graduate is changing dramatically. We, as business educators, need to respond with “continuous improvement,” keeping our curriculum rigorous and relevant to today’s market needs and becoming more nimble in our ability to respond quickly to change while educating our students about critical developments in busi-ness. To that end, our College is in the process of a comprehensive review, based in the pursuit of AACSB accreditation.

Consider where we have come from, where we stand now, and what new undertakings are possible for the future. Many times I ask our faculty and outside supporters to dream, for dreams are the steps to innovations. Our dreams include:

1. Facilities. The environment in which our students learn is one of the most important aspects of this dream. The facility we find ourselves is nearly 30 years old and it is adequate for traditional classes, however; we aspire to go beyond the traditional classroom. This aspiration will include case rooms, breakout rooms, student study spaces, and other critical learning atmospheres to help the students and faculty continue to succeed. 2. Technology. The technology in the College of Business has improved, but there is still more progress that is possible. 3. Student Programming. Implementation of new programs and systems will continue increase loyalty to Austin Peay and the College of Business. Examples of these programs include advising and tutoring systems, flexible scheduling, career services, and alumni outreach incentives. 4. Curricular Programming. Adaptive methods that facilities critical thinking and problem solving are key in today’s business school. We aspire to retain and attract the best faculty and professional staff to our College, implement centers that provide students with experiential learning opportunities, and continue to excel towards excellence while providing students with a quality education.

What is the greater purpose of business education? At its highest level, business can be a calling that creates livelihood for individuals and broader economic development for societies. We now have an opportunity to provide this livelihood to the future business students of Austin Peay State University.

We strive to achieve excellence and recognition for the Austin Peay College of Business, but we cannot do this without your help. I am grateful for and humbled by your support in helping to make the Austin Peay College of Business an esteemed institute of learning.

Together we can make a better future for the business leaders of tomorrow.

Special thanks,

Dean, Austin Peay College of Business

THE LEGACY CAMPAIGN FOR THE AUSTIN PEAY COLLEGE OF BUSINESS

The campaign for the Austin Peay College of Business is an integral part of the Legacy Campaign for Austin Peay State University, a University-wide effort to bring Austin Peay new

prominence in Tennessee and higher education and a preeminent position among comprehensive universities. We seek to propel the College of Business to a position among

the best business schools worldwide. With your support, we strive to:

• Earn statewide recognition as a center of academic excellence; • Recruit exceptional students regionally and globally; • Educate ethical, socially responsible business leaders; and • Strengthen connections among students, faculty, alumni and corporate partners through innovative educational programs, and impact the global business community one graduate at a time.

To that end, we are expanding our reach by offering scholarships to attract students from diverse cultures to study business at Austin Peay. We are expanding our faculty through endowed professorships to attract visionaries and superior scholars able to impact the

community. We are asking our partners to support our educators with funding that creates this impact and drives their research and innovation.

We are establishing new student life initiatives that smooth the transition for transfer students, develop systems to assist current students to learn from their peers, and integrate the entire APBusiness community into an enterprise devoted to inspiring excellence in the

workforce of tomorrow.

GOALS:In 1968, Austin Peay’s College of Business welcomed its first class of business students. Within

nearly a half-century, the College has educated more than 6,000 graduates who have gone on to serve the business community as entrepreneurs, accountants, marketing and media

experts, and managers.

Now, we have a distinctive opportunity to transform the College and move in new directions in response to the evolving needs of a changing business world. The business environment

has radically transformed over the past four decades, in terms of demographics, financial markets, technology, and communication. This change compels us to rethink not only the

purpose of business, but also the purpose of business education.

LOOKING AHEADOur goal is to position Austin Peay’s College of Business among the best schools and colleges in business education. We believe the College is poised to excel above the standards of other

business schools.

Our vision for the College of Business is to distinctively position ourselves among schools of business in four key areas. We strive to advance the understanding of:

• Business and free enterprise in a less than willing political economy; • Business in Middle Tennessee and surrounding regions; • Business and society integration; and • Societal values of business

REACHING NEW MILESTONES

As we initiate our journey to deliver enhanced value to our stakeholders, we reflect on our accomplishments:

• Record high enrollment and improved methods to increase graduation rates • Curriculum additions designed to prepare students for the complex, rapidly shifting business environment • Incorporation of graduate accounting courses in the Master of Science in Management program, intended to strengthen accounting students’ knowledge and equip them with the understanding of the principles needed to sit for the CPA examination

ACADEMIC INITIATIVES

The business curriculum provides a relevant and rigorous business education for part-time and full-time students in preparation for future leadership roles in a rapidly changing global

business environment.

Austin Peay State University strives to create opportunities for students of high ability. One of the most critical goals of this campaign is to open doors for exceptional students of the

Austin Peay College of Business.

In today’s economy, resources have dwindled and professionals wishing to advance their education face much greater financial need than ever before. Financial support is a critical

component of this campaign.

Imagine the view from the newest academic

building on the Austin Peay campus that over-looks the grandeur of

Clarksville and the pan-orama of the Cumber-land River — scenery

that should provide in-spiration for students “to

reach for the top.”

Will you invest in this dream?

BIG IDEAS - The AP Business Building

The yet unnamed structure, unveiled here as a dream, will provide a cutting-edge learning atmosphere for future generations of students. It is projected that upon completion, the

project will be over 70,000 square feet of dynamic learning and engagement space on three levels. The facility is conceived to include 12 classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology, podcasting and video conferencing capabilities, and the latest in wireless

technologies.

There will also be more than a dozen spaces located throughout the building that will be focused specifically on collaborative learning – commonly known as “breakout rooms.”

This facility will adequately provide space to create a learning environment. Communities of business students will facilitate a network of innovative leadership and assimilate workplace problems. This project will accelerate and symbolize the direction of the Austin Peay College

of Business. It will show that our College is growing and offering a top business program.

Can you see it yet? A new business complex will give Austin Peay a competitive advantage in recruiting the best and the brightest from not only Tennessee, but from around the world. The new building will feature the latest in sustainable and ecologically sensitive design and

technology.

Steve Forbes said at the dedication of a new business building, “You recognize the importance of the mind, not resources. Minds make

resources… The mind is supreme. We’re going to develop it.”

BIG IDEAS -- Naming OpportunityThe naming of the College of Business is a sure way to make your success live forever. The funding of the name has an equal effect. The building that could hold your name will also

house faculty who produce research and inspire the business leaders of tomorrow, as well as the student body of the College of Business.

Can you imagine students entering the (insert your name here) College of Business at Austin Peay State University?

BIG IDEAS -- Trading RoomExperiential learning is one of the proven methods of enhancing a student’s value to

potential employers. In finance and investments, the trading room is the ultimate simulation for investments. Trading rooms first appeared on college campuses 15 years ago at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. There are over 60 business schools that have trading rooms. Trading rooms are financial labs used as classrooms for finance courses in investing

or futures markets. The lab is a where students analyze real-time and historical financial data and build and test investment portfolios. Additionally, our lab will serve as home base for

our TVA program’s student-run investment fund and provide data for faculty research.

To engage the community, our trading room will be opened to host summer camp for high school students called Wall Street 101. The camp will introduce the students to the exciting

world of finance and the Austin Peay College of Business. Students will use trading simulator software FTS (Financial Trading System) developed at Carneigie Mellon in the late 1980s in order to create a focal point for students interested in trading careers and generate a type of enthusiasm difficult to create and maintain. This engagement with the community

and a fully equipped trading lab will go a long way toward enhancing the reputation and prominence of our College of Business.

Trading rooms create excitement, lend an air of realism, and help convey the message that the center is on the cutting edge of investment research education. And this is something

our College needs. You can trade on it!

Page 13: Capital Campaign

The need for a trading room reflects the strong job market in the finance world. Finance positions for 2010 were projected at 236,000 jobs nationwide and a 23% increase in the 2010-2020 timeframe. We believe that the trading room experience will give our students an advantage in the marketplace and help

them earn additional certifications in the financial area. Beyond the Trading room Pittsburgh-based FTS has about 60 active

university users, about 20 in a trading room setting, with the remainder using it to create a virtual trading room via the Web.

BIG IDEAS – THE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS CENTERS AT AUSTIN PEAY

STATE UNIVERSITY

Centers create enthusiasm and engagement between the community and the College. The need for centers is rooted the fundamental understanding that the greatest resource a

College possesses is the intellectual capital of its faculty. Faculty members are trained to create new knowledge and they distribute that knowledge through various outlets – the

classroom, seminars, lecture and speaking series, and working/published papers.

The role of the center is to acquire and compile data, assemble information in various areas of interest, and to generate activities that produce breakthroughs in education, leadership,

networking, and the creation and sharing of knowledge. The centers of the College of Business at Austin Peay, cast in the pursuit of excellence and free enterprise, will:

• Support and encourage collaborative and interdisciplinary applied research • Influence curriculum development and pedagogical innovations • Impact our students and prepare them to be an ethically sensitive and socially aware citizens • Engage the Austin Peay campus with practical applications of principles and ideals to enhance campus life • Promote economic understanding and social responsibility in business and civic life • Partner with external organizations, academic and professional associations, and corporations in the pursuit of these goals

To that end the following “big ideas” are presented.

Page 16: Capital Campaign

Center for Business Ethics

The purpose of the College of Business’ Center for Business Ethics (CBE) is to heighten ethical awareness that promotes integrity and trust in all forms of business relationships. We will accomplish this by influencing curricular development and establishing ethical cultures in businesses through our network of alumni. The center will pursue this purpose through

the application of practical experience and applied research. The center will also utilize innovative education processes/simulations and policies/practices of disseminating papers

and media, focused on the best moral practices.

The College of Business’ CBE will partner with corporations to create knowledge, stimulate public discourse, and offer opportunities for engagement in ethics conferences, seminars,

workshops, and lecture series.

This partnership will stimulate an appreciation for the importance of business ethics among executives, business owners, ethics professionals, compliance professionals, academics,

researchers, and students of business.

Page 17: Capital Campaign
Page 18: Capital Campaign

Center for Economics Education

The College of Business’ Center for Economics Education (CEE) will reach out to high school students and give them the foundations of free enterprise. Free enterprise is an economic

system where few restrictions are placed on business activities and ownership. In this system, governments generally have minimal ownership of enterprises in the marketplace. This

system aims for limited restrictions on trade and minimal government intervention.

The College of Business’ CEE will partner with high schools and school systems to create knowledge, stimulate public discourse, and offer opportunities for engagement in

economics conferences, seminars, workshops, and lecture series.

From this community involvement, an appreciation for the importance of free enterprise among high school students, administrators, and business owners will evolve.

Page 20: Capital Campaign

Center for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Education

The College of Business’ Center for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Education (CESBE)will compliment and enhance entrepreneurial education at Austin Peay by providing hands-

on practice and experience in building start-up businesses and entrepreneurial careers.

The CESBE will provide workshops, events, scholarships, and one-on-one mentoring with a significant entrepreneurship advisory board. The center will help students interested in

launching their own businesses or launching their careers in start-up companies in the Middle Tennessee region.

Within the College of Business’ CESBE is the Women and Business Startup Hub. This division of the center will encourage and develop future female entrepreneurs through scholarships

and collaborative events focused primarily on the success of women in business.

Center for Financial Analysts and Planners

The College’s Center for Financial Analysts and Planners (CFAP) will help our students add the experiential component to their education. Working in groups and using the CFAP Trading

Room under faculty supervision will train the recommended individuals in the areas of financial investments and portfolios.

Students will evaluate current and historical financial data and identify economic/business trends. They will also examine a firm’s financial statements and analyze commodity prices,

sales, costs, expenses, and tax rates to determine the firm’s value by projecting the company’s future earnings.

Additionally, students will meet with various firm company officials to gain better insight

into the company’s prospects and management. These meetings will help students to create written reports and present their findings in case competitions. Ultimately, the students will

meet with firm officials and potential investors to explain their recommendations.

Center for Risk Management, Insurance, and Real Estate Education

The College of Business’ Center for Risk Management, Insurance, and Real Estate Education (CRMIREE) will facilitate learning in the finance, insurance, and real estate industries.

Students will be able to identify, assess, and prioritize risk as defined in ISO 31000. Students will acquire the skills to coordinate the economical application of resources to minimize,

monitor, and control the probability and/or impact of unfortunate events or to maximize the realization of opportunities.

They will examine risk factors from uncertainty in financial markets, project failures at any

phase in design, development, or production life-cycle, legal liabilities, credit risk, accidents, natural causes and disasters as well as deliberate attack from an adversary, or events of

uncertain or unpredictable root-cause.

The CRMIREE will support the community through workshops, events and programs, scholar-ships, and consulting services to apply risk management standards from the Project Management Institute, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, actuarial

societies, and ISO standards.

Student teams will use methods, definitions and goals according to whether the risk management method is in the context of project management, security, engineering,

industrial processes, financial portfolios, actuarial assessments, or public health and safety.

Center for Healthcare Business Systems

The Center for Healthcare Business Systems (CHBS) will compliment and enhance accounting and finance education at Austin Peay by providing experiential opportunities for students to build, implement and support business system solutions pertaining to the following health-

care functions; billing, accounts receivable, commissions, disbursements and human resources.

The CHBS relies heavily on the finance, accounting, and human resource areas, on an expert level understanding of the business processes, and on supporting IT system functions and

associated computer application architecture. Through simulation and experiential exercises, the Center will challenge students to define, test, and manage business processes, requirements and functional design through the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), as

well as provide ongoing operations and systems support.

The CHBS will provide workshops, events, scholarships, and one-on-one consulting with significant input from the healthcare advisory board in order to craft superior students

interested in pursuing their careers in Healthcare start-up companies.

Dean’s Lecture Series

The Dean’s Lecture Series will bring well known business and civic leaders to the Austin Peay campus to share their insights with students and community members.

This series will align with the proposed centers to bring new thought and spur action in the College of Business.

Leaders in ethics, economics, finance, risk management, and healthcare will bring current

practice and future need to keep faculty and students abreast of how the College of Business at Austin Peaty State University can continue to produce the next generation of business and

community leaders.

Fellow supporters,

I want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for those who have given back to my alma mater. The College of Business has shaped my life, both professionally and personally. I can fondly remember the interaction between the professors and students as we were prepared to continue our learning experiences, outside the classroom and after graduation.

This campaign is not only about creating a legacy for yourself, but also a lasting impact on the current student body of the College of Business. Please join me in supporting the College as it goes through a process of improving and creating new exemplary centers and programs that will not only benefit the students, but also the University as a whole.

Your gift is more appreciated than you may imagine. I encourage you to contemplate, not only the current students who will be positively shaped into young business leaders, but also the future generations of Austin Peay alum.

Best regards,

Supporter of AP Business
