Showcases
CAPEX20 is a virtual showcase highlighting the outcomes of more than 140 final
year student projects in Software and Electrical Engineering including Robotics
and Mechatronics Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science and
much more.
Run every year by the School of Software & Engineering, CAPEX20 brings
opportunities to interact with our students and discuss your involvement in
future projects with the School of Software and Electrical Engineering.
This year the format will be 10 virtual showcases highlighting Capstone projects
based on various categories. Each showcase will run for about 60 minutes.
During the showcase, Undergraduate and Post-graduate project teams will
deliver a "promotional pitch" they have prepared about their project and their
experience. Q&A sessions during each showcase allow the audience an
opportunity to pose questions to the teams.
Feel free to join any showcase throughout the Expo. Join the information
sessions, during and at the end of the Expo, to ask any questions about the Expo
or the Capstone Project Programs offered by Swinburne.
2
How the Capstone Program works
The Capstone Projects Program is run through the Faculty of Science,
Engineering and Technology at Swinburne University, School of Software and
Electrical Engineering located in Hawthorn. It includes different Capstone Project
topics, each offering students a professional development learning opportunity.
Many of the projects are sourced from industry whilst others are provided
through various research organisations.
Once a project is selected by a subject convenor, clients will be contacted directly
by a team of students who have been assigned to work with them on their
Capstone project to investigate the problems they have outlined. The students
arrange an interview with the client to discuss their project and together they
will discuss what they hope to achieve over the project period.
Swinburne aims to give students experience working on a real-world technology
project with a tangible outcome, such as a requirements document or
development of a prototype for an individual or business. Students gain skills in
project management and professional communication, and develop a deeper
understanding of the benefits and difficulties of working in a team situation,
which we hope better equips them for successful employment on graduation
and for their future careers.
Maybe there is something we can do for you !

Games and Apps
Students collaborate in small to large interdisciplinary groups designing, developing
and playtesting games in a studio environment developing an original game title in
their final year. Students gain skills in software development using an object-
oriented approach and specialist areas in games design and development and learn
about the creative and design aspects of multimedia and internet technologies,
particularly as applied to games development.
Similarly mobile app developers apply the skills they’ve learned to produce working
prototypes in Android and IOS using native code and hybrid development platforms.

Adaptive Irrigation Control Development of Control Algorithm Australia is home to a diverse agricultural landscape from rice and cotton to a variety of fruits and nuts. This agriculture is the backbone of the economy and stocks Australia’s supermarket shelves. However, the success of the harvest is almost entirely dependent on the plants being watered on their needs. An adaptive irrigation control system has the ability to adapt to the external environment, eliminating the need for intuition-based watering. The development of the control algorithm in this system sees variables from a weather station manipulated to create an output that can dynamically adjust the watering schedules. Musicians have long used electronic aids to create a unique live experience for the audience, utilising technology to push the boundaries and express their creativity. The advent of Internet enabled microcontrollers has opened up a new avenue of research and applications to build better tools. This project looked at developing a smart, centralised tool using interfaces that musicians are already comfortable with to build a prototype system enabling easy configuration of advanced control of a live performance. Security of An IoT Medical Dispenser As the population ages, their ongoing health is a prime concern for society in general. A handful of "cheap and dumb" and "expensive and smart" solutions exist to aid the elderly community in managing their health and drug prescriptions, however there exists no "cheap and smart" solution that can bring intelligent solutions to the greater public. Another key aspect to digital health solutions is security of data and privacy of users. This project involves building of a prototype health IoT solution coupled with an experimental evaluation of the capabilities of typical embedded devices to provide relevant encryption and security standards.
