It’s been an eventful week in the rugby world, especially as the club scene is reaching its critical stages. We have seen a raft of convincing results as clubs have really

stepped up their game.

This weekend, we welcome our Muslim clubs back to the club scene after what we hope was a healthy and successful Ramadan.

This week after the show I had a chat with some my guests, both younger than many administrators out there. The one common thread that was

apparent was how they both saw the importance of understanding a long-term vision for the club.

The Top 9 and Top 8 tournaments have started to get underway and all teams are hard at work to ensure they end the season on a high. With the President’s Cup starting soon, there truly is something to play for in every game.

The DHL Western Province team is gearing up for the upcoming Absa Currie Cup, and the Springboks are hard at work in preparation for the Rugby Championship, which starts on 16 August.

On that note, we must congratulate Damien de Allende, who has again been selected in the Springbok squad, having cruelly missed South Africa’s Incoming Tour Series with an untimely knee injury in June. Good luck to all our DHL Western Province players in the Bok mix.

The Springbok Women are currently in France for the Women’s Rugby World Cup and we continue to wish them all the best. There are a number of DHL Western Province representatives in the team, so we’ll be watching with keen interest.

Last, but not least, best of luck to Ricky Petersen and his Sevens team as they get set to represent DHL Western Province in Limerick and London, as part of the World Club Sevens competition over the next fortnight.Thelo WakefieldWPRFU PRESIDENT

It was again clear to me that today’s successful administrator is one who thinks of the future in terms of the growth of the club through fan engagement and good youth development.

We agreed that a successful club needs a successful culture, starting with the youth, and that every match needs to be treated as an event, which provides entertainment and value to the fans watching.

On this week’s show, we spoke about the difficulties of administering a club as a volunteer, and that one should perhaps focus on the things that are easy to implement on a regular basis. Ensuring that you give each one of your supporters and players a Cape Rugby TV magazine is one way to add value to the fan and is easy to do.

Dropping off your club rugby jersey to be on TV is easy to do and could land you a sponsor. My tip of the week, do the easy things first.

In what was a game of small margins, it was False Bay’s forward dominance that drove them to victory over UWC.

UWC will no doubt be feeling hard done by after leading 10-5 at halftime. Although shorn of the attacking talents of Freddie Muller, their backline still managed to trouble False Bay’s defence. However, some uncharacteristic bad handling let them down.

False Bay’s captain Michael Poppmeier was immense on the day, leading his troops from the front.

In the end, it was a penalty from flyhalf Ridhaa Damon which secured the points for False Bay and keeps them in the hunt for a Community Cup place.

A last-minute penalty earns False Bay a much-needed victory over UWC.

Division: Super League AMatch: Primrose v SK WalmersVenue: Rosemead AvenueOne of the most fiercely contested rivalries in all of club rugby, Primrose versus SK Walmers is a fixture that both clubs most look forward to each season. Both teams have shown flashes of brilliance this season and possess two of the most dangerous backlines in the division. It’s been a while since these two rivals locked horns and both teams will be looking to make a serious statement come match day.

Division: Super League BMatch: Villager v St George’sVenue: Brookside Sports GroundThis has the potential to be the game of the weekend as both sides go into this one with Super League B glory in mind. They both sit on 40 log points respectively and know that a victory here will send them to the top of the table. Villager have been dominant this season and are yet to lose a game. St George’s have proven to be a match for anyone as the league’s surprise packages, but will have to be at their best to win away from home.

Division: Super League CMatch: Violets v PaarlVenue: Chukker RoadViolets have had a solid season, but will be disappointed that they didn’t capitalise on their early promise. They will hope to be fresh and firing after the break as they host Paarl in what should be an exciting clash in Super League C.

Division: Top 9 Champions LeagueMatch: Blue Stars v Blue JetsVenue: Klapmuts Field AWith this phase of the competition still in its infancy, both clubs will be looking to get off to the best possible start in order to have a good chance of gaining promotion to Super League C. Blue Jets have been one of the most impressive teams this season and they’ll be sure to bring their intensity.

Match: Perseverance v Young IdeasVenue: City ParkYoung Ideas just missed out on a place in the Top 9 competition and can consider themselves unlucky not to be fighting it out for a place in Super League C. They now face a Perseverance side that finished bottom of the City League, and be hyped up to prove their worth.

Division: Northern League Top 8Match: Kylemore v Strand PioneersVenue: KylemoreAnother side unlucky to have missed out on the “Champions League” is Kylemore as they just missed out because of points difference. They host Strand Pioneers, who have yet to win a game this season, but will be eager to turn their fortunes around.

Division: Southern League Top 8Match: Peninsula v RetreatVenue: SandvleiThis is a match between two teams that have had inconsistent seasons, but they have shown occasional flashes of brilliance. Peninsula will look to continue their good form and put away Retreat, who are dangerous when given opportunities to run.

Division: Paarl League Top 6Match: Vineyards v AllandaleVenue: Daljosafat Sports GroundsThe only game in the Paarl Region this week sees Vineyards open their campaign against an Allandale side that has lost their first two games. Vineyards have enjoyed an excellent season, just losing out to Lower Paarl for top spot.

Division: Simonsberg RegionMatch: Phizantekraal v ExcelsiorVenue: PhizantekraalPhizantekraal will be looking for a win here to keep pace with Pumas at the top of the table. Excelsior are also in the hunt and will be looking to upset the apple cart in what should be the division’s fixture of the week.

Young Wesley’s captain Enrico Wiehahn is hoping to lead his side to Super League C promotion.

The club is currently in the Top 9 “Champions League” after finishing third overall in the Southern League A big part of their success has been Wiehahn’s leadership.

“I grew up near Young Wesley’s and my uncles and grandfathers all played for the club,” he tells Cape Rugby TV.

Wiehahn has been with the club for 23 years and started playing as a junior. This season’s success comes as no surprise to him.

“Our goal was always to make it to Super League C. We had an early pre-season and started training on the beach in January. The players have been very committed to the cause.”

Wiehahn is a ball-playing front-rower thanks to his history as a backline player. “I still have a good step!” he quips.

Wiehahn is in the twilight of his career and is focused on being a leader on and off the pitch.

“This will probably be my last season playing first team rugby and I’ve been trying to teach the youngsters here about respect and discipline.”

ENRICO WIEHAHNYOUNG WESLEY’S

Jeraldo Jacobs is a key figure for an All Saints side that has struggled for consistency this season.

“It’s been a tough season for us,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “We’ve had some bad luck on the field and the players have let the club down.”

Despite these disappointments, the club still attracts a lot of supporters to the Helderzight Fields on game days.

“There’s a very good atmosphere here. The club is like a family.”

Jacobs has been with the club for nine years having played as a junior, and is determined to take it forward.

“My own form has been up and down this season, but we’re all working hard to improve.”

All Saints are currently competing in the Bottom 8 from the Northern League and will no doubt be looking to secure their place in the league for next season. The form of Jeraldo Jacobs will be key in achieving that.

Wigan Pekeur is one of the standout players in a star-studded Sir Lowrians squad.

As a junior, he represented DHL Western Province U19. He spent four years playing Varsity Cup rugby for UJ and Super Rugby for the Lions.

He joined Sir Lowrians at the start of the season and is enjoying his involvement.

“It’s a good club with a great history,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “There’s a feeling of togetherness here and it’s lovely to represent a club with such great ambition.”

Sir Lowrians have been battling it out at the top of Super League B this season and with a few games to go, will look to Pekeur’s “X Factor” to see them through.

“I’m definitely an off-the-cuff player. If I see an opportunity, I’m going to go for it.”

Pekeur is one of several star names at the club and he understands the importance of helping to develop the younger talent there.

“The guys who have played at the top level are very approachable and will always look to share their experiences with the younger guys.”

Young wing Talieb Johnson is making a name for himself in Super League A with his pace, tricky footwork and all-round running game.

False Bay is having a great season so far and is pushing Hamiltons for the Community Cup spot. It’s a great achievement considering that this is their first season back after being relegated last year.

This is Johnson’s first season at the club, having played for SK Walmers before.

“It’s been a great experience for me, but I’m still learning,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “There’s a good vibe here, a real sense of togetherness.

“We’re definitely looking to get into the Community Cup”, he adds. “It’s been a good season so far, but we’ll continue to take it game by game and see what happens. We have some big fixtures coming up, so we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.”

Johnson’s stepping abilities have become somewhat legendary around the club and he is starting to make waves around the rest of the league. He was recently named in the Western Province Amateurs side and is a name to look out for.

CONSISTENT FORCEBelhar have been playing in the top leagues over the past 21 years.

This season has been a solid one for Belhar as they’ve won most of their games in Super League A. They have been very competitive

and are always tough opposition for anybody, especially at Accordian Park.

Club secretary Jerome America is aware of the good work going on behind the scenes.

“This club is run very well,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “Belhar creates a second home for the players and everyone supports one another.”

Belhar competed in the inaugural Community Challenge at the beginning of the year and America is thankful for the opportunity afforded to the club.

“That competition was great for us. It was a great way to prepare the guys and for the youngsters to show their skills. Most of our side this season was formed through that competition,” he said.

Key to the club’s consistency is its deep-rooted principles. There are disciplinary hearings each week to ensure that no one at the club is stepping out of line.

“We try to create an opportunity for players to rise above their circumstances,” says America. “However, we do expect a certain level of respect and decorum in return.”

On the field, Belhar have implemented an effective game plan. Off the field, they have created an atmosphere at the club where every player is made to feel part of the family.

“Our forwards do not stand back for anyone,” explains America. “We try to create space out wide as we have some of the most exciting backline players in the league. We have a very balanced team, with a good mix of youth and experience. Our players come from difficult circumstance, so we help them out as much as possible.”

Turning the TideWhistling Wheels have gone through a tough season, but are finding form.

Whistling Wheels boast a very proud history, having produced many club rugby players, referees, and coaches over the years.

“We have produced a lot of players for the Western Province Vodacom Cup and amateur teams,” club secretary Peter Marcus tells Cape Rugby TV. “Don Eiman, coach of Young Wesley’s, is also from here originally, as is referee Daniel Fortuin.”

In 2006, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XVs all won their respective leagues. These are the heights that the club wants to reach again.

“Somewhere along the way, the club stopped investing in young talent,” says Marcus. “Now we are going out of our way to recruit players for the club and we have approached schools to start a partnership.”

This season did not go according to plan for the team as they have underperformed. Marcus is convinced that Whistling Wheels are starting to turn the corner.

“We’re playing good rugby. We had a tough first half of the season, but we have some exciting youngsters here and we’re looking to win this Top 8 competition.”

Ultimately, Marcus is hoping that the team will bring the spirit back to their supporters.

“We want to entertain them again. This is a community club and we’re coming together for a good cause,” explains Marcus. “Players who have gone off the track at the start of the season are now gelling together nicely.”

He also came close to national selection, but a shoulder injury ruled him out of the SA U16 elite squad. He starred for DHL Western Province at the recent U18 Craven Week as the team put in a great performance.

“Craven Week was a great experience,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “The competition was really tough so it was good to test myself against quality opposition.”

His deadly boot is his greatest weapon, consistently driving opposition back and getting his team on the front-foot. He is an accurate goal-kicker too.

At school level, Swanepoel starred in his team’s 27-13 victory over SACS earlier in the year. Stellenberg have had a good season so far, winning 10 out of their 15 games. Swanepoel, who is also their vice-captain, is eyeing the derby against Paarl Gym as the main game to win.

Unsurprisingly, he is eyeing a long-term future in the game and his recent performances will stand him in good stead.

“I want to play for professionally for DHL Western Province after school,” he says.

The club’s youth set-up is definitely growing. When Carr first took over they had 30 players, now they have over 120 playing across all age groups.

“Developing our youth is a big part of our identity,” says Carr. The club has four youth products in the current senior team, as well as a representative in the Western Province Amateur squad.

Of their famous alumni, DHL Stormers Flank Nizaam Carr, who happens to be Adil’s nephew, also came through the club’s youth ranks.

Caledonian Roses have made great strides in eradicating gangsterism among the youth in Hannover Park through rugby.

“Most of our youth players come from the area,” chairman of Caledonian Roses youth rugby Adil Carr tells Cape Rugby TV. “We send our senior players to go coach and help the youngsters. We want to show that rugby can be an alternative to gangsterism.”

To date, Caledonian Roses have eight youth teams, ranging from U7 up to U19.

Which clubs have you represented?I’m currently registered with UCT, although I haven’t played for them. I’d love to represent a club like SK Walmers as I feel I’d benefit from giving back to a smaller club.

Do you take time to watch club rugby?For sure, I try watch whenever I can. I have a lot of friends at UCT, so I’ll watch them whenever possible. The recent Varsity Cup was a highlight and was a great vibe. I’ve watched a few SK Walmers games too and it seems like a lot of fun.

Do you feel that club rugby is beneficial to a player’s development?Definitely. So many players come through the Western Province club rugby structures. I can think of guys like Nic Groom, who really benefitted from that exposure. It’s a great platform to give players an opportunity.

What do you feel about Western Province’s talent identification system?I think they’re doing a good job. It’s a really tough job considering the amount of rugby that is played each week, but there’s definitely enough talent out there to keep them busy!

Super League A is very tight this year. Who do you reckon will take the title?I have to back the boytjies of UCT!

Any advice to club rugby players out there?I’ve always found that I play my best rugby when I’m happy and enjoying myself, so I’d advise players to relax and have fun. I’d also add that if the opportunity presents itself to get a degree, then take it! Prepare yourself for life after rugby.

Hennie Heydenrych has been officiating for five years and is a Level Two referee.

“I always wanted to be a ref and to be involved in rugby in some way or other,” the 26-yea-old tells Cape Rugby TV.

Heydenrych’s playing career came to a premature end after a shoulder injury suffered in high school. However, he was determined to make a career out of refereeing.

“Becoming a referee has opened up a lot of doors for me,” he says. “Club rugby is great for referees as there is a level of intensity here that is unmatched. It’s a great learning curve for young referees.”

Referee Hennie Heydenrych is making a name for himself on the club rugby scene.

BEHIND THE WHISTLE

As all good referees do, Heydenrych has a clear routine before each match.

“I make sure to talk to both teams, so they know what I expect and the standards I set. I make a point of telling the captains that only they may speak to me and that my decision is final.”

Heydenrych cites Jaco Peyper and Craig Joubert as his biggest influences and he hopes to one day join them on the SARU panel of referees.

“I’m concentrating on getting to Level One. From there, I hope to make the SARU panel and take charge of provincial games,” he explains.

WOMEN’S PROFILE

VUYOKASI MBONDAUWC

DHL Western Province stalwart Vuyokasi Mbonda has a big presence on the field for club and country. She began her rugby career in Port Elizabeth in 2002 and has not looked back.

She then, she joined DHL Western Province in 2010.

“I was overwhelmed when I first arrived in Cape Town,” she tells Cape Rugby TV. “It’s very different from other provinces. Everyone gets a chance to play here and players are picked on merit. It’s very professional.”

Mbonda, who goes by the nickname “Naughty”, has also represented the Springbok Women and just narrowly missed out on a place at the World Cup after making the training squad. She currently plies her trade for UWC.

“This is the best club I could have hoped to join,” she says. “It’s so professional here. The women are well looked after and don’t lack anything. Club rugby for women is definitely growing.”

Mbonda’s favourite position is eighthman, but she doesn’t matter where she plays, as long as she gets to play with ball in hand.

“I just enjoy playing rugby, no matter what team and no matter what position!”

COACH’S CORNER

Tell us about your rugby background.I played club rugby at Villager. When my playing career ended. I started coaching their U20s. Two years ago, I was approached to take up a coaching role at Masi. I met with Darren Clarke, who is the director of the club. He told me about the history and vision for the future and I was hooked immediately. This club has seen remarkable progress in the past few years, so I’m glad to be involved.

Masi have enjoyed a great season. What do you put that down to?Although training in the last month has been tough in the weather conditions, there is always 100% commitment from the guys. They have bought into the vision for the club. On game days, there is always great “gees” and you can feel that everyone is pulling together.

What are the biggest strengths of the team?I’ve been lucky to have a core group of strong leaders. Guys like Sandile India, Martin Bearschank and Siya Mkiva have been great in leading the younger guys. Most of all it’s the togetherness on the field that has been the difference. We play a direct style of rugby and look to open up chances out wide.

What do you think of the new league format?It’s great. These new competitions like the Top 9 “Champions League” and the President’s Cup mean that there is always something to play for in every game. In the past, clubs who would be mid-table would fall away, because there was nothing to play for. That’s not the case anymore.

What are the biggest challenges that your club faces?It all boils down to funding. We’re always looking to get sponsors on board as we’re a community club. There is a lot of passion and talent in the Noordhoek areas, but we do suffer from a lack of funding.

HUNGRY FOR SUCCESSMasiphumelele head coach Warren Edwards is building a young, hungry team.

The club will provide transport to the guys from the townships at their own cost.

What are your goals for the rest of the season?Now that we’re in the Top 9, we want to win it and gain promotion to Super League C. As a young coach, I’m taking it season by season, but I’m very happy at Masi.

Who have been your standout players?Siya and Martin have been immense, while Vincent Monk and Lungelo Payi have done well too. We’ve got two players in the Western Province Disa training squad, so we’ll be holding thumbs for them.
