BIENNIAL OF CAPE VERDE July 1998
An initiative of Government of Cape Verde with the
Secretary of State for Youth of the Portuguese
Government and the Portuguese Club of Arts and Ideas.
The organization of the Biennial of Young Creators of the
Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, taken as
a form of promotion and rapprochement of cultures.
The approval of the project happened in the first Summit
of Youth Ministers of the Portuguese Speaking Countries
held on 17 and 18 July 1996 in Lisbon. This summit was
attended by Ministers of Youth of Angola, Cape Verde,
Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, S. Tomé and Príncipe and
Portugal, (Brazil was absent).
The CPLP real cohesion will become a reality if young
people are open to the establishment of formal and
informal relationships, predisposed to engage in personal
relationships of affection, solidarity, exchange and sharing
of knowledge, skills, and experiences – this was the
conceptual framework for the decision.
The Biennial aims to be an effective contribution to the
strengthening and cohesion of the CPLP.
The areas of artistic expression presented in this event,
were: Architecture, Fine Arts, Design, Comics, Fashion,
Illustration, Photography, Film, Video, Dance, Music,
Literature and Theatre.
Each country made its own selection, choosing works that
were considered to be representative of the expressions
of its young creators. The biennial exhibition happened
with the participation of 180 artists from Angola, Cape
Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Portugal, Mozambique and Sao
Tome and Principe.
The Biennale took place in Cidade da Praia and in
Mindelo.
