Louise Carver’s debut release in jewellery has seen her launch an exquisite line of pearl accessories. We love her gorgeous range showcasing white Japanese Keshi pearls. The teardrop earrings featured below, with a golden pearl as their centerpiece, are a winner. Louise’s white fresh-water pearl stud earrings start at R145 with her top of the range Keshi pearl earrings - interlaced with

grey fresh water pearls - going for R2545. Jingle and Chimes: Statement Jewellers, 39 Castel Street, Cape Town.

Natural free-flowing breathable

fabrics are the focus this season for

the boardroom. We love creations that

draw on the ebb and flow of nature’s

pulse and her canvas - a fresh, clean

colour palette. White in particular is

making a huge comeback setting the

tone as a conversation piece around

which all other fashion statements are

made. Splashes of teals, oranges and

greys act as playful soul mates to high-

waisted trousers. Pair with a top with

floral detail and you’re in business.

Better still spruce up your look with a

floral accents. Jo Borkett: Cavendish

TIME FOR A DETOXGREEN EVOLUTION

Spring brings with it a wonderful opportunity to go on a detox programme, so why not consider a fantastic scrub from RAIN at Cavendish Square? Unique to this store is the DIY Scrub Deli where clients can create their own scrub mix in a four-step process. This involves selecting custom-size quantities from a range of active scrubs, bases, and carrier and essential oils. A popular active scrub ingredient is the green tea, bran and almond scrub. These scrubs are perfect first thing in the morning when you shower as part of a detox regimen or once a week as a means of exfoliating the skin.

What was your motivation for auditioning for the play Fat Pig due to run at On Broadway?I had no intentions to do theatre this year but the producer of the play, Lee-Anne Summers gave me a copy of the script to read...by the time I got through a quarter of the script I had her on the phone telling her I had to play this role. It’s a wonderfully funny, moving and contentious play. It’s no wonder it’s won so many awards!

What has been the highlight in preparing for this star-studded production? We’ve had more time to prepare for this production than most theatre shows. That’s been great - having the time to really break down the script and explore the characters’ motivations. It’s wonderful to be given the time to inhabit a role so completely.

Tell me more about your character in it….Tom is your run-of-the-mill corporate type who tries hard to be liked by everyone. He goes through life pretty aimlessly allowing himself to be taken by the current rather than making any decisions as to his own direction. He goes from meaningless relationship to meaningless relationship until he meets...Helen.

Who’s the funniest co-star you’ve worked with? Most of the cast on Big Fellas cracked me up on a daily basis. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much on set. Not surprising with a cast including: Cokey Falkow, Kagiso Lediga, Marc Lottering and Louw Venter.

A penny for a joke..Two fish in a tank. One turns to the other and says, “You drive, I’ll man the guns!”

One of your favourite characters you’ve played …I still have a particular fondness for the role that was my break into the industry as a young actor fresh out of college – Stuart Buller on Isidingo.

Where is the most exotic place you’ve gone scuba diving. Why was it so remarkable? The Brothers Islands in the Red Sea – two coral atolls in the middle of the ocean with the biggest proliferation of life I’ve ever seen anywhere on Earth - thousands of tropical corals and fish of every colour and shape. Plus the water is 280C and the visibility is between 25 and 100m!

The craziest place you’ve rock climbed…Railay Beach in Thailand

A gadget you’ve had your eye on for a while…The iPad2

Bookings for Fat Pig through Computicket or On Broadway.

Looking to lose a few kilos to regain your bikini figure for the beach this summer? Think green tea. Researchers have discovered that drinking a cup of green tea daily will boost your metabolism from 8 to 14 percent, that’s why they highly recommend it to those who are looking for a quick method to lose fat.Tea is made from Camellia Sinesis and has three main varieties: green, black and oolong. The difference between these types is their concentration levels of polyphenol antioxidants. The more polyphenols there are in the ingredients, the better the fat-burning effects and benefits will be.

Original styles still available at select stores:

For the world of burgers there is McDonalds. For the super-rich there is Nobu - seemingly worldwide, pandering to the healthy food needs of the well-heeled in a skilled and innovative manner. Nobu San has had an interesting career path from Japanese chef and South American innovator to LA legend. We end up with a brave Cape Town Nobu in the One & Only environment which succeeded where those with a more interesting vocabulary failed. Nobu as a man is friendly, personable, attentive and appears and works in all of his restaurants. You know this isn’t just his name on the door. The Black Cod is probably the dish that he will always be remembered for. Barbecue sauce for the gastronomically adept. The sticky sweet-savoury delicacy is subtle as it is delicious. Expect to have to sell one of your children if you want to enjoy this on a regular basis however. The winner for me is a less acknowledged dish - the Yellowtail sashimi: jalapeño lime and the meaty tenderness of the fish. It is worth returning for. Nobu is one of the few restaurants in this town with well-trained and mostly knowledgeable staff. There are very few “let me just ask in the kitchen” moments. At the moment they are running a five-course winter special for R299. Go get your fix. It is enough food, but budget a little extra for that black cod, the yellowtail and the inevitable bamboo cauldrons of superb frozen sake. 021 431 [email protected]

Watches are all about bling. Luminox watches are all about seeing. Little vials of fluorescent gunk glow for a guaranteed 25 years allowing you to see the hour markers and hands in the dark. US Special Forces use them. Now they have their special model black-out edition. Oxymoronic at first glance until the tough lightweight and matte Finnish thing hits your wrist and the gold Rolex is long forgotten. Still visible in the dark, this antidote to chrome -heeled rap-star accessorising is a winner at a retail price of around R3750, making it one of their pricier and more desirable models. Luminox SA: 011 486 0215.

Thinking of getting a GPS in your new car? If you have a Blackberry or iPhone, you can get Garmin or TomTom maps. If you have a Nokia, however, you are in luck. Your touchscreen Symbian smart phone probably has Nokia Maps installed on it. Upgrade to the later version (free!) and you get live traffic re-routing. Based on a crowd-sourcing model, the more people using it the more accurate it gets. It also uses commercial, government and digital traffic sensors. Nokia claims to have 100% coverage of SA roads. It also includes walk navigation in Cape Town. Roads automatically colour code as red amber or green depending on traffic flow, and there is of course voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation. ON THE ROADKICKING BACK IN STYLEWhile keeping to things oriental, a pun on the word accord is hard to avoid. What a world we are now in, where Japanese goods are now the most trusted and durable and thanks to tectonic movement, tsunamis’s and fallout, their goods are now in short supply. This is a great pity as they keep upping the ante. Take the excellent new Honda accord. Tested in 2.4 i-VTEC form, the 148 kW 234 Nm engine, has the car good for 0-100 in 8.1 seconds (claimed) and 8,8 litres per 100km with the six-speed manual box. Curiously the five-speed auto gets 8,6 l per 100 but less surprisingly, the slush box makes the ton in a leisurely 9,8 seconds and is clearly longer gearing.

This is not the real story of this car. It isn’t the clearly Eastern styling, which has come unto its own, as far removed from the euro styling as it can be. No, it is the electronic bits. Oddly lacking behind the teutonic lot in the race to driver-assisted superiority in the gadget department, this one starts to play catch up, in a non super-premium segment car.

There are three main highlights in ADAS. CMBS, LKAS and of course ACC. Lost you yet? Honda calls it Advanced Driver Assist System. Collision Mitigation Braking System, this is the one you need when illegally texting in traffic. Lapse in attention, and the car in front is seen looming large by the radar sensors; it warns you with lights and buzzers, to hits the brakes. Cool huh? Lane Keeping Assist System is for when you are eating your sandwich on the freeway. Between 70 and 180km/h if you don’t actively hug the wheel to change lanes, a camera detects which lane you are in and loads torque on the steering to keep you centred. It will issue the usual warnings if you continue to drift.

The last is my favourite. Adaptive Cruise Control. Set your planned speed. If a slower car gets in front of you, it will reduce your speed - so you maintain a safe following distance - and will speed up again when the lane frees up. All this in a well-packaged family car that should set you back in auto form around R400k.
