This has been a wonderful release for me during the pandemic. When I am in the middle of the woods, I can breathe a little easier and certainly with less worry of the virus. The combination of the rain and heat has set the forest ablaze in new green growth. Along with the growth has come increased activity in the wildlife. Right now I am finding it particularly enjoyable counting the number of frogs (about the size of a pinkie nail) that are suddenly everywhere on the trails. The growing number of snakes is less agreeable. Recently I made an interesting discovery about the Croatan forest. Most of you probably already know this, but the Croatan is the only true coastal forest in the East. And per one source it is the remnant of a longleaf pine forest that once made up 90% of a forest that covered the whole Southeast. Who knew we lived in the midst of something so special. The Croatan is also home to a few endangered species of animals which led me to my discovery. Over the last few months as I have been walking the trails, I noticed random pine trees with a white line painted around them. The base of each painted tree was clear of any underbrush. I wondered if this was some weird natural phenomena or an experiment of some sort. Finally my curiosity got the best of me, and I emailed someone I knew at Coastal Federation. It turns out that each painted pine tree houses an active nest for the Red Cockaded woodpecker. Don’t confuse this woodpecker with its larger and more showy cousin the Pileated woodpecker. The red cockaded woodpecker is smaller and has less flash, but it is a very rare bird that calls our backyard home. Once a nest is identified, the Coastal Federation folks paint the tree and then mow around it so when the Forestry services performs necessary burns, the nest and trees survive. How cool is that?! Next time you are driving down Hwy 24 look for the painted white lines on random trees in the forest, and you will know exactly what is going on. Feel free to share this bit of trivia with others and amaze your friends with your knowledge of local fauna. The reason I bring all this up is because it occurred to me that I have been driving by the forest and the red cockaded woodpeckers for years and had no idea that something both rare and special was right there in front of me. All I needed to do was slow down and look. It makes you wonder how many other things we miss in this amazing journey called life all because we don’t take the time to look up and around. The pandemic has brought heartache and hardship in more ways than I care to account for. However, if there is good to be found in the midst of it, then part of that good is that we have been forced to slow down and be more present in our lives than before. I know this may not be true for all of us, but it is for many of us. The day is coming when our lives will get back to normal. I have no doubt it will be a new normal, but it will be a normal. I pray that rather than getting back into old routines (or ruts), we will hold on to the things that we discovered and maybe even rediscovered during the quarantine. Until then … May you find the rare and beautiful in your life. May you see God in the unexpected. And may you always have time for what matters. Love and peace to us all, Ben

I spend a lot of time walking in the Croatan forest. This has been a wonderful release for me

during the pandemic.

JULY 2020

www.capecarteretpresbyterianchurch.org

I spend a lot of time walking in the Croatan forest. This has been a wonderful release for me

during the pandemic.

JULY 2020

www.capecarteretpresbyterianchurch.org

I spend a lot of time walking in the Croatan forest. This has been a wonderful release for me

during the pandemic.

JULY 2020

www.capecarteretpresbyterianchurch.org

I spend a lot of time walking in the Croatan forest. This has been a wonderful release for me

during the pandemic.

(Layouts will be different on different devices. I'll try to walk you through

different devices the best I can)

If the above link does not work, go to: https://www.youtube.com/

In the search bar, type: Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church

On a computer: You will see "Uploads". Those are our videos.

On an iPhone: (sorry, I don't have access to an android)

You will likely have an ad or two at the top, then you will see Cape Carteret

Presbyterian Church with a circle with a picture of our church in it. That is our

channel! Click on that! You will then see videos under "Uploads".

The YouTube video will also be on our Facebook page for viewing.

There is a red subscribe button. If you

want to subscribe to our YouTube Channel I believe it lets you know when we

livestream (we are currently recording the service, not yet livestreaming. We hope to

livestream once we reopen the campus). You do not have to subscribe in

order to watch our worship service...it is optional!.

We have made adjustments, and you are now able to make contributions to BackPack Friends online if you wish! Simply go to our website, click on the “GIVING” tab, and then click the

“GIVE NOW” button.
