FOREWORD

Dear Friends,

We begin with a sincere thanks to you—our mem-bers, friends, volunteers and visitors. The accomplish-ments reported in this 2015 Annual Report would not have been possible without your enthusiastic involve-ment and support. 2015 was the Museum’s first full year of operation following the ten-month renovation and we are pleased to report that we succeeded in every aspect of our mission this year.

Visitorship was up. In spite of the snow-laden early months of the year, we shared the Cape Ann story with more than 25,500 visitors—almost 6,000 more visitors than ever before. They arrived from 46 states and more than 20 countries.

Membership grew. CAM has very loyal members—thank you! Membership support makes up a quarter of the Museum’s annual income and we make every effort to create thoughtful and inspiring experiences that keep you coming back. At year-end, member-ship totaled 1,660 (450 more members than last year). Three hundred were first-time members.

Building and caring for the collection remained critical to our mission. This past year we were privi-leged to receive more than 230 gifts to the Museum's collection and 175 gifts to the Library/Archives. We are grateful to the many artists and collectors who do-

nated work and to the individuals and foundations that have assisted us with purchases, including the tortoise sculpture by Paul Manship (see page 8 for details).

Over the past few years affinity groups have grown around specific areas in the collection. We thank these volunteers who take a special interest in seeing that the collections grow, are cared for and are shared with the public. The Fresnel Lens Committee funded and oversaw a final conserva-tion project for the lens and the newly established Maritime/Fisheries Advisory group has brought a renewed interest and energy to retelling the fisher-ies story and re-envisioning the Maritime/Fisheries Galleries.

Exhibitions resonated with our local communities and with a broader audience. Exhibitions presented during the year reflected CAM’s central role as the interpreter of Cape Ann’s art, history and culture. The year began and ended with distinct artistic interpreta-tions of Cape Ann’s maritime economy—from Jim Hooper’s Portraits of a Working Waterfront to Vincent, Weaver, Gorvett: Gloucester, Three Visions. In between, Jeffrey Marshall's Knots showed the work of an artist mid-career, while Roger Martin: Bill of Lading examined the entire oeuvre of an artist’s long career, as painter, printer and poet. Finally, John Sloan Gloucester Days was a CAM “blockbuster.” The more than 30 paintings on view, representing the entire range of Sloan’s Cape Ann output, attracted visitors from across the country. The show enabled us to build relationships with the more than 20 museums that lent work and raised CAM’s profile as a peer to these institutions.

Our commitment to scholarship continued. As is true every year, the Library/Archives served as a valuable resource to researchers. In 2015, research-ers used CAM’s resources in the publication of four books, one documentary film, a number of disserta-tions and an ongoing blog. Our reach outward to the world expanded as we prepared to launch Fitz Henry Lane Online early in 2016. Support received from the prestigious Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is yet another indication of the national inter-est in this innovative project.

We focused on communications—with our local communities, and beyond. CAM’s recent renovation and successful capital campaign were of great interest to the regional museum community. CAM’s board president and director were interviewed for an article in the New England Museum Association’s (NEMA) monthly magazine, and the VP of the board and director were invited to present at the annual NEMA conference in Portland, ME. The renovation project was also recognized with an award from Preservation Massachusetts.

The John Sloan exhibition attracted substantial me-dia coverage. CAM’s curator appeared on NECN and on WGBH TV and radio, among others.

Our engaging crew of docents led 412 tours, shar-ing the Cape Ann story with 3,300 people. The suc-cess of the docent program prompted the training of approximately 30 new volunteers in early 2016.

We hope you’ve enjoyed the new design, for-mat and content of CAM’s newsletter, Perspectives. Each issue was enhanced by the addition of a feature article written by a contributing author. Our social media reach continues to engage new audiences with concise, clever and well-designed Instagram postings which have received considerable notice from art bloggers and the president of Digital Commonwealth, a non-profit organization that digitizes and dissemi-nates cultural materials.

We strengthened our ongoing commitment to ac-cessibility, in its broadest terms. Throughout the year, the Museum worked hard to reach new audiences. As we do every year, CAM offered free admission to Cape Ann residents during the month of January. Almost 2,000 appreciative people visited during the month. For the first time, we were invited to apply to the Highland Street Foundation for a grant to support free admission on one day during the summer. More than 600 visitors toured our galleries on a very busy July 17 as a result.

Thanks to a donation from a patron, we’ve in-creased the number of assisted listening devices available for our programs. We upgraded lighting and signage for the handicap lift in the Folly Cove Design-er Gallery and are about to begin constructing a ramp for the auditorium stage, made possible with support

from Gloucester’s Community Preservation Fund and a grant from the Bruce J. Anderson Foundation.

We introduced new initiatives to ensure financial sustainability. The Annual Fund is critical to the Mu-seum’s ongoing operations. This past year we honored long-time annual fund champion Dotty Brown by naming the Fund in her honor. Also this year, we final-ized a planned giving program and launched the Cata-lina Davis Legacy Society to recognize individuals and families who have made planned gifts to the Museum.

We continue to look to our younger members to become the next stewards of the Museum and its col-lections. With assistance from some under-50 support-ers, we launched the Red Cottage Society, a young patrons group, which has flourished this past year.

The development department and administra-tive staff worked closely with area businesses to create sponsorship opportunities that benefit each. Last year, Cape Ann Savings Bank and Carpenter & MacNeille, Architect Builders, took the lead in sponsoring the Sloan exhibition. We hope to develop similar partner-ships in 2016.

Finally, the success of our two annual fundraising events, the Captain's Party and the Women's Lun-cheon, made up an essential part of our operating budget. We are truly grateful to all of you for your sponsorship and participation.

We look to the future: Working with consultants from Technical Development Corporation, we are ex-cited to begin the process of updating our 2010–2016 Strategic Plan. We’ve identified four areas to examine in detail. (1) Collections: How would we like to see the collection evolve over the next five, ten, twenty-five years? (2) Facilities: What are our existing and projected facilities needs and how should they be addressed? (3) Staff and Governance: What are the staffing and operational needs to fulfill our goals? (4) Financial: How do we ensure the Museum’s financial stability over the long-term?

Our future planning will not be complete without your input. To that end, we’ll be sending an online survey to our members and friends over the next few months. Your thoughts and ideas will provide valuable guidance. Please participate!

Once again, for all of these accomplishments, we are tremendously grateful to you who so generously support us throughout the year. We also extend our sincere thanks to members of the Museum’s Board and staff for lending their collective talents to meet-ing our mission and keeping it relevant.

Sincerely,

John Cunningham Ronda FaloonPresident Director

Included in the collection is Bernstein’s 1931 self-portrait, a stunning depiction of a young artist just embarking on a long and remarkable career. Cape Ann has long served as an inspiration for visit-ing artists and over the years, in collaboration with benefactors and other arts institutions, the Museum has been involved in creating opportunities for artists to enjoy time for reflection, exploration and experi-mentation in new surroundings.

Gloucester Landscape PrizeFor the past 22 years, a student from the Yale Gradu-ate School of Art has been selected to spend two weeks working on his/her craft on Cape Ann. The idea for the Gloucester Landscape Prize originated with the late Bernard Chaet, artist and former head of Yale's painting department and a long-time summer resident of Rockport. His aim was to provide students with a focused time and space for artistic growth and development. Chaet's vision inspired Gloucester busi-nessman and fellow artist Milt Lauenstein to fund the residency. In 2013 Milt and his wife, Helen, donated their collection of 25 paintings created by the Land-scape Prize recipients to the Museum. This year, they made provisions in their will to support the residency for years to come.

Goetemann Artist in Residency ProgramThis is the seventh year that the Museum has collabo-rated with the Rocky Neck Art Colony’s Goetemann Artist in Residency Program to host the annual lecture offered by their Distinguished Artist/Teacher. The 2015 recipient, painter Katherine Kehoe, presented a powerful presentation, illustrating both her skill as an artist and as a teacher.

The Charles Family Cape Ann ResidencyNow in its third year, The Charles Family Cape Ann Residency, supported by Gloucester residents Ted and Jan Charles, brings a member of Boston’s Copley Society of Art to Cape Ann for a month long stay. CAM staff help orient the artist to the area and its rich history, and host a talk by each year’s recipient.

The Umberto Romano and Clorinda Romano FoundationThe Museum is exploring opportunities for emerging and practicing artists with the newly established Um-berto Romano and Clorinda Romano Foundation. In 2016, more artists than ever will be represented in our one-day installations at the White-Ellery House and the Conversations with Contemporary Artist lecture will become an annual offering.

EXHIBITIONSExhibitions are designed to showcase the collection, to celebrate Cape Ann creativity past and present, and to inform and engage our visitors.

2015 marked the seventh year that the Museum’s White–Ellery House (1710) served as backdrop for a series of contemporary art installations and historical presentations. Scheduled to correspond with Escapes North’s 17th Century Saturdays pro-gram, the installations attracted large audiences and resulted in spirited exchanges between visitors and artists.

Robert Lerch: Peggy’s House, a Cape Ann Cottage June 6, 2015A collection of interior photographs shot in one particu-lar “Cape Ann Cottage” in Annisquam, built in 1761. Lerch’s photographs, shot with natural light, highlighted the differences between a house and a home with the images of the still-lived-in cottage juxtaposed against the empty walls of the White-Ellery House.

Gabrielle Barzaghi: The Picasso Women Visit the White-Ellery HouseSeptember 5, 2015With this installation of drawings (above) based on the work of Picasso, Barzaghi infused the colonial structure with a cubist heartbeat, effecting a surreal and dream-like dialogue with the Spanish master.

Sarah Wonson: A Life ObservedOctober 3, 2015Through her collection of woodblock prints along with woven strips of printed paper, Wonson explored the contemporary relationship of the home and the world at large, commenting on the link between home and object, as well as the nature of disposability.

Portraits of a Working Waterfront: Photographs by Jim HooperOctober 11, 2014 to May 20, 2015

Organized in Fall 2014 in partnership with the Northeast Seafood Coalition of Gloucester, this exhibi-tion of 71 portrait photographs celebrated the men and women involved in Gloucester’s fishing indus-try today. Support for this exhibition was provided by Jim and Jan Bordinaro in honor of James “Red” Bordinaro, John and Janis Bell, Cleveland Cook and Bruce Tobey. Photographer Jim Hooper donated the photographs to the Museum and they are now part of the permanent collection.

Knots: Drawings and Paintings by Jeffrey Marshall January 15, 2015 to March 29, 2015

Jeff Marshall’s paintings, drawings and board books, inspired by the detritus washed up on our coastline by the ocean, were spotlighted in this special exhibition.

Bill of Lading: The Art & Poetry of Roger MartinFebruary 14, 2015 to June 28, 2015

Bill of Lading explored the art and poetry of Roger Martin. A founder of Montserrat College of Art and long-time member of its faculty, the town of Rockport’s first poet laureate and author of three books celebrating the people and poetry of that town, Martin was one of Cape Ann’s most distinguished and creative artists.

John Sloan Gloucester Days July 11, 2015 to November 29, 2015

John Sloan has long been recognized as a major figure in the history of American art and the five sum-mers he spent in Gloucester—1914 to 1918—were the most productive years of the artist’s entire career. He completed almost 300 canvases, nearly one-fourth of the total number of paintings he would create during his lifetime. John Sloan Gloucester Days gave viewers the chance to broaden their appreciation of Sloan’s talents and his passion for art. The exhibition and the exhibition catalog received generous sup-port from Margaret L. Pearson in honor of her mother Peggy Lynch and from Mary Craven in memory of her husband Stephen. The Cape Ann Savings Bank and Carpenter & MacNeille, Architects and Builders sponsored the exhibition and associated lecture series.

Vincent, Weaver, Gorvett: Gloucester, Three VisionsOpened October 24, 2015

This exhibition and the programs which complemented it explored the output of three of the region’s most talented contemporary artists: Peter Vincent, Jeff Weaver and Don Gorvett. All former students of the School of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, during the early 1970s, their lives converged on Cape Ann. A passion for art and youthful enthusiasm were the common threads that bound them together and for each artist, Gloucester’s hardscrabble working waterfront with its long and colorful history was the attraction.

A. PIATT ANDREW BRIDGE DOORS

For much of the year, the Museum was fortunate to have on display two of the four bronze doors from the granite-faced pylons on the top of the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge that carries Route 128 over the Annisquam River and into Gloucester. The doors had been removed from the bridge by the Massachu-setts Department of Trans-portation and, before ar-riving at the Museum, had undergone conservation work at the Skylight Studios in Woburn. Route 128, of-ficially known as the Yankee Division Highway, was built between 1936 and 1958; the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge has long been recognized as the crowning achievement of the construction project. The doors were designed by Boston sculptor John F. Paramino (1889-1956) and com-memorate the Gloucester fishing industry and A. Piatt Andrew, founder of the American Field Service, a U.S. Congressman and a long-time Gloucester resident.

THE NUMBERS• Last year, 12,050 people participated in the 287 classes

and programs offered to adults and children.• Of these, almost 6,000 participated in 84 adult educa-

tional and outreach programs offered by the Museum. • An additional 3,300 visitors were introduced to the

Museum and its collections through 412 docent-led tours.

• 6,160 children and families participated in more than 203 programs designed specifically for them.

• Students from 15 local schools displayed outstanding student artwork throughout the year in the Museum.

PROGRAMS AND EDUCATIONThe Museum’s annual program calendar is designed to complement its collections and special exhibitions with the goal of providing quality Cape Ann centered programming that is engaging, thought provoking and relevant to the lives of today’s diverse audiences. During 2015 members and friends of every age were treated to a robust schedule of gallery talks, poetry readings, lectures, walking tours and boat tours, film screenings, art classes, musical performances, and more.

portraits, and artists Don Gorvett, Jeff Weaver and Peter Vincent’s nephew, Eoin Vincent, did the same in conjunction with the exhibition Gloucester,Three Visions. Roger Martin: Bill of Lading celebrated visual arts and the spoken word. Because of Martin’s history with Montserrat College of Art, we collaborated with Montserrat College of Art a number of times during the exhibition period. Among other programs, John Sloan Gloucester Days inspired a popular three-part lecture series featuring well-known Sloan scholars.

Our programs also focus on discrete audiences. While we work with educators throughout the year, in early fall we hosted a special Edu-cators’ Open House to introduce teachers and faculty from area schools to the Fitz Henry Lane Online project. Our work with senior centers, area nursing homes and adult day care programs grows each year through the CAM Connections program.

We continued our ongoing collaborative program-ming efforts, partnering with other educational and cultural organizations. 2015 offerings included three Fitz Henry Lane sails on the Schooner Ardelle, with docents on board to identify the various locations where Lane painted; the Annual Charles Olson Lec-ture in partnership with the Charles Olson Society and the Gloucester Writers Center; a full day of Dogtown explorations with the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library and Friends of Dogtown; with seARTS, a Wearable Arts panel held in conjunction with their very successful fashion show; and we hosted the Aeolus Quartet in the Museum’s auditorium in collaboration with Rockport Music.

YOUTH AND FAMILY PROGRAMSHighlights of programs designed specifically for children and families, included:

• Serving as hosts for the Gloucester Counts Down to Kindergarten program, which brings 300 children and families into the Museum every fall to explore our re-sources and co-hosting the first Rockport Counts Down to Kindergarten which did the same for an additional 110 children and families.

• Young at Art for Head Start —an ongoing partnership with Cape Ann’s Pathways for Children to provide more than 30 Museum visits for its students through-out the school year, partially sponsored by the Tower Foundation.

• The continuation of the program Artistic Bridges, of-fered in collaboration with the Gloucester Education Foundation and the Gloucester Public Schools, de-signed to bring artists into core curriculum classrooms.

Last year the Museum welcomed students from local, na-tional and international schools, preschool-aged through college, and participated in the following community-wide events: The Gloucester Public Schools Arts Festival, the Cape Ann Family Fun Fair, the Cape Ann Farmers’ Market, the Schooner Festival and the Middle Street Walk.

“Wonderful job showing the Veteran’s School children the Museum! Well worth the walk!”

HIGHLIGHTS Special exhibitions provide unique opportunities for programming. We commissioned composer Robert Bradshaw to create a musical performance piece, Sounds of the Working Waterfront in conjunction with the Portraits of a Working Waterfront exhibition. Photographer Jim Hooper oversaw a lively gallery discussion on these

ART AND MUSICOver the past 12 years the Museum has worked to strengthen its connections with its communities. Every year we collaborate with more than 30 cultural, educational and civic institutions. In 2015, we followed through on plans to offer a joint program with Rock-port Music. Presented in June 2015 at the Shalin Liu Performance Center, Art and Music paired Debussy’s La Mer with images from the Museum's Fitz Henry Lane collection. Curator Martha Oaks delivered the pre-concert talk.

CATALINA DAVIS SOCIETY

Artist Juni van Dyke and the Rose Baker Senior Center donated 14 quilts from the Neighborhood Quilt Project to the Museum’s permanent collection.

Members and friends of the Cape Ann Museum value it for many reasons, but all share a common purpose; to sustain it for the long-term. Creating a legacy through planned giving is a way to make this tangible.

Catalina Davis (1854–1932) was one of the Cape Ann Museum’s early and most ardent supporters. During the 1930s, funds bequeathed to the Museum from her estate allowed for the construction of a modern, fireproof building containing a large exhibi-tion gallery (now the Cape Ann Gallery) and an auditorium. Her generosity also resulted in the addition to the permanent collec-tion of two oil paintings by Fitz Henry Lane, numerous pieces of early New England furniture and an array of other historically important objects, books and artwork.

Most importantly, Catalina Davis’ foresight resulted in the creation of the Museum’s first endowment, which to this day contin-ues to benefit the Museum.

Established in 2015, the Catalina Davis Legacy Society recognizes individuals who contribute to the future of the Cape Ann Museum through bequests, trusts and other planned and life income gifts. Membership is extended to all who have made an estate provision for the Museum, regard-less of the amount. Information on the Society is available through the Development Department.

Alfred Mansfield Brooks (1870–1963), long time president and curator of the Cape Ann Museum, was responsible for assembling what would ultimately

become the largest and finest collection of works by marine artist Fitz Henry

Lane (1804 –1865). The AMB Society was established in

2009 to honor the generosity of Robert L. and Elizabeth French and to serve as an acknowledgement of grati-tude to the long line of do-nors who have shaped the Museum’s collection. The

Society recognizes those who have made donations of

art or artifacts to the Museum, who have pledged a future gift, or

who have provided funds for the purchase or conservation of such at a minimum of $10,000 on or after September 2009.

Howard and Joan Resnikoff admire works on view in the Atrium.

“What a lovely little museum this is—not only is there a great local art collection, but there are also fas-cinating artifacts of the Cape’s maritime history. We loved it. Especially interesting was the docent tour—a knowledgeable lady with great presence.”
