UNU/INRA - MINERAL RESOURCES UNIT
• International Community of Scholars
•Engaged - Research, Postgraduate training and knowledge dissemination to promote UN’s aims of peace and progress (address issues that are of concern to the UN). •UNU commenced work in Tokyo in September, 1975.
•Voluntarily Funded UN Organisation.
•UNU conducts activities through multidisciplinary network of its own 15 Research and Training Centres and Programmes (RTC/Ps) located in 13 countries and individual scientists and institutions world over. System Coordinated by UNU Center, Tokyo.
UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY (www.unu.edu)
•One of Research and Training Centers (RTC) of UNU
• Established in 1986, HQ located at Legon, UG, Accra
• Mission - Build endogenous African capacity and strengthen national institutions to promote sustainable use of continent’s natural resources for development
•Research, training and dissemination activities targeted at –Ensuring that African scientists, technologists and institutions acquire capabilities to generate, adapt and apply knowledge and technology – capabilities to help eradicate poverty, improve food security and promote more effective and efficient utilization of natural resources
UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE FOR NATURAL RESOURCES IN AFRICA (www.inra.unu.edu)
•Lagos Plan of Action 1980 - African governments concerned about formidable obstacles that undermined the ability of the African countries to benefit fully from their vast natural resource endowment.
• OAU (now AU) requested UNU to establish INRA
• OAU Noted - Africa’s wealth can be derived from efficient management and transformation of its natural resources.
•Mandate- set direction, pace and content of research, training and capacity building for natural resources management in Africa. •Carries out its work through its 5 Operating Units(OUs)
INSTITUTE FOR NATURAL RESOURCES IN AFRICA(UNU-INRA)
Three program priority areas of UNU-INRA
One of the Operating Units of UNU-INRA based at the University of Zambia, Lusaka.
UNU-INRA Mineral Resources Unit(MRU)
• Lagos plan noted - formidable obstacles that undermined the ability of the African countries to benefit fully from their vast mineral resource endowment.
• Identified - need to formulate different mineral resources policy options, especially in the fields of mineral exploration, mining development, mineral processing , mining environment and value addition
• Set up at Lusaka through MOU between UNU and
GRZ
• Started operating in April 1991
UNU-INRA Mineral Resources Unit(MRU)
MRU is OU Focused on program area(PA) 3 of UNU-INRA
• OU in Cameroon(Yaounde I) – Computer Applications
• OU in Namibia – Aquatic and Marine Resources
• OU in Senegal – Social and Economic Issues
UNU-INRA Mineral Resources Unit(MRU)
Through the Institute’s strategy; the MRU would work in the priority areas of mineral resource endowment, technology and management, and mineral policy options through:
• Undertaking research and development work • Provide advanced training for scientists, technologists, managers
and engineers • Participate in scientific and technological information activities • Host conferences, seminars, workshops and panels • Provide consultancy services • Facilitate the work of networking with other stake holders such as
members of the CRA, industry, international organizations and all other partners in mineral resources for development.

Agronomic effectiveness of locally produced Partially Acidulated Phosphate Rock(PAPR) project.2001 – 2003
A collaborative research project between the School of Mines and School of Agricultural Sciences conducted to study the effectiveness of PAPR on various field crops on various soil types in Zambia.
UNU-INRA Mineral Resources Unit
Some Activities carried out
Field study of PAPR effectiveness on various crops
• PhD Studies on the Optimization of Production Parameters of Partially Acidulated Phosphate Rock (PAPR).2001 - 2003
• The only PhD study carried out at MRU since inception streamlined all parameters required for efficient and cost effective production of PAPR for easy affordability by resource-poor rural farmers.
PhD Student Optimizing PAPR production at School of Mines Pilot Plant.
